VLOOTOPLEIDING JANUARIE Tot SEPTEMBER 1964 VLOOTOPLEIDING JANUARIE tot SEPTEMBER 1964 In my matriekjaar in 1963 het ek aansoek gedoen om in 1964 my militêre diensplig in die Vloot Gimnasium op Saldanha te doen. Ek was ongelukkig om nie daarvoor gekeur te word nie. In daardie jaar was daar ‘n groot toename in die aantal persone wat opgeroep is vir militêre diensplig ná skool, waarvan ek een was, soos ook heelwat van my vriende saam met my op skool in daardie jaar. In die ruimte waar jy kon aandui in watter eenheid jy wou dien, het ek in hoofletters ingevul : VLOOT. Ek is gelukkig laat weet dat ek op 2 Januarie 1964 by die SAS Simonsberg, ‘n nuwe opleidings basis in Simonstad, moes aanmeld. Ek was reeds met ons gesin in Kaapstad en het op die middag van 2 Januarie van my skoolvriende van Pretoria, wat ook oppad Simonstad toe was, op die Kaapstad stasie ontmoet. Ons is per voorstedelike trein vanaf Kaapstad na Simonstad. Die 2e Januarie was destyds ‘n informele vakansiedag in die Kaap en langs die roete verby Muizenberg, Kalkbaai en Vishoek, het vakansiegangers langs die see gekuier. Dit was ons laaste oomblikke van vryheid voor ons in Simonstad aangekom het ! Op die stasie in Simonstad het militêre busse gewag om ons na die opleidings basis in die “Dock Yard” te neem. Ons was van die laastes wat daar arriveer het. Ons kon slegs ‘n klein koffer met persoonlike besittings en onderklere saamneem. Ons is elk van ‘n swart beret, ‘n paar swart leersandale en ‘n blou oorpak voorsien. My oorpak was myle te groot, maar daar was nie meer kleiner nommers nie en ek moes maar sien en kom klaar. Ons moes summier hierdie drie kledingstukke aantrek en ons siviele klere in ons koffers inpak. Simonstad Vloot Basis Ons is daarna na ons woonkwartiere geneem. Die nuwe opleidings basis het bestaan uit ‘n dubbelverdieping gebou met groot slaapsale op die boonste vloer, wat elk ongeveer 32 stapel beddens gehuisves het. Almal in so ‘n slaapsaal (“Dormitory”) was in ‘n sogenaamde klas ingedeel, met ‘n klasleier wat reeds sy 3 maande basiese opleiding ondergaan het. Hy het die rang van Able Seaman 1st Class gehad. Ons rang was Able Seaman 2nd Class. Ons beddens was twee stapel beddens van staal opmekaar, met klapperhaar matrasse. Elke persoon het ook ‘n “locker” gehad vir klerasie en badkamer benodighede. Ons het instruksie gekry hoe om ons beddens op te maak en alles moes “square” wees. Ek het in bed 13A 1 van Dormitory 219 geslaap. Jan Hiemstra het in die bed bo my geslaap en Neels van Heerden en Theuns Prinsloo, almal van Affies, was ook saam met my in dié sogenaamde klas. My weermag nommer wat die Vloot aan my toegeken het was 6331144. Nogal ‘n cool nommer, né ? Een van ons eerste pligte was om al ons siviele klere in ons koffers te pak, duidelik met ons huisadres te merk en in te handig vir versending huis toe. Vir ‘n paar dae sou ons in ons oorpakke en “sandals” leef ! Die eerste paar dae se aktiwiteite het bestaan om ons verder van uitrusting en uniforms te voorsien. ‘n Haarsny, waartydens omtrent al my hare afgeskeer is, was ook op die program. Ons klere uitrusting het bestaan uit ‘n swart en wit formele uniform (“Tunics”), twee wit vloot pette, vyf blou- en drie wit hemde, drie donkerblou lang en kortbroeke,’n donkerblou trui, swart kouse en sokkies, ‘n paar swart skoene en ‘n paar swart stewels, ‘n paar wit tekkies, ‘n swart leer gordel en twee wit kort broeke en twee wit kortmou hemde (sogenaamde “step outs”). Elkeen van ons het ook ‘n stempel van hout wat die “chippy” (skrynwerker) vir ons gemaak het, gekry. Die stempel is in swart verf gedoop en daarmee is al jou klere en toerusting gemerk. Om dit als te vervoer het jy ook so ‘n ligbruin seilsak wat so 1.5 meter hoog was, gekry. Ons vyf blou hemde is met die stempel en swart verf bo die linker sak gemerk. Met naald en swart gare moes ons ons name uitborduur. Tydens al hierdie aktiwiteite moes ons ons blou “overalls”, sandale en swart berets dra. Hierdie aktiwiteite het ‘n paar dae geduur en na ‘n paar dae was dit nie meer te aangenaam in die “overall” nie want dit was somer en ons het maar gesweet ! Wanneer jy van punt A na punt B beweeg het, was dit nie in ‘n looppas nie maar in die dubbel pas (“on the double”), so ‘n stywe draffie. Gelukkig het die chippie net 6 letters gebruik vir my naam, nl P DE WET. ‘n Jood van Johannesburg in ons dormitory was minder gelukkig. Sy naam was D UNTERHALTER ! Twaalf letters vir elke hemp ! Gelukkig het ek net ses letters per hemp gehad om uit te werk. (David Unterhalter het later ‘n bekende advokaat geword wat heelwat hoë profiel sake in Suid Afrika behartig het.) Ek was baie dankbaar vir my ma wat, toe ons as kinders siek was, vir ons kruissteek lappies laat uitwerk het. Ek kon die naaldwerk “skills” wat ek toe geleer het, met groot vrug gebruik ! My naam uitgeborduur. Een van my geborduurde blou hemde en swart beret. Tydens hierdie borduur sessies van ons name op ons hemde, is ons trakteer deur ‘n paar Engelssprekende Joodjies van Johannesburg wat ‘n platespeler gehad het en die eerste LP van die Beatles oor en oor gespeel het. Die Beatles het in 1962 op die toneel verskyn in Engeland en was toe ook baie gewild in Suid Afrika. 2 Luister na die Beatles op You Tube: https://youtu.be/VadngOGKlP0 https://youtu.be/Jbt8oH5Lxto https://youtu.be/T0YifXhm-Zc Op die 2de vloer van ons slaap kwartiere was, behalwe die badkamers, ook lokale om jou klere te was en te stryk. Ons was sommer gou behendig met was en strykwerk. Komende van ‘n Afrikaanse gemeenskap en skole was dit nogal interessant om Engelssprekende ouens beter te leer ken en te besef dat hulle manier van doen anders was. Ons was gewoond om ons mond te hou en dissipline onvoorwaardelik te aanvaar. Hulle het ‘n baie dinge meer bevraagteken en selfs uitdagende houdings gehad. Ek onthou hoe lekker dit was toe ons die eerste keer kon aantree in ons blou kortbroeke en leergordels, blou hemde, swart kouse en stewels en om uit die stinkende “overalls” te kom. Omdat dit somer was kon ons ons hemde se moue oprol. Alles is relatief in die lewe en op daardie dag was dit ‘n eerste prys ! Die bevelvoerder van die SAS Simonsberg Opleidingskool was Luitenant Ray Eberlein. Hy was ‘n blondekop man met ‘n bril en ‘n hoë stem. Ek hoor nog hoe skreeu hy “Come here, you beautiful !” Hy was baie fiks en het van voor gelei. Woensdagmiddae was sport middag. Ons het ‘n paar keer op “route marches” vir etlike kilometers in gelid op die teerpad in die rigting van Kaappunt gegaan. Lt Eberlein was heel voor. As ons klas teruggekom het, was sy groep al lankal in die basis en gestort en het hy uit sy kamervenster in die offisierskwartiere vir ons geskreeu “Where have you been so long, beautifuls ?” (Hy 3 het gevorder tot “Rear Admiral en was met sy aftrede “Chief Director Manpower Provisioning and Development, SADF; Chief of Naval Staff Personnel”. Daar is daagliks saans rondtes gehou in die dormitories deur die diensdoende Offisier van die dag. Almal moes langs hulle beddens aantree en op aandag staan. Saterdagoggende was “Captains Rounds” en dan het die Bevelvoerder, Lt Eberlein en ander offisiere rondtes gedoen. Vir hierdie rondtes spesifiek moes alles perfek, en skoon en “square” wees. Die eerste 6 weke van ons Vloot opleiding by SAS Simonsberg het bestaan uit basiese opleiding in Seemanskap, of soos dit algemeen onder ons bekend gestaan het, as “Seamanship”. Elke weeksdag het begin met ‘n PT (“Physical Training”) sessie op die paradegrond, onder bevel van ‘n PTI (“Physical Training Instructor”). Na PT het almal gaan stort en het ons aangetree vir ontbyt, waarna die dag se aktiwiteite begin het. Alhoewel daar gewissel is tussen Afrikaans en Engels wat betref kennisgewings (“Daily Orders”) was die spreektaal in die Vloot Engels en alle teoretiese en praktiese opleiding was in Engels. Dit was seker ook die een jaar in my lewe wat ek die vlotste Engels ooit gepraat het. Ons moes gou ‘n paar nuwe terme aanleer in die vloot taal: • Die vloer of grond is die “deck”, of dit nou op ‘n skip of droë grond is ! As jy op die grond gaan lê, “You hit the deck”. • Manskappe is “hands”. “All hands on deck”. • Staan opsy of maak ‘n deurgang is “gangway”. ‘n Loopplank tussen die wal en die skip is ook ‘n “gangway”. • Vorentoe is “ahead”. Die toilette was gewoonlik in die voorste of boeg gedeelte van die skip. Die toilette was bekend as “the heads”. Wanneer ‘n aankondiging gemaak word, word dit voorafgegaan deur ‘n skril geluid uit ‘n gebuigde fluitjie of “pipe”. Wanneer ‘n belangrike persoon aan boord van ‘n skip kom word hy by die bokant van die loopplank aan boord verwelkom of “gepipe”. Ons basiese opleiding het die volgende behels: Parade werk. Op die parade grond is ons deur die passies van drilwerk geneem. Gelukkig was ek in die Vloot kadette en die drilwerk was maar ’n herhaling van wat ek reeds geken het. Ander praktiese opleiding het bestaan uit “Boat work”. Die vloot het twee tipe roeibote gehad. ‘n “Cutter”, wat groter was en twee persone langs mekaar gesit en roei het, en ‘n “Whaler”, wat kleiner en ligter was en slegs een persoon op ‘n bank geroei het.

Background The primary objective of this project was to prepare a series of ‘story packages’ providing the content for historical interpretive stories of the ‘far’ South Peninsula. Stories cover the geographical area of Chapman’s Peak southwards to include Imhoff, Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Kommetjie, Witsand, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough, Plateau Road, Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay to Miller’s Point, Boulders, Simon’s Town, Red Hill, Glencairn and Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. The purposes for which these stories are to be told are threefold, namely to support tourism development; to stimulate local interest; and to promote appropriate and sustainable protection of heritage resources through education, stimulation of interest and appropriate knowledge. To this end, the linking of historical stories and tourism development requires an approach to story-telling that goes beyond the mere recording of historic events. The use of accessible language has been a focus. Moreover, it requires an approach that both recognises the iconic, picture-postcard image of parts of Cape Town (to which tourists are drawn initially), but extends it further to address the particular genius loci that is Cape Town’s ‘Deep South’, in all its complexity and coloured by memory, ambivalences and contradictory experiences. We believe there is a need to balance the more conventional approach, which selects people or events deemed worthy of commemoration (for example, the Battle of Muizenberg) to tell the story of places, by interweaving popular memory and culture into these recordings (for example, the rich Muslim culture that existed in Simon’s Town before the removal under the Group Areas Act).

    Fish Hoek - The early inhabitants. In 1920 when Victor and Bertie Peers uncovered a midden of over one metre thick and several thousand years old, at what was later to be known as Peers Cave, they did much to help us understand the life of the early inhabitants of Fish Hoek. The remains of four adults and four children were found at various levels, but it was the lone skull of a male, aged thirty years and reliably dated at near to twelve thousand years that brought the world’s attention to their work. Known as The Fish Hoek Man the skull at that time, 1929, was described as ‘the largest-brained type of man so far discovered’. Peers Cave is in fact a rock-shelter, the only one of its kind in the valley. It is 123 metres above sea-level, with a 30 metre entrance under a projecting rock of 3.7 metres from the floor and 13 metres to the back wall. It is south-facing and is protected from the prevailing north-west and south-east winds. The floor consists of a black powdery soil built up of decayed vegetables and animal matter such as sea-shells, wood-ash, bones and rock fragments. Materials were always brought in to the shelter, but little was removed. This accounted for the great depths of the deposits. Besides the human remains, ostrich eggshell beads, shell pendants, remains of small skinbags, pieces of mother of pearl and stone tools were found. A separate section of the cave was used for the making of tools and spearheads.

    Rava (Risk and Vulnerability Assessment for the Western Cape) Disaster Mitigation for Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (DiMP) University of Cape Town Executive Summary Institutional context In April 2002, the Provincial Tender Board approved Phase I of a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Model for the Western Cape Province, to be undertaken jointly by the Universities of the Free State and Cape Town. Phase I of the RAVA Project represents the first step in a comprehensive risk assessment of likely disaster threats. It focuses on identifying natural and other hazards relevant to the Western Cape as well as the most appropriate institutional sources for reliable hazard information. This report addresses the interim reporting requirement to: complete an audit of hazard/disaster risk information sources and organisations relevant to the Western Cape, including the nature of information storage formats, and prepare a draft report indicating all identified natural and human-induced disasters. The UCT component reported here primarily reflects natural and other threats, and excludes information on droughts and floods. These two phenomena were analysed by the University of the Free State. The ‘Stone Anchor’ which proudly stands above Gordon’s Bay is one such Legend. We all know what the ‘GB’ represents dotted out in white stone on the mountainside, and for many of us our hair stands on end when we hear folk talk of it highlighting the town of Gordon’s Bay. A few years ago it was discovered that the street map of Cape Town (Gordon’s Bay is now included in the metropolis of Cape Town) actually indexed the anchor as “Gordon’s Bay.” This was very quickly corrected when our Chairman wrote a firm but polite letter.
