Publicado por: Abdul Nasser Thabet Hasta hace muy poco el hecho de que un ajedrecista, por muy talentoso que fuese, pensara siquiera en alcanzar las 2800 unidades Elo era motivo suficiente para buscarle asilo en el más renombrado de los manicomios —a fin de cuentas, genios como Kafka, Van Gogh y Virginia Woolf también rozaron la locura—. Pero ya Magnus Carlsen escapó de esa camisa de fuerza, la deshizo y con los retazos construyó un camino más grande —puede que solo para él—, un camino que lleva a lo inimaginable: 2900 puntos, una nueva era de la mano del hombre que pudiera convertirse en la mayor creación que ha parido Caissa. El Memorial Gashimov, con sede en Azerbaiyán, viene siendo parte de ese puente hacia la inmortalidad, un torneo que promedia 2780 con el nene noruego en rol de comandante tras las dos primeras rondas. El actual campeón mundial ostenta 2881 rayas en el ranking de la FIDE, y el mes de mayo bien pudiera recibirlo aún más henchido. «Estos son otros tiempos, resulta menos complicado ganar Elo, solo basta comparar las épocas y ver la cantidad de exponentes que hoy respiran por encima de 2700», dicen muchos, y es cierto. Mas, la matemática no falla y para aspirar al coeficiente del prodigio nórdico hay que cumplir una fórmula «sencilla»: ganar y solo ganar, pues un mero empate conduce a cuantiosas pérdidas —de las derrotas ni hablo—. Entrando en la justa que nos compete, les cuento que asisten seis sesudos archiconocidos entre trebejos. Además del ya mencionado rey universal, se rompen las neuronas el bambino Fabiano Caruana (2783), el estadounidense Hikaru Nakamura (2772), el ruso Sergey Karjakin (2772), y los azeríes Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2760) y Teimour Radjabov (2713). Tiempo después, el monarca del orbe respondió en una entrevista: «La verdad es que nunca he visto la película. En caso contrario, y si Nakamura fuese mejor jugador de ajedrez, quizá me podría haber sentido ofendido». Creo que este triunfo de Magnus silenciará por buen rato al descendiente nipón. Lo que queda a su paso en el Memorial Gashimov es un amasijo de huesos temblorosos y rezos para la supervivencia. This festival-like championship consisted of five competitions, and attracted numerous young chess players all over Europe. Two hundred players from 23 national federations took part in the competition, in 12 different categories, Girls and Boys separately. 1 NL AUGUST 2015 EUROPEAN CHESS UNION After the introductory speech from the Chief Arbiter Petar Katanic Vujic, participants were greeted by the president of the Serbia Chess Federation Miroslav Kopanja, who eventually officially opened the competition. The Championship started with Rapid Individual competition, which was held 1-2 August. 16 best players from all 12 categories: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18, Boys and Girls separately, played the Superfinal, and competed for the absolute best young rapid chess player in Europe. The Superfinal was played in the knock-out format, and after 8 rounds, WIM Laura Unuk (SLO 2019) and IM Benjamin Gledura (HUN 2416) became the winners of European Youth Rapid Superfinals. Superfinal Results The event continued with the European Youth Team Championship in Rapid chess, which took part 3-4 August. The Championship was held in three categories: U10, U14 and U18, and the teams were composed of 4 players: 3 boys + 1 girl. The tournament was played according to the Swiss System with time control was 10 minutes + 5 seconds per player.

Many regional, continental and worldwide tournaments have been organized since the year 1985: The World Junior Chess Championship in Sharjah, UAE won by Max Dlugy in 1985, then the 1986 Chess Olympiad in Dubai won by USSR, the Asian Team Chess Championship won by the Philippines. Dubai hosted also the Asian Cities Championships in 1990, 1992 and 1996, the FIDE Grand Prix (Rapid, knock out) in 2002, the Arab Individual Championship in 1984, 1992 and 2004, and the World Blitz & Rapid Chess Championship 2014. Dubai Chess & Culture Club is established in 1979, as a member of the UAE Chess Federation and was proclaimed on 3/7/1981 by the Higher Council for Sports & Youth. It was first located in its previous premises in Deira–Dubai as a temporarily location for the new building to be over. Since its launching, the Dubai Chess & Culture Club has played a leading role in the chess activity in UAE, achieving for the country many successes on the international, continental and Arab levels. The Club has also played an imminent role through its administrative members who contributed in promoting chess and leading the chess activity along with their chess colleagues throughout UAE. “Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup” The Dubai Open championship, the SHEIKH RASHID BIN HAMDAN BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM CUP, the strongest tournament in Arabic countries for many years, has been organized annually as an Open Festival since 1999, it attracts every year over 200 participants. Among the winners are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (in the edition when Magnus Carlsen made his third and final GM norm at the Dubai Open of 2004), Wang Hao, Wesley So, or Gawain Jones.

Russian GM Evgeny Najer won the European Individual Chess Championship 2015, which was held in Jerusalem/Israel from 23 February to 8 March, 2015. The new champion scored 8.5 points ahead of Navara, Bartel and Khismatullin 8 each. 22 players scored 7.5 points each securing a place in the world cup games next October in the Azeri capital of Baku. 1 NL MARCH 2015 EUROPEAN CHESS UNION The great upset of the championship was the poor finish of the former continental champion, Russian Ian Nepomnianchtchi; who had led the field to what seemed to be a second title but managed to score just half a point in the last three rounds with painful defeat against Polish Mateusz Bartel in the final round. The complete results and the final standings may be seen here The prize giving was attended by the board of the European Chess Union and started with a projected greeting by the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speeches were made by President of the ECU, GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili (himself a former European champion) and ACP (Association of chess professionals) president GM Emil Sutovsky who both praised the superb organization of the event expressing their hope for more such major tournaments in Israel soon enough.
