First and foremost, congratulations to Hawkes Bay CA for arranging this Tournament against all odds and Covid 19! And a thanks to the Hawkes Bay weather, too – games were on grass pitches, unobtainable in Auckland. Here, our season proper isn’t going to start till Saturday, 31 October – 3 weeks later that what was once the norm. Ben Rae – 71 vs Napier OB Marist and 84 in the Final vs Taita The Final – Parnell batting at Nelson Park, Napier The Parnell team wasn’t at full strength – Black Caps and Aces Lockie Ferguson, Mark Chapman, Will Somerville, Corey Anderson, Ben Horne, Ollie Pringle all absent. Also Prem regular Ganesh Ratnasabapathy and returnee Henry King remained in Auckland and aided our Reserves. But youngsters Nathan Robinson and Sam Jenkin did travel, given opportunities and will have learned plenty from the experience of the trip away. To win all 5 games was a great start to the Season and, hopefully, a sign of great cricket to come. Back in Auckland - Our Prem Reserves Parnell Prem Reserves vs North Shore - Parnell lost to North Shore by 1 run It may have been a loss but Coach Roy Goodyear was full of praise for his Team that included a number of schoolboys. According to Roy long time stalwarts Ganesh Ratnasabapathy, Henry King, Will Ormiston and Simon Walker all performed well aided hugely by Varun Garg and Harry Sinclair with the bat. Varun – your running between the wickets was complimented as was your 2nd wicket stand of 75 with newcomer Michael Fourie. Michael, welcome to Parnell and well batted, too. Max Chaplin impressed with his chinamen and Charles Wilkes excelled behind the stumps – a catch and 2 stumpings. Obviously a marvellous game of cricket and strong prospects for the future. Roy Goodyear On rather a sad note we now farewell Roy as a contracted coach at Parnell. Roy has resigned but is still available for private coaching in addition to his continuing duties with Auckland Cricket. Roy joined us at Parnell some 5 years ago bringing a wealth of coaching experience to us after highly successful stints at, first St Kentigern and then King’s Colleges. At King’s, in particular, Roy took their 1st XI to successive Gillette Cup wins in 2010 and 2011. Notable players who excelled under his watch were Mark Chapman and Ben Horne and one doesn’t have to comment further about their further exploits for Parnell and beyond. Nathan Williamson, Tom Urry and Simon Hickey were others who excelled under Roy’s watch at King’s. At Parnell, Roy has given sage mentorship to many, particularly to our Premier Reserves over the last two seasons. Of great help to Skipper Razin, he also mentored a number of players – Will Ormiston and Giacomo Lamplough both hit 180s last season helped by his encouragement. Roy, thank you for sharing your wealth of cricketing knowledge and experience with us – including reminicences of your playing career in Rhodesia/Zimbawe and then Natal in the company of contemporary legends such as Barry Richards, the Pollock brothers and Mike Proctor. A farewell in one respect, we still look forward to seeing you back at the TJC, feeding the bowling machine, and, from the Shore Road boundary, watching your protegees excel with bat and ball. There are only 16 in NZ with this qualification and it`s the equivalent of ECB`s level 4 coaching certificate. Congratulations Ian – wonderful news , your coaching expertise will be of enormous benefit to Parnell and, in particular, our players who receive your tuition. The first round starts off against Takapuna, away on the 31st of October. We are still looking for female cricketers to fill spots throughout the season. Covid 19 has a lot to answer for!! Finally those great performances of the past 2019/20 Season will be properly recognised and, hopefully, inspire the trophy recipients to even greater deeds in 2020/21. And, just as hopefully, inspire others to emulate those winners with their own outstanding performances. Prizegiving and Opening Day, October 1954 – the Gutry Trophy being awarded by Parnell’s President Jack Forsman Venue was Thos. Bloodworth Park (and Councilor Tom Bloodworth would have been present). Anyone recognisable in the crowd? Terry Jarvis and Mark Burgess were members and your Editor had just joined the Club.
