Each season, Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music offers a wide array of superb musical performances. These concerts not only feature the talents of students preparing to become the stars of tomorrow, but also feature faculty performers and guest artists. From fall through spring, these musical events showcase our internationally acclaimed opera and choral programs, the Duquesne University Symphony Orchestra and the award-winning Wind Symphony, as well as a wide variety of jazz ensembles, chamber music concerts and solo recitals.

Performance venues

As a member of an ensemble, our students take the stage at some of the best venues for music in the city, as well as on campus. The performance spaces include the historic and acoustically superb Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland as well as two locations in the School of Music: the 250-seat PNC Recital Hall and our new Pappert Center, which includes state-of-the art performing and recording facilities.

— 4 — School of Music Ensemble Identity Elements (6/22/10) Wind Symphony & Symphony Band This set of graphic identities is meant to uniquely distinguish each ensemble within the School of Music while still maintaining an overall consistency of elements and a unified visual correspondence.

Each mark is uniquely defined by a font, color, abstract geometric pattern, and one of a handful of texture treatments. These basic elements will be expanded into page layout (specifically contemporary ensemble in the upcoming events catalogue), and supplemented by appropriate photography and design motifs, so as to build the larger graphic look for each.

An integral feature of basic musicianship training that all instrumentalists in every degree program receive, the orchestral program helps students develop the understanding, technique and discipline required of professional orchestral musicians. In a typical school year, the Symphony Orchestra performs four to six concerts of major works from Sunday, December 9 the standard orchestral repertoire, as well as a diverse range of music from Baroque to Contemporary. Soloists with the orchestra frequently include principal players from the Concerto Competition Concert world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Duquesne University Opera Workshop, under the direction of Guenko Guechev, is a training and performing ensemble open to undergraduate and graduate voice students. Each year the Opera Workshop presents a fully staged production, a performance of selected scenes and programs of arias and outreach performances in the community, including their “Opera in the PercussionAisles” series at the Giant Eagle Market District Ensemble in Robinson Township. Recent Opera Workshop productions have included Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, Carlisle Floyd’s Wuthering Heights, Benjamin Lees’ Medea in Corinth, Wolf-Ferrari’s The Inquisitive Women, Rossini’s La Scala di Seta, Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera, Puccini's Soeur Angelica and Gianni Schicci and Adamo's Little Women. Duquesne University receives national acclaim for its jazz program. The Duquesne University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mike Tomaro, has been a principal performing group for many years. Duquesne University’s guitar ensembles offer students a chance to perform exciting guitar repertoire in two distinctPappert styles: classic guitar, Men’s Chorale under the directionVoices of Michael Chapman, of andSpirit jazz guitar, under the direction of Mark Koch and Kenneth Karsh. The classic ensemble performs music from all styles of the 400 years of classic guitar development. The jazz guitar ensemble performs in the traditional jazz and jazz-fusion styles with a rhythm section. Students are encouraged to submit their own arrangements, which are performed each semester. Both ensembles have gained regional and national attention, with featured performances at local jazz venues and conventions as well as at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall and the Tri-State Guitar’s Finest Hour recitals.
