Other clubs particpating, but which we didn’t meet, were Athletic OB (Nelson - 1 win/3 lost), Horowhenua Kapiti (1/3), Taradale (Hawkes Bay – 3/1), North Shore (Auckland – 3/1).

First and foremost, congratulations to Hawkes Bay CA for arranging this Tournament against all odds and Covid 19! And a thanks to the Hawkes Bay weather, too – games were on grass pitches, unobtainable in Auckland. Here, our season proper isn’t going to start till Saturday, 31 October – 3 weeks later that what was once the norm.

Ben Rae – 71 vs Napier OB Marist and 84 in the Final vs Taita The Final – Parnell at Nelson Park, Napier The Parnell team wasn’t at full strength – Black Caps and Aces , Mark Chapman, Will Somerville, Corey Anderson, Ben Horne, Ollie Pringle all absent. Also Prem regular Ganesh Ratnasabapathy and returnee Henry King remained in Auckland and aided our Reserves. But youngsters Nathan Robinson and Sam Jenkin did travel, given opportunities and will have learned plenty from the experience of the trip away. To win all 5 games was a great start to the Season and, hopefully, a sign of great cricket to come.

Back in Auckland - Our Prem Reserves Parnell Prem Reserves vs North Shore - Parnell lost to North Shore by 1 It may have been a loss but Coach Roy Goodyear was full of praise for his Team that included a number of schoolboys. According to Roy long time stalwarts Ganesh Ratnasabapathy, Henry King, Will Ormiston and Simon Walker all performed well aided hugely by Varun Garg and Harry Sinclair with the bat. Varun – your running between the was complimented as was your 2nd stand of 75 with newcomer Michael Fourie. Michael, welcome to Parnell and well batted, too. Max Chaplin impressed with his chinamen and Charles Wilkes excelled behind the stumps – a catch and 2 stumpings. Obviously a marvellous game of cricket and strong prospects for the future.

Roy Goodyear

On rather a sad note we now farewell Roy as a contracted coach at Parnell. Roy has resigned but is still available for private coaching in addition to his continuing duties with Auckland Cricket. Roy joined us at Parnell some 5 years ago bringing a wealth of coaching experience to us after highly successful stints at, first St Kentigern and then King’s Colleges. At King’s, in particular, Roy took their 1st XI to successive Gillette Cup wins in 2010 and 2011. Notable players who excelled under his watch were Mark Chapman and Ben Horne and one doesn’t have to comment further about their further exploits for Parnell and beyond. Nathan Williamson, Tom Urry and Simon Hickey were others who excelled under Roy’s watch at King’s. At Parnell, Roy has given sage mentorship to many, particularly to our Premier Reserves the last two seasons. Of great help to Skipper Razin, he also mentored a number of players – Will Ormiston and Giacomo Lamplough both hit 180s last season helped by his encouragement. Roy, thank you for sharing your wealth of cricketing knowledge and experience with us – including reminicences of your playing career in Rhodesia/Zimbawe and then Natal in the company of contemporary legends such as , the Pollock brothers and Mike Proctor. A farewell in one respect, we still look forward to seeing you back at the TJC, feeding the machine, and, from the Shore Road , watching your protegees excel with bat and ball.

Back in August, Ian completed his Cricket High Performance Coach programme, a process which had been going on for the last two years. There are only 16 in NZ with this qualification and it`s the equivalent of ECB`s level 4 coaching certificate. Congratulations Ian – wonderful news , your coaching expertise will be of enormous benefit to Parnell and, in particular, our players who receive your tuition.

Junior Prizegiving – Rescheduled For Sunday, 18 October

First it was to be held late March, then on 18 September and now it will be on Sunday, 18 October. Covid 19 has a lot to answer for!! Finally those great performances of the past 2019/20 Season will be properly recognised and, hopefully, inspire the trophy recipients to even greater deeds in 2020/21. And, just as hopefully, inspire others to emulate those winners with their own outstanding performances.

Prizegiving and Opening Day, October 1954 – the Gutry Trophy being awarded by Parnell’s President Jack Forsman Venue was Thos. Bloodworth Park (and Councilor Tom Bloodworth would have been present). Anyone recognisable in the crowd? Terry Jarvis and were members and your Editor had just joined the Club.

Update 189 - Quiz – Answers

It is some while since we have had a quiz but some questions came to mind during lockdown.

QUESTION 1. is the ultimate challenge to cricketers and, for most batsmen, their reputation is made or broken by their performances in their first 10 Test . The following are the first 10 innings of some of the greatest batsmen – from Australia, England, India and NZ. Task is to match these names to the performances below (not outs in red) A- L: ANSWERS: A. B. C. D. Stewie Dempster E. Bert Sutcliffe F. G. Kane Wilkinson H. Marnus Labuschange I. J. K. L.

Well done Alan Graham for answering all the above correctly

COMMENT: Neil Harvey his 1st 10 innings were over a 2 year period in 3 Series – Jan. 1948, starting vs India, 3rd & 4th Tests vs England in UK, then in Sth Africa 1949/50. In 79 Tests over 15 years he scored 6149 at 48.41.

Herbert Sutcliffe his 10 were in just 6 months. Despite his remarkable batting in the 1924/25 Ashes (Sutcliffes 11th & 12th innings were 59 & 143) & England lost the series 1-4! He played 54 Tests 4555 at 60.73.

Don Bradman All 10 vs England – 18 & 1 in his 1st Test, he was dropped but returned for the 3th Test. Rest is history, Bradman scored 254 in his 11th innings the 1 and 334. He retired 18 years later averaging 99.94

Stewie Dempster New Zealander – he played only 10 Tests in just 3 years, 1930 -33 before heading to England and an outstanding County career with Leicestershire.

Bert Sutcliffe Perhaps NZ’s (and certainly Parnell’s) greatest batsman. In the game immediately prior to his 1st Test in 1947, Sutcliffe hit 197 and 128 for Otago vs MCC (ie England). Note he scored slightly more runs than Bradman in his first 10 innings. English sports journalist Vivian Jenkins wrote “We’ve heard a lot about Neil Harvey and as the best left handers in the world. In my opinion Sutcliffe has them both toiling in their wake”. NZ played so few Tests in those days – it took him till 1951, 4 years, to play his first 10th innings. Bert retired in 1959 but was recalled in 1965 to bolster NZ’s team to India and England and hit a monumental 151* in his first comeback innings in . In all, Bert’s Test career spanned 28 years, 42 Tests, 2727 runs at 40.10 with 230* his highest of 5 centuries. For Parnell, 1939/40-48/49, Bert scored 2678 runs at 60.80 - 8 centuries, highest 179*.

These are intriguing figures – just think how fortunate Steve Smith, Virat Kohli were that their selectors had faith in them despite their dismal efforts in their first 10 Test innings! The 5 commented on above scored far better than other all time greats such as Hobbs, Hammond, Sobers and Tendulkar. Of other New Zealanders, Tom Latham averaged 44 (same as Joe Root) and Giff Vivian another Parnell man, 42. One sad point, Barry Richards only had 7 Test inning but scored 508 runs at 72.57 but one conclusion is that Bert Sutcliffe and Stewie Dempster, Latham and Vivian, too, were right up with the very greats.

QUESTION 2. – former Australian batsman and captain. The article is from a book “200 Seasons of Australian Cricket” sponsored by Ansett Australia and published in 1997, and it contains an error. WHAT IS THAT ERROR?

CONGRATULATIONS TO TOM BASSETT and ALAN GRAHAM – YES, LINDSAY HASSETT WAS A RIGHT HAND BAT

LINDSAY HASSETT AUSTRALIA FULL NAME ARTHUR LINDSAY HASSETT Born August 28, 1913, , Died June 16, 1993, Batehaven, Bateman's Bay, (aged 79 years 292 days) Major teams Australia, Victoria Batting style Right-hand bat
