Truck, which had been the centrepiece of Oxford’s live music calendar since 1998, surviving both floods and foot and mouth crises, succumbed to financial woes last year, going into administration in September.     The Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 1 74 The Rise of The Hip-hop DJ DJs were Hip-hop’s original architects, and remain crucial to its contin- ued development. Hip-hop is more than a style of music; it’s a culture. As with any culture, there are various artistic expressions of Hip-hop, the four principal expressions being: • visual art (graffiti) • dance (breaking, rocking, locking, and popping, collectively known in the media as “break dancing”) • literature (rap lyrics and slam poetry) • music (DJing and turntablism) Unlike the European Renaissance or the Ming Dynasty, Hip-hop is a culture that is very much alive and still evolving. Some argue that Hip-hop is the most influential cultural movement in history, point- ing to the globalization of Hip-hop music, fashion, and other forms of expression. Style has always been at the forefront of Hip-hop. Improvisation is called free styling, whether in rap, turntablism, breaking, or graf- fiti writing. Since everyone is using the essentially same tools (spray paint for graffiti writers, microphones for rappers and beat boxers, their bodies for dancers, and two turntables with a mixer for DJs), it’s the artists’ personal styles that set them apart. It’s no coincidence that two of the most authentic movies about the genesis of the move- ment are titled Wild Style and Style Wars. To explore this field, we used an online quantitative survey (N= 761) followed up by 60 in-depth interviews, asking questions about musical preferences. Both the survey and the interviews disclose strongly gender-specific patterns of musical preference, the women preferring rock and alternative genres while the men tend to prefer pop and more commercial genres. While the sexual orientation of the musician is not very relevant to most participants, they do identify certain kinds of music that are strongly associated with lesbian and/or gay culture, often based on the play with codes of masculinity and femininity. Our findings confirm the popularity of certain types of music among Flemish lesbians and gay men, for whom it constitutes a shared source of identification, as it does across many Western countries. The qualitative data, in particular, allow us to better understand how such music plays a role in constituting and supporting lesbian and gay cultures and communities.

The author is an old white guy. Pro: This was certainly a unique perspective. I mean, I guess I'm an "old white guy" too, now, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and Eliot Wilder grew up in the 1960s. In fact, he spends the first 22 pages of the book talking about how he grew up listening to the Four Tops, the Kinks, and Buffalo Springfield on AM radio. Con: Since the book is basically a long interview with Shadow, I feel like better questions would have been asked by someone more familiar with hip-hop.

Uit onderzoek voor deze paper kwam naar voren dat de bekendste popgroep aller tijden - The Beatles - ook instrumentale songs hebben geschreven. Mijn interesse was gewekt, te meer omdat ik de Beatles voornamelijk kende van nummers zoals 'Hey Jude', 'Yesterday' en 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Deze fameuze popgroep heeft dus eveneens andersoortige nummers geschreven. In deze thesis wil ik geen 'herziene' versie maken van informatie die al tot in den treuren is uitgeplozen. Dit is echter niet eenvoudig, maar 'instrumentale nummers' is één van de onderwerpen die als onderwerp op zichzelf, nooit onderzocht is. In de hoogtij dagen van The Beatles – de jaren 1960 – zijn er maar op 3 albums instrumentals terug te vinden. De bekendste is waarschijnlijk 'Revolution 9' van de White Album (1968). Verder staat op het album Magical Mystery Tour (1967) het nummer 'Flying'.

Man schüttelt sich die Schwere des wie immer zu langen Winters aus den Gliedern und erwartet die ersten warmen Tage so freudig wie den Besuch von alten Freunden. Normalerweise. Aber jetzt ist Krise. Und deswegen dauert der gefühlte Winter noch eine Weile. Ich will nicht schwarzsehen, aber mindestens bis 2010. Wenn wir Glück haben. Und bis dahin sieht es verdammt mies aus. Banken versinken schneller, als ihre Topmanager beim Sprung aus der Chefetage vom 25sten Stock bis auf den Asphalt brauchen, Finanzmärkte brechen zusammen, die Wirtschaft liegt am Boden. Weltweit. Die Autobranche benötigt Ver- kaufshilfen von der Regierung, die Textilbranche schrumpft und der gesamte Mittel- stand hat Zukunftsangst. Verlage machen pleite, Zeitschriften werden eingestampft, Fernsehsendern wird der Stecker gezogen, die Werbung kämpft um die kargen Mittel ihrer Kunden, man hat den Eindruck, die gesamte Medienwelt liege im Sterben. Man kann es nicht schönreden, es herrscht – mit einem Wort – Endzeitstimmung. Bei curt war es bisher eigentlich eher unüblich, wie in normalen Magazinen an dieser Stelle über den Inhalt zu sprechen. Aber ich will diesmal eine Ausnahme machen. Aus gutem Grund, denn die aktuelle Ausgabe ist keine gewöhnliche. Dieses curt ist ein Abschiedsheft. Ihr werdet in ihm Geschichten und Bilder finden über Kälte, über Tod und über Trauer. Geschichten übers Dichtmachen und vielleicht auch über Hoffnung.
