    St George District Cricket Club was founded as a subdistrict club in 1911 under the auspices of the NSW Cricket Association, the President of St George DCC being Mr J. Lister. Hurstville Oval at that time was not an enclosed ground - despite persistent pressure on the Council. The original area of Hurstville Park (of seven acres) was bought from the McMahon Estate in the early years of the century, and vested in the council. The ground was fenced, planted and developed by cricket lovers over a period of several years - and in 1911 famous Australian left-hander Warren Bardsley brought an invitation X1 to Hurstville Oval to play the St. George district team, on the official opening day. St George began playing in First Grade in 1921 and then competed in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade competitions. They also entered teams in Shires competition in 1926 and continued to play teams in that competition from 1926 to 1947 and again from 1965 to 1968. A 4th grade team had begun to play in 1934 and has continued to the present with a break from 1940 to 1948. With the introduction of 5th grade in 1969 there was no further participation in the Shires competition. Currently, St George DCC Inc fields teams in the 1st to 5th grade competitions, the Poidevin-Gray Shield (Under 21), the A.W.Green Shield (Under 16) and the 1st Grade Limited Overs competition. St George’s best known player is of course Sir Donald Bradman who came to the club in 1926 and later stayed at the Rockdale home of then club secretary Mr F.

    A legend and a gentleman - Arthur Morris By TONY STEPHENS Aug. 24, 2015, 9:37 p.m. Arthur Morris 1922-2015 ARTHUR Morris didn’t mind being overshadowed by Don Bradman; sometimes he even enjoyed it. Occasionally asked what he was doing when Bradman, in his last Test innings, was famously bowled for a duck, Morris would say he was at The Oval, London, in 1948. Doing what? ‘‘Playing. I was up the other end.’’ How did Arthur go? ‘‘I managed 196.’’ Morris died on Saturday. He managed to help that Australian team, called The Invincibles, to win that Test and the series, 4-0. In the previous Test, at Leeds, Morris managed 182 in a 301-run partnership with Bradman, helping Australia to chase 404 runs for victory in 345 minutes. He had helped Bradman, then troubled by Denis Compton’s bowling, by hitting the Englishman out of the attack. The partnership brought the then highest winning fourth-innings Test score. Morris hit three centuries and three more fifties in the 1948 Tests, to top the averages with 87; Bradman’s average was 72.57. Wisden named Morris one of the ‘‘cricketers of the year’’. Neville Cardus wrote: ‘‘Morris played pedigree cricket; blue-blood aristocracy.’’ And: ‘‘Morris was once more beyond praise – masterful, stylish, imperturbable, sure in defence, quick and handsome in stroke play. His batting is true to himself, charming and good mannered but reliant and thoughtful.’’ Other distinguished English cricket writers shared Cardus’ admiration. E.W. Swanton wrote: ‘‘Few more charming men have played for Australia and I cannot name one who was more popular with his opponents.’’ John Arlott said of Morris: ‘‘One of the best-liked cricketers of all time – charming, philosophical and relaxed.’’ Captain Bradman said: ‘‘He wasn’t always straight in defence.

Neil Harvey's eyes grow wistful as he gazes from his seat in the Tavern Stand upon the venerated playing arena he first visited as a callow year- old, more than seven decades earlier, in the company of greatness. Harvey, who turns 91 in October, is the last surviving member of arguably the most revered Australia men's cricket team to tour England — Invincible: Still Standing v. 12 Bradman's 'Invincibles' who spent almost five months in the UK during and played 31 first-class matches, losing none of them. There is much that stirs Harvey's heart as he walks through the heavy cast-iron Grace Gates and along the narrow bitumen roadway that leads directly to the rust- red pavilion. So much has changed since he first made that walk in the shadow of World War Two — the grandstands that flank the heritage-protected main building, the media centre that hovers above the Nursery End like a Bond villain's lair, the LED-lit advertising screens that obliterate the quaint white wooden perimeter fence. But there are many less tangible elements of the Lord's experience that remain unchanged for the man regarded among the premier left-handers to have batted Invincible: Still Standing v.
