Julia Metger har for nylig bemærket, at “the journa- lists as acteurs and the process of gathering, interpreting and transferring information have so far received little attention in studies on the cold war.”3 Rósa Magnúsdóttir har påpeget, at “little or no attention has been paid to the role of American journalists in the creation and maintenance of knowledge about the Soviet Union. … • Salomé (1861-1937) and Alina Bronsky (1978-)
ABSTRACT Title of Document: CULTURAL AND SOCIAL BORDER CROSSINGS: GERMANY AND RUSSIA IN THE WRITINGS OF LOU ANDREAS- SALOMÉ (1861-1937) AND ALINA BRONSKY (1978-). Regina Ianozi, Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Directed By: Professor Elke P. Frederiksen, Department of Germanic Studies This study explores sociocultural discourses on Russia and Germany and examines the intercultural and gendered hybrid identity formation among Russian-German women in the texts of Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937) Fenitschka (1898), Russland mit Rainer (1900), and Rodinka (1923) and in Alina Bronsky’s novels (1978-) Scherbenpark (2008) and Die schärfsten Gerichte der tatarischen Küche (2010). The project employs an interdisciplinary approach in the analyses of texts by combining the methodologies of cultural and intercultural studies, German cultural studies, as well as feminist and gender studies. It further incorporates a historical overview of the major political events and economic relationships between Russia and Germany at the end of the nineteenth through the twentieth, and the beginning of the twenty first century. The study analyzes the influence that these events had on societal mainstream perceptions of the ‘Other’ during these periods. The discourse on Soviet/Russian and German cultural encounters as well as the concept of ‘Otherness’ particularly from a Russian-German perspective were investigated. The texts reveal the rich German cultural presence in Russia throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the social position of minorities in Soviet Russia in late twentieth century and in post-reunification Germany. It also looks at the ‘Woman Question’ and gender issues in both nations and the deviation from societal gender norms among Russian-German women.

  • Beyond Totalitarianism: Stalinism and Nazism Compared
Below is Chapter 9 in: Geyer, Michael and Sheila Fitzpatrick (2009). Beyond Totalitarianism: Stalinism and Nazism Compared. New York: Cambridge University Press. States of Exception The Nazi-Soviet War as a System of Violence, 1939–1945 Mark Edele and Michael Geyer Stepforward:Wehearthatyouareagoodman....Listen,weknow you are our enemy. Therefore we now shall put you against a wall. But in consideration of your merits and virtues, it will be a good wall, and we shall shoot you with good bullets from good guns, and we shall bury you with a good shovel in good soil. (Bertolt Brecht, “Verhor¨ des Guten”) And as to you, when the time has come that man will be his brother’s keeper, look back on us with forbearance. (Bertolt Brecht, “An die Nachgeborenen”)1 The trouble is that neither the Wehrmacht nor the Red Army considered merit and virtue and, inasmuch as they buried the dead, they did not bury them in good soil. Neither did those born afterward show forbearance, for they were either too caught up in the dark times they tried to escape after defeat or never saw the darkness in the bright light of victory. The Soviet Union and the German Reich fought a war that denied virtue and honor to enemy soldiers and set entire people against each other in a life-and-death struggle. So hore:¨ Wir wissen / Du bist unser Feind.
