PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS TO THE UNITED NATIONS BZO SECOND AVENUE NEW YORK, N. Y. IOOI7 Ref: 2002/77/2 Excellency, I have the honour to refer to the decision of the President of Cyprus, Mr. Kyprianou, to visit during this month the Greek Cypriot citizens of the Republic in the occupied area of Karpass. This decision, together with a request that the necessary facilities might be provided by the United Nations, was communicated yesterday to your Special Representative, Ambassador Galindo Pohl, who undertook to communicate with the Secretary-General on the subject. Sub- sequently, Ambassador Pohl informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Mr. Denktash places conditions for such visit, to the effect that a letter by the President of the Republic should be addressed to him as President of the so-called "Turkish Federated State of Cyprus", or that a meeting between them be arranged to discuss the matter. The President has the legitimate and fundamental right to visit citizens of the Republic in any part of the territory, particularly when, as in this case, the visit is motivated purely by humanitarian reasons, having regard to the situation of the Greek Cypriot citizens in the Karpass.

  • Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia
Defend Your Coast: Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia Region of Cyprus By Tyler Martin Caldwell March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. David Stewart Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies, Department of History The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is situated at the crossroads of the Near East and the Aegean Civilizations. During the Middle Ages, Cyprus experienced raids that would devastate the coastal landscape. Coastal towns and villages were destroyed, and many of them never rebuilt. Fortifications were constructed to defend the coastline from raiders and potential invaders. Scholars believe that during times of heavy raiding coastal settlements are abandoned in favor of inland settlements. This theory has not been tested using Geographic Information System (GIS). This study used GIS to test the area of influence raiders could exert inland during a raid. Based on past research the extent of influence was determined to be 3000 m inland. The Network Analyst tool was used to determine the shortest routes raiders and defenders took to reach undefended villages and churches. The time needed for defenders and attackers to reach sites was determined using a hiking calculator. Based on the results of the test the majority of sites are situated outside the range of raiders influence. DOCUMENT WITH THE COMMENTS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CYPRIOT ARCHAEOLOGISTS CONCERNING TURKEY’S REPORT ON THE ‘IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ‘INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS’ In 1974 the Turkish armed forces invaded Cyprus in violation of international law, including the UN Charter. Turkey still occupies over 36% of the territory of the Republic with 43,000 troops, and is therefore responsible for the actions of its army and the subordinate local administration. It is also pertinent to recall that in 1983 the then Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Denktaş, declared the establishment of the so-called “TRNC” in the occupied part of Cyprus. This action was condemned by the UN Security Council in Resolutions 541(1983) and 550 (1984) which calls upon the international community neither to recognize such an entity nor to assist or in any way cooperate with it. As far as cultural heritage is concerned Turkey is a Party to the following Conventions: UN Conventions: 1. Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict with Regulations for the Execution of the Convention, The Hague, 14 May 1954 2. First Protocol to the Hague Convention of 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, The Hague, 14 May 1954 1 3. • Settlement Hierarchy and the Location of Alashiya on Cyprus
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI _____________ , 20 _____ I,______________________________________________, hereby submit this as part of the requirements for the degree of: ________________________________________________ in: ________________________________________________ It is entitled: ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ Approved by: ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ Settlement Hierarchy and the Location of Alashiya on Cyprus A thesis submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In the Department of Classics 2003 by Kristopher Mark Armstrong B.A., University of Ottawa, 2000 Committee Chair: Gisela Walberg Abstract This thesis investigates the socio-political character of Late Bronze Age (LBA) Cyprus during the sixteenth to fourteenth centuries BC primarily from an archaeological point of view. Past theories concerning this subject suggest that a centralized political authority ruled Cyprus during this time period. Such suggestions are used to support the hypothesis that Cyprus was Alashiya (a kingdom mentioned in contemporary fourteenth century texts from various kingdoms). While it is the general assumption of scholars that the two were universal equivalents, there is no concrete evidence for such an interpretation. Enkomi, an LBA site, has been used to support the idea that Cyprus entered an early form of statehood beginning in the LBA. The supposedly large extent of the settlement, the wealth of its archaeological remains, and its metallurgical facilities are said to suggest that it was the capital of Alashiya. While this theory seems possible, a number of other LBA cities existed that appear to have been equivalent, or even superior, to Enkomi in these terms.

Nick Kardulias 22 March 2015 i ABSTRACT During the Archaic period (750-480 BC) the island of Cyprus underwent a dramatic transformation as new city-kingdoms rose to dominate the political landscape of the island. This shift resulted in increased competition for resources, establishment of political boundaries, and emergence of a pronounced social hierarchy within the new polities. While many of the large settlements that became centers of power during this time have been thoroughly studied, the manifestation of the large scale changes of the Archaic in the periphery have not been as fully investigated.
