George Harry Devall (1869-1956) George Harry Devall (1869-1956) George Harry Devall (1869-1956) practised from 1895 until he retired to Wales in 19341. Mr Devall was quite prolific in the area we know today as north Edgbaston (which is essentially that part of Edgbaston north of the Hagley Road). George Devall was born in Birmingham in 1869, the eldest son of George and Phoebe Devall who originally came from Dudley, Worcestershire. His father was a Pawnbroker2 and in 1891 (when George was 12) the family was living in Dudley Road, Birmingham2. The area that George grew up in would be a stone’s throw from the area where he would ultimately make his living. In the 1891 Census he is shown as an Architect’s Clerk, living with his father in Heath Street, Birmingham and by 1895 he is listed for the first time in Kelly’s Directory of Birmingham as an Architect and Surveyor. In 1906 G. H. Devall was elected an Associate member of The Birmingham Architectural Association3. The Association, which was was affiliated to the RIBA, was founded in 1873 to promote the union and professional integrity of architects and for the general advancement of architecture in Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. In 1921, at the age of 62, Devall became a Fellow of the Association and remained so until 19254 when he retired from the Association. A large number of properties were built by him during his professional life, many of which are large detached and semi-detached villa residences for the Victorian and Edwardian middle-classes. However, he also designed a number of attractive terraced houses in Winson Green, Edgbaston and Harborne, most notably War Lane, Hartledon Road and Victoria Road in Harborne, all of which are still extant. In these latter three roads, he uses highly decorative terracotta to include columns, corinthian capitals, pediments and cartouches (see Figs. 13 and 14). Evidence of his productive career can be seen in Appendix A which lists the Planning Applications submitted by him from 1895 to 1912. After 1911 his attentions appear to have switched from Private Dwelling Houses and focussed more on the commercial, as many of the Planning Applications subsequent to 1911 relate to Motor Houses, Shops, Manufactories and alterations5. ____________________________________________________ 1 E-mail from his Great Niece, Louise McCrea 2006 2 1891 Census 3 The Birmingham Architectural Association Annual Reports (Green Book) 1904 – 1925 4 The Birmingham Architectural Association Annual Report (Green Book) 1921 5 Birmingham City Building Registers 1911-1920 Page 1 of 9 Much of his work of the larger villa style is concentrated in the Edgbaston roads of Melville Road, Clarendon Road, Montague Road, Gillott Road, Rotton Park Road and City Road (the latter two being notable for the large number of houses he designed there). His own house, where he lived from 1901 to 1934 at 152 Rotton Park Road also survives and is a very attractive Edwardian detached villa. He also designed houses on individual plots in Edgbaston on Hagley Road, Lordswood Road, Portland Road and Somerset Road, many of which are still extant, but some, despite being in Conservation Areas, are at risk (See Figs 10-12). A small sample of his other work is found in the photographs contained in Appendix B. Stephen Hartland 27th February 2006 Page 2 of 9 APPENDIX A Planning Applications Lodged by George H. • Making Space for Sex Work: Female Street Prostitution and the Production of Urban Space
Volume 27.1 March 2003 75±89 International Journal of Urban and Regional Research Making Space for Sex Work: Female Street Prostitution and the Production of Urban Space PHIL HUBBARD and TEELA SANDERS Introduction It has been widely asserted that the female prostitute constitutes a central figure in the social imagination, playing an important symbolic role in the definition of moral standards. For example, many commentators have noted that the street prostitute has been stereotypically depicted as a motif of degeneracy, contagion and sexual lasciviousness, and hence a threat to male bourgeois values (Walkowitz, 1992; O’Neill, 2001). Similarly, the idea that the criminalization of street prostitution has been a means of establishing wider notions of what is socially and morally acceptable has also been widely documented (Duncan, 1996). Yet there have been few studies that have related these general ideas to specific spaces, detailing how female prostitution is implicated in the making of urban orders. Exceptions note that prostitution tends to be concentrated in particular areas, but say little of the processes by which these spaces are produced. For example, while Symanski (1981) provided an extensive mapping of the varied ‘immoral landscapes’ existing in different historical and geographical contexts, his work made little mention of the appropriation, occupation and use of these landscapes, particularly the way they are shaped by female sex workers. Equally, Ashworth et al. (1988) sought to extend Symanski’s analysis, theorizing the location of vice in the city as the outcome of consumer choice within socio-legal constraints, but ignored the way that sex workers create red-light districts through their distinctive spatial practices (which change according to legislative climate, levels of mutual support, client demand and so on — see Brewis and Linstead, 2000).

These conditions are available for inspection at the Vendors Solicitors office, 5 working days before the sale and may also be inspected in the sale-room prior to the auction sale but they will NOT then be read. The purchaser shall be deemed to bid upon these terms whether they have inspected the conditions or not. AUCTIONEERS ADVICE If your bid is successful, you will have entered into a binding contract to purchase that particular Lot. It is therefore important that you consider the following: 1. It is important for you to view the property and satisfy yourself as to the condition, obtaining any Surveyors reports you may feel appropriate. Viewing arrangements for each Lot are shown in the catalogue. Inspection of investment properties, is by courtesy of the tenant(s) and full consideration should be given to their occupancy. 2. It is assumed that interested parties have carefully inspected the relevant properties and made appropriate pre-contract searches and enquiries.
