ABSTRACT An attempt has been made to study and record the diverse coastal geomorphic features along Visakhapatnam – Bhimunipatnam coast. The study area is marked by geomorphic features resulted from various coastal and land ward processes. The geomorphic units under different heads namely, features formed by present day wave action, features formed due to sea level oscillations and features formed by rock and sea water interaction have been presented. The influence of sea level oscillations and land and sea interaction forms a diverse coastal geomorphology along the coast. The details of features such as beach, dune system, inter tidal deposits, red sediments, wave cut platform, marine terrace, sea stack, sea cave, serpent hood structures, promontories, wind gap and natural bridge have been recorded and the formation as well as significance of their occurrence are presented. The coastal geomorphology of the study area clearly established not only the sea level oscillations but also variations in climatic conditions in this part of the coast. A total of 120 fishes in this group are listed as occurring in India based on published literature, of which 25 require further confirmation and validation. We confirm here the presence of at least 95 species in 22 genera occurring in Indian marine waters. -

A compilation of 107 references dealing with fish parasites in New Caledonia permitted the production of a parasite-host list and a host-parasite list. The lists include Turbellaria, Monopisthocotylea, Polyopisthocotylea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Copepoda, Isopoda, Acanthocephala and Hirudinea, with 580 host-parasite combinations, corresponding with more than 370 species of parasites. Protozoa are not included. Platyhelminthes are the major group, with 239 species, including 98 monopisthocotylean monogeneans and 105 digeneans. Copepods include 61 records, and nematodes include 41 records. The list of fish recorded with parasites includes 195 species, in which most (ca. 170 species) are coral reef associated, the rest being a few deep-sea, pelagic or freshwater fishes. The serranids, lethrinids and lutjanids are the most commonly represented fish families. Although a list of published records does not provide a reliable estimate of biodiversity because of the important bias in publications being mainly in the domain of interest of the authors, it provides a basis to compare parasite biodiversity with other localities, and especially with other coral reefs. The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes. -

Snapper and grouper are important fishery resources with great commercial value for exporters to major international markets. The fisheries also support the livelihoods and food security of many local, small-scale fishing communities worldwide. It is therefore all the more critical that management of these fisheries improves, thus ensuring this important resource will remain available to provide both food and income. Landings of snapper and grouper have been steadily increasing: in the 1950s, total landings were about 50,000 tonnes, but they had grown to more than 612,000 tonnes by 2013. -

Indian Ocean) Cephalopholis formosa (Shaw, 1804) OTHER SCIENTIFIC NAMES STILL IN USE : (often misidentified as Cephalopholis boenack, which is a dif- ferent species) VERNACULAR NAMES: FAO : En - Bluelined hind Fr - Vielle lignes bleues Sp - Cherna rayada NATIONAL : DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERS : Body depth 2.5 to 2.9 times in standard length. Middle opercular spine much closer to lower than to upper spine; preopercle very finely serrate, the lower edge fleshy; a small knob on lower edge of maxilla near distal end; lower gillrakers 14 to 16. Dorsal fin with 9 spines and 17 soft rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 8 soft rays; pectoral fin rays 17; caudal fin rounded. Pored lateral Line scales 49 to 52; lateral scale series 99 to 102. Colour: head and body usually dark brown, with wavy longitudinal blue lines; some specimens with ground colour yellowish or reddish brown on ventral half of head and body. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERS OF SIMILAR SPECIES OCCURRING IN THE AREA: Cephalopholis species: no blue lines on dark brown background of head and body Gracila polleni: caudal fin truncate; body and fins yellowish, with horizontal blue lines; anal fin rays 9. SIZE : Maximum: 34 cm. Gracila polleni GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION AND BEHAVIOUR : Northern part of the Western Indian Ocean (northward from about 8° S), but not in the Red Sea or the "Gulf". While the contribution of climate warming to the loss of live coral cover has been well documented, the associated effects on fish have not. Such information is important as coral reef fish assemblages provide critical contributions to ecosystem function and services. This thesis assesses the medium to long term impacts of coral loss on fish assemblages in the western Indian Ocean. Feeding observations of corallivorous butterflyfish demonstrates that considerable feeding plasticity occurs among habitat types, but strong relationships exist between degree of specialisation and declines in abundance following coral loss. Furthermore, obligate corallivores are lost fairly rapidly following decline in coral cover, whereas facultative corallivores are sustained until the structure of the dead coral begins to erode. Surveys of benthic and fish assemblages in Mauritius spanning 11 years highlight small changes in both benthos and fish through time, but strong spatial trends associated with dredging and inter-specific competition. In Seychelles, although there was little change in biomass of fishery target species above size of first capture, size spectra analysis of the entire assemblage revealed a loss of smaller individuals (<30cm) and an increase in the larger individuals (>45cm). -
