The characters are intentionally inconsistent. For example in “My Collection,” Elaine is speaking directly to someone. Maybe a close friend? Maybe her own conscience? The tone of her voice and her opinions are very different than in “A Distinguished Man,” where she is shown as a responsible and loving mother. These jumps in voice and point of view, illustrate how we all teetering between hypocrisy and compassion.     Blues Lyric Formulas in Early Country Music, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock and Roll * Nicholas Stoia NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: hps://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.20.26.4/mto.20.26.4.stoia.php KEYWORDS: blues, country music, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, lyric formulas ABSTRACT: This article briefly recounts recent work identifying the most common lyric formulas in early blues and then demonstrates the prevalence of these formulas in early country music, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll. The study shows how the preference for certain formulas in prewar country music—like the preference for the same formulas in prewar blues—reflects the social instability of the time, and how the de-emphasis of these same formulas in rhythm and blues and rock and roll reflects the relative affluence of the early postwar period. This shift in textual content is the lyrical counterpart to the electrification, urbanization, and growing formal complexity that mark the transformation of prewar blues and country music into postwar rhythm and blues and rock and roll. Lyric formulas are fragments of lyrical content—usually lines or half lines— that are shared among singers and recognized by both musicians and listeners. Blues is the genre for which scholars have most conclusively established the widespread use of lyric formulas, and this study briefly recounts recent work that identifies the most common lyric formulas in commercially recorded blues from the early 1920s to the early 1940s—research showing that the high frequency of certain formulas reflects the societal circumstances of much of the African American population during that period.

The script is a blend of the true art-history as well as fictional lives of the women and deals with the duality of the word “painted”. Through direct audience address and first person recounts from the women themselves, the piece attempts to ask the question of whether or not being a muse is as grand of a thing as it is made out to be. The works being used include: Mona Lisa, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, A Portrait of Dora Maar, American Gothic, Gala Against the Light, Self Portrait of Frida Kahlo and Marilyn Monroe. 2 Introduction The objective of this thesis was to devise an original piece of theatre. The thesis contains three components: the written script, the rehearsal and preparation of the technical aspects of the performance and the actual performance of the work. It was important for me as an artist to do this thesis because my college career has been spent completing a degree that is separate from my art. The thesis allows for me to use my creativity in a way that my degree has not allowed me to. When I began this journey I knew that I wanted to create a one-woman show.

Formed The Heartbreakers in Los Angeles, California: Mike Campbell (guitar; born on 2/1/1950), Benmont Tench (keyboards; born on 9/7/1953), Ron Blair (bass; born on 9/16/1948) and Stan Lynch (drums; born on 5/21/1955). Howie Epstein (born on 7/21/1955; died of a drug overdose on 2/23/2003, age 47) replaced Blair in 1982; Blair returned in 2002, replacing Epstein. Steve Ferrone replaced Lynch in 1995. Scott Thurston (of The Motels) joined as tour guitarist in 1991 and eventually became a permanent member of the band. Petty appeared in the movies FM, Made In Heaven and The Postman and also voiced the character of Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt on the animated TV series King Of The Hill. Member of the Traveling Wilburys. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were the subject of the 2007 documentary film Runnin’ Down A Dream, directed by Peter Bogdanovich.
