These concerts not only feature the talents of students preparing to become the stars of tomorrow, but also feature faculty performers and guest artists. From fall through spring, these musical events showcase our internationally acclaimed opera and choral programs, the Duquesne University Symphony Orchestra and the award-winning Wind Symphony, as well as a wide variety of jazz ensembles, chamber music concerts and solo recitals. Performance venues As a member of an ensemble, our students take the stage at some of the best venues for music in the city, as well as on campus. The performance spaces include the historic and acoustically superb Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland as well as two locations in the School of Music: the 250-seat PNC Recital Hall and our new Pappert Center, which includes state-of-the art performing and recording facilities. Each mark is uniquely defined by a font, color, abstract geometric pattern, and one of a handful of texture treatments. These basic elements will be expanded into page layout (specifically contemporary ensemble in the upcoming events catalogue), and supplemented by appropriate photography and design motifs, so as to build the larger graphic look for each. Rev.1: 7-19-10 ELECTRONIC ENSEMBLE Sunday, October 14 Symphony Orchestra Jeffrey Turner, conductor Carnegie Music Hall—Oakland, 8 p.m. $10 Suggested Donation The Duquesne Symphony Orchestra is central to the curriculum at the Mary Pappert School of Music. An integral feature of basic musicianship training that all instrumentalists in every degree program receive, the orchestral program helps students develop the understanding, technique and discipline required of professional orchestral musicians. Sunday, November 11 Orchestra membersClassic rehearse three Guitartimes each week and Ensemble attend classes in orchestral H. Carl Hess, conductor excerpts and orchestra repertoire for brass, percussion, woodwind and string sections. Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, 8 p.m. $10 Suggested Donation The Symphony Orchestra performs in Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall, renowned for its architectural beauty, and in Pittsburgh’s premiere orchestral venue, Heinz Hall. In a typical school year, the Symphony Orchestra performs four to six concerts of major works from Sunday, December 9 the standard orchestral repertoire, as well as a diverse range of music from Baroque to Contemporary. Soloists with the orchestra frequently include principal players from the Concerto Competition Concert world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
