4 Abstract to the dissertation „Divided Responsibility? The Reflection of the Nationalsocialist Genocide against the Sinti and Roma in German Rememberance Policy and in Holocaust Exhibitions.” This dissertation focuses on the historical valuation of this genocide and the re- sulting controversies. Therefore it investigates, primarily in the German but also in the international rememberance work, the political, social, cultural and psycho- logical consequences resulting from this crime. Central topics are the documenta- tion, valuation and analysis of the processes developed in German rememberance work and of 20 exhibitions on nationalsocialism and holocaust including Sinti and Roma as victims shown in memorial places and museums. The evaluation of the exhibitions is based upon political, historical and pedagogical criteria. It also de- scribes the way full of conflicts Sinti and Roma had to go in order to be finally represented in these exhibitions. The society’s political, social, academic and ju- ristic interacting with German Sinti and Roma, that until the beginning of the mi- nority’s fight for civil rights in the 1970th had been characterized by prejudice, for a very long time was accompanied by neglecting the memory of their victims and denying acknowledgment. Instead of that in the very few essays on the persecu- tion of Sinti and Roma they were nothing but described in prejudice promoting ways full of stereotypes. This work also focuses on the role of the Sinti and Roma being victims of the Nazi holocaust in Germany’s present rememberance work. In this respect it also deals with the non-rememberance and questions why for such a long time even up to now they have been excluded from commemoration by poli- tics, academic research and memorial places or have been accepted only as a re- sult of heavy discussions. The work explains the contradictions between official kinds of remberance on the one hand and the expectations of the Sinti and Roma on the other hand. This work is meant to give impulses to the rememberance work, academic research, politics and society in order to broaden the knowledge and awareness of the genocide against the Sinti and Roma and its diverse conse- quences, also in order to reduce prejudice against Sinti and Roma. Besides depict- ing deficits in the rememberance work this survey aims at giving impulses for new research and sketching educational programs focussing on Sinti and Roma being acknowledged as victims of the nationalsocialist genocide. 5 Schlagworte: Deutsch: Englisch: Sinti, Roma Sinti, Roma Völkermord (Holocaust) Genocide (Holocaust) Gedenken Rememberance 6 INHALTSVERZEICHNIS 1.1 Gegenstand, Problemstellung und Ziele der Untersuchung ............................................... 9 1.2 Forschungsstand .............................................................................................................. 12 1.3 Faktenlage zu den herangezogenen Themenbereichen .................................................... 16 1.4 Theoriebezug und methodische Vorgehensweise ............................................................ 24 1.5 Quellenmaterial ............................................................................................................... 32 1.6 Wissenschaftliches Erkenntnisinteresse ........................................................................... 35 2 DER WEG ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE SINTI UND ROMA ....................... 38 2.1 Herkunft und Geschichte der Sinti und Roma in Europa ................................................... 42 2.2 Auswirkungen des Nationalsozialismus auf Sinti und Roma ............................................. 47 2.2.1 Die NS-Rassenpolitik als Grundlage der Vernichtung .................................................. 49 2.2.2 Der Weg in den Genozid .............................................................................................. 52 2.2.3 Mordaktionen .............................................................................................................. 65 2.2.4 Bilanz des Völkermords an den Sinti und Roma .......................................................... 75 2.2.5 Streitpunkte des erinnerungspolitischen und historischen Diskurses ........................ 76 2.3 Die Situation in der Nachkriegszeit .................................................................................. 90 2.3.1 Aufbau einer neuen Existenz und gesellschaftliche Re-Integration ............................ 92 2.3.2 Kontinuierliche Diskriminierung in der Tätergesellschaft ........................................... 96 2.3.3 Trauer und Trauma der Betroffenen und Bedeutung des Gedenkens ...................... 101 2.4 Die Bürgerrechtsarbeit der Sinti und Roma als Basis für die Erinnerungsarbeit .............. 112 2.4.1 Die Protagonisten und ihre Ziele ............................................................................... 115 2.4.2 Menschen- und Minderheitenrechte ........................................................................ 119 2.5 Bekämpfung des Rassismus und des Antiziganismus ..................................................... 133 2.5.1 Antiziganistische Darstellung in der Literatur und in der Presse ............................... 136 2.5.2 Antiziganistische Darstellung im Film und in der Fotographie .................................. 142 3 VERANTWORTUNG, ERINNERN, GEDENKEN ........................................ 149 3.1 Entwicklungen der deutschen Erinnerungsarbeit nach 1945 .......................................... 150 7 3.2 Leugnung, Verdrängung, Marginalisierung des Genozids an den Sinti und Roma ........... 179 3.3 Deutungsmächte in der deutschen Erinnerungskultur ................................................... 180 4 AUSSTELLUNGEN ZUM GENOZID AN DEN SINTI UND ROMA .......... 183 4.1 Der schwierige Weg in die Ausstellungen ....................................................................... 186 4.2 Erwartungen und Zielkonflikte ....................................................................................... 188 4.3 Erinnerungspolitische Gremienarbeit in Gedenkstätten und Lagerkomitees .................. 190 4.3.1 Stiftung Topographie des Terrors .............................................................................. 192 4.3.2 Stiftung Brandenburgische Gedenkstätten ............................................................... 193 4.3.3 Stiftung Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora .......................................

May 2019 Poles as Pigs in MAUS The Problems with Spiegelman’s MAUS Spiegelman’s representation of Poles as pigs is “a calculated insult” leveled against Poles. The Norton Anthology of American Literature, 7th edition Maus made me feel that Poland was somehow responsible for the Holocaust, or at least that many Poles collaborated in it.1 These materials were prepared for the Canadian Polish Congress by a team of researchers and reviewed for accuracy by historians at the Institute for World Politics, Washington, DC. 1. Background MAUS is a comic book – sometimes called a graphic novel – authored by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman. The core of the book is an extended interview by the author/narrator with his father, a Polish Jew named Vladek, focusing on his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. Although MAUS has been described as both a memoir and fiction, it is widely treated as non-fiction. Time placed it on their list of non-fiction books. MAUS is considered to be a postmodern book. It is a story about storytelling that weaves several conflicting narratives (historical, psychological and autobiographical). The book employs various postmodern techniques as well as older literary devices. A prominent feature of the book is the author’s depiction of 1 Seth J. MAUS has been taught widely in U.S. high schools, and even elementary schools, as part of the literature curriculum for many years.

  • Facts About the ADL
1 Facts About the ADL Abraham H. Foxman Howard P.Berkowitz National Director National Chairman The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, or ADL for short, is the most powerful pro-Israeli political lobby in the United States. With a budget of almost $60,000,000 per year and a powerful political network, they wield enormous influence over US political, governmental, and mainstream media activities. On its official website (www.adl.org), they make the claim... “For more than 88 years, ADL has been combating anti-Semitism and bigotry of all kinds.” This statement represents the very foundation of their typical deception and hypocrisy. In fact for more than 88 years, the ADL has engaged in illegal, criminal, unethical, and un- American activities. The ADL has been charged with over 4,600 felony counts, and subsequently taken to court, for stealing police documents. They spy on individual American citizens and groups of all political stripes for Israel. The ADL has promoted and enabled widespread censorship, promoted and pushed anti-American legislation, some of which specifically violates American civil liberties, rights and constitutional protections. The ADL has committed smear campaigns against those who speak out against global Jewish and Israeli terrorism, and have received money from and established ties with wealthy criminals and criminal organizations. In April 2000, William and Dorothy Quigley of Colorado won a $10.5 million damage award from a federal jury in a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League. The jury found that the ADL falsely accused the couple of being anti-Semitic. We strongly encourage you to verify these facts..

  • How Bush's Grandfather Helped Hitler's Rise to Power
How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power Rumors of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades. Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president Ben Aris in Berlin and Duncan Campbell in Washington guardian.co.uk, Saturday 25 September 2004 23.59 BST Article history George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany. The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism. His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy. The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair.

In the wake of this defeat, which seemed to cast doubt on the viability of their politics, these German communists embarked on an odyssey that would test their political mettle not only in the immediate aftermath of their forced exodus from Spain but also for decades to come. Initially, they underwent a troubling change of context as they transitioned from political militancy in Spain to the disempowering context of internment in France. After their patron state, the Soviet Union, signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Nazi Germany on August 23, 1939, these longtime antifascists struggled in their everyday lives as internees to negotiate concomitant changes in their politics that stemmed from this unforeseen shift in global political constellations. For many veterans who settled in the German Democratic Republic in the postwar years, the difficulties associated with these troubled times came back to haunt them by providing persons who scrutinized their past political conduct with iii grounds for questioning their allegiance to the very cause to which they long strived so desperately to remain unswervingly loyal.
