  • Development and Adoption of Appropriate Technologies for Project Title: Enhancing Productivity in the Indian Bicycle and Bicycle Parts Sector
UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION Project number: 160072 Development and adoption of appropriate technologies for Project title: enhancing productivity in the Indian bicycle and bicycle parts sector. Relationship to N/A integrated programme Thematic area code GC21 Starting date: 13 June 2016 Duration: 21 months Project site: Republic of India Government Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of Co-ordinating agency: India Research and Development Centre for Bicycle and Sewing Machines (RDCBSM) Counterpart: All India Cycle Manufacturers Association (AICMA), United Cycle & Parts Manufactures Association (UCPMA) Executing agency/ UNIDO cooperating agency: Project Inputs: - UNIDO inputs: - Support costs (13%): 211,965 - Counterpart inputs: 1,630,500 - Grand Total: 1,842,465 Brief description: The bicycle industry in India has been in existence since 1931 and has made a significant contribution to the Indian economy in terms of employment generation and GDP. Recent figures indicate that the sector employs around 1 million people1. According to recent data, 3,773 small units concentrated in Ludhiana, Punjab, are responsible for approximately 60% of bicycles and over 80% of requisite parts and components production. India produces 10% of the global production of bicycles, but the majority share of this is in terms of low value models. The Indian bicycle and bicycle parts sector is going through a difficult situation due to an increase in steel prices2 and the fact that progressively, more leading global manufacturers are turning to China for parts. Traditionally, the industry has concentrated its efforts on conventional indigenously developed technologies. These have limited production processes, with products being mainly the traditional types of bicycles for domestic and export market.

  • Introduction 1
NOTES Introduction 1. For text and discussion of this important letter, see Petrarch, Senile V 2, ed. Monica Berté (Florence: Le Lettere, 1998). Petrarch’s scribe, who attaches the date “August 28,” seems to have dictated it in 1364, but Boccaccio didn’t receive it until 1366. It was one of three letters (Seniles 5.1–3) stolen and kept as souvenirs of their famed author by the messenger charged with their deliv- ery. Petrarch recovered them and asked his trusted friend Donato Albanzani to carry them to their destination. See the commentary by Ugo Dotti in Pe- trarch’s Lettres de la veillesse. Rerum senilium, ed. Elvira Nota (Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 2003), 2:529, n. 42. For the English, see Petrarch, Letters of Old Age. Rerum senilium libri I–XVII, trans. Aldo S. Bernardo, Saul Levin, and Reta A. Bernardo (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992). 2. Petrarch tries to soothe Boccaccio by recalling Seneca, who ranked Cicero second after Virgil among Latin writers, followed by Asinius Pollio, and then Livy. The fl attering implication is that Boccaccio is “one up” on Livy. In an earlier letter to Boccaccio (Familiares 21.15), Petrarch cringes to think of Dante’s plebian public—fullers, tavern keepers, and woolworkers. He acknowledges, however, Dante’s superiority in the vernacular. See Petrarch Familiares 21.15.24 in Le familiari, ed. Vittorio Rossi and Umberto Bosco (Florence: Sansoni, 1926–42), 4:99: “in vulgari eloquio quam carminibus aut prosa clarior atque altior assurgit”; for the translation, Letters on Familiar Mat- ters: Rerum familiarium libri XVII–XXIV, trans.

  • The Sociolinguistic Fortune of Culinary Terms of Apicius’ De Re Coquinaria
AN ETYMOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF FOODSTUFFS AND UTENSILS: THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC FORTUNE OF CULINARY TERMS OF APICIUS’ DE RE COQUINARIA Chuck Johnson A dissertation submitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages. Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by: Advisor: Dr. Lucia Binotti Reader: Dr. Frank Dominguez Reader: Dr. Monica Rector Reader: Dr. Hassan Melehy Reader: Dr. Adriano Duque 2006 Chuck Johnson ii ABSTRACT CHUCK JOHNSON: An Etymological Exploration to Foodstuffs and Utensils: The Sociolinguistic Fortune of Culinary Terms of Apicius’ De re coquinaria. (Under the direction of Lucia Binotti) This study will trace the sociolinguistic fortune of the culinary terms from Apicius’ De re coquinaria into the major medieval romance dialects. As the only cookbook from antiquity, the culinary context of De re coquinaria offers a social context in which we may observe sociolinguistic change and variation from Latin to the major medieval romance dialects. We may observe dialectal phonological and morphological change and variation of the culinary terms, their sociolinguistic stratification based on socially determined variables including class, internal and foreign linguistic borrowing based on prestige and culinary innovation, and diachronic dialectal semantic change. This study will demonstrate ultimately linguistic conservatism or innovation of the culinary terms in the major medieval romance dialects. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Chapter I INTRODUCTION . 1 Author . 1 Manuscripts and Early Imprints . .5 Printed Editions of DRC . .7 Structure of DRC . 9 The Present Study . .11 II CORPUS . .16 Introduction . 16 Greens . 19 Root Vegetables .

  • Bike Ownership and Behavior, (Iii) Shopping Behavior, and (Iv) Willingness-To-Pay for “Sustainable” Bikes
0 Executive Summary Specialized Bicycle Components, the third largest bicycle brand in the United States, partnered with the Nicholas School for the Environment (NSOE) at Duke University to better understand the environmental impact of bicycle manufacturing, determine where the bicycle industry might best focus its future improvements, and determine the current state of interest for sustainably made bikes. This research was conducted between May of 2013 and May of 2014. As indicated through the limited amount of published environmental programs, the bicycle industry has done little to address its impact. The outdoor industry, however, transparently communicates the environmental and social work it’s doing. The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) has been dedicated to lessening the environmental impact of the outdoor industry’s manufacturing processes for several years through brand collaboration in the Sustainability Working Groups (SWG). While the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) is a member of the OIA, it has not participated in any of the OIA SWG endeavors (Outdoor Industry Association, 2013). Specialized did, however, join the OIA with the specific intent to encourage the creation of sustainability metrics appropriate for the bicycle industry (Bainbridge, 2014d). Perhaps the outdoor industry is ahead of the bicycle industry in addressing sustainability due to a lack of negative attention from environmental advocacy organizations. Recently there has been some indication that the bicycle industry has started to become interested in supply chain sustainability through the 2009 release of the Trek Eco Design bicycle line, the start of U.S. carbon recycling programs, and a recent panel discussion on sustainability at the Bicycle Leadership Conference (Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, 2012; Huang, 2009; Staff, 2013).
