NYSDEC & AMR Pilot Reservation System
Updated 04/15/21 NYSDEC & AMR Pilot Reservation System DEC and the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) launched a no-cost pilot reservation system to address public safety at a heavily traveled stretch on Route 73 in the town of Keene in the Adirondack High Peaks. The Adirondack Mountain Reserve is a privately owned 7,000-acre land parcel located in the town of Keene Valley that allows for limited public access through a conservation easement agreement with DEC. The pilot reservation system does not apply to other areas in the Adirondack Park. The reservation system, operated by AMR, will facilitate safer public access to trailheads through the AMR gate and for Noonmark and Round mountains and improve visitors' trip planning and preparation by ensuring they have guaranteed parking upon arrival. In recent years, pedestrian traffic, illegal parking, and roadside stopping along Route 73 have created a dangerous environment for hikers and motorists alike. These no-cost reservations will be required May 1 through Oct. 31, 2021. Reservations will be required for parking, daily access, and overnight access to these specific trails. Visitors can make reservations beginning April 15 at hikeamr.org. Walk-in users without a reservation will not be permitted. o There is no cost associated with making a reservation. o Those arriving to Keene Valley via Greyhound or Trailways bus lines may present a valid bus ticket from within 24 hours of arrival to the AMR parking lot attendant in lieu of a reservation. o Those being dropped off or arriving by bicycle must check in at the AMR Hiker Parking Lot and produce a valid reservation. -

Chapter 8 Rail
Chapter 8 Rail A component of the SAFETEA-LU legislation is to improve interregional and international transportation and to serve the mobility needs of people and freight. New York State’s Transportation Master Plan’s vision is to create a seamless system in which travelers can conveniently shift between modes and operators to complete trips that meet their individual and business needs. Long-Range planning efforts in Herkimer and Oneida Counties are consistent with this vision in planning transportation systems that will serve the mobility needs of people and freight. Rail transportation is an efficient way to move freight and people while saving energy, reducing air pollution, relieving traffic congestion, and reducing maintenance and repair on the highway network. Rail service in the HOCTS Planning Area consists not only of long-distance, pass-through freight movement. There are also short lines that deliver goods to local industries, passenger service provided by Amtrak at stations in Utica and Rome and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. The use and condition of the Utica and Rome stations, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and the implementation of high-speed rail are high priorities for the region. Recommendations made in this chapter include: the implementation of the Union Station Master Plan, elimination or correction of unsafe grade crossings, restoration of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, and support for high-speed passenger rail service. HOCTS 8 - 1 Chapter 8 Rail Destinations 2010 - 2030 2009 New York State Rail Plan The 2009 New York State Rail Plan presents a 20-year plan (through 2030) for the state's rail system and describes strategies and initiatives aimed at rebuilding the rail transportation system. -

Next Generation Council
Next Generation Council Adeline Clayton, Lake Placid, NY Tahawus Trails LLC Addy first moved to the Adirondacks for a summer internship with the Adirondack Mountain Club in 2015. You could say it was love at first sight because she’s been here since. Working for the ADK for the following 4 summers, Addy made the area her year-round home in 2018. She now works for Tahawus Trails LLC, a small private trail contracting company working on hiking and biking trails across New York state. When not working to improve the trails, she enjoys biking, baking, and working in her garden. She currently is the coordinator for the Lake Placid Community Garden and is on the ADK’s trails committee board as well as a founding member for the mountain club’s trail crew alumni association. Protecting the Adirondacks has become more than just a job for her, it’s something that she feels deeply connected to and has found a great deal of solace and healing among the mountains and wild waters of the park. She hopes to connect others to the place as sustainably as possible. Janelle Hoh, Saranac Lake, NY Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Although not a native-born Adirondacker, Janelle has been actively involved and working here for over a decade. Nature and topics related to the environment have always been her passion, which led her to pursue those topics in academia. Janelle holds a BA in environmental studies and a MS in conservation biology. Most of the work Janelle has done academically and professionally has centered around how people relate and interact with their surroundings, specifically the natural world. -
