2 /11 2 /11 1.9 North Korea is accused of robbing children of their childhood (1.02/5) Shocking footage has been revealed of young children appearing to have been forced to work on railway lines in North Korea. It is understood children are taken out of school and can spend up to 10 hours per day hammering away at metal rails. And it has also been claimed some of the them are as young as five, raising more questions about human rights abuses in the country. The footage, obtained by the Daily Mirror, was allegedly recorded using hidden cameras by undercover informers over the past year. Children are seen working on railway construction near Rimpo Station in the Chagang Province in the north of the country. Michael Glendinning, who works for humanitarian organisation the European Alliance of Human Rights in North Korea, told the Mirror the footage was ‘startling’ and described child labour as one of the ‘worst abuses the North Korean state inflicts’. He added: ‘Millions of North Korean children are forced to work in back-breaking roles that rob them of the chance of a happy childhood. “The impact of the work on their physical development, their physical and mental health, and on their education can’t be understated.’ Mr Glendinning said the psychological harm the ‘labour’ would cause to the children was just as terrible as the physical damage it could do. But in another section of the footage, children at elite schools are seen smiling and taking part in exercises set to music, while parents watch from the school gates. According to the Global Slavery Index 2016, around 1.1million North Koreans are currently involved in forced labour, almost five per cent of the 25million population. The country is led by dictator Kim Jong-un, who allegedly recently ordered military chiefs to stay up all night writing apologies for their failures after getting drunk at his holiday villa. The communist dictator is said to have got boozed up in September when he ordered elderly soldiers to put pen to paper detailing their weaknesses or an apology. A source said Kim raged at the military officials and told them to stay up all night to write up their statements, but appeared confused as to why they were there when he woke up the next morning. Meanwhile fears are growing in the international community after a senior US military official warned North Korea was capable of launching nuclear weapons - although could not confirm whether they could hit a target. The secretive state can mount a nuclear warhead on a missile, the official stated, but may not be able to get the weapon back through the atmosphere without it burning up. The unnamed official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Pyongyang is trying to overcome this limitation, and branded leader Kim Jong-un's behaviour branded 'very, very provocative'.

3 /11 1.7 South Korea's powerful business lobby group dealt big blow by Park scandal (1.02/5) By Christine Kim SEOUL, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Long the voice of the conglomerates that form the engine of South Korea's economy, the Federation of Korean Industries could become another casualty of the scandal that is poised to cost President Park Geun-hye her job, as key members flee. The FKI, whose board is made up of the chiefs of the country's conglomerates, or chaebol, has been the nexus for close ties between government and big business. It formed the two non-profit foundations, Mir and K- Sports, backing Park initiatives that are central to the current political crisis. Prosecutors have charged Park's friend Choi Soon-sil with colluding with the president into pressuring conglomerates such as the Samsung Group to pay funds to the foundations. Last week, Jay Y. Lee, scion of the Samsung Group, the FKI's largest member, said it will leave the group, prompting others including the LG Group, SK Group and state-run banks including the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) and Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) to follow suit, raising questions over whether the group can survive in its current form. "We're leaving because abandoning the FKI won't change anything for us," an IBK official said, declining to be identified because the matter is sensitive. An FKI official declined to comment on its future plans. It has said it will devise plans for reform by the end of February. In recent years, some members complain, the FKI was being used by the government to pressure businesses - and not the other way around, fueling resentment. Hiring paid lobbyists is illegal in South Korea. "The FKI's role was to be a voice for companies as Samsung or LG can't speak for all conglomerates," said another source whose company is also preparing to leave the FKI. "The members are leaving because they feel the FKI was being used by the government to demand concessions from businesses. " FKI Vice Chairman Lee Seung-cheol told a parliamentary hearing last week that the presidential Blue House had played an unusually pushy role in managing the two foundations. "It was difficult to turn down the Blue House's orders and requests," he said. "What was different about the Mir and K-Sports foundations from other foundations the FKI established was the fact that the Blue House became involved in detail. " POWER THROUGH GENERATIONS The FKI has more than 600 members, mostly large businesses, including government-backed companies. As of the end of 2014, it reported 360 billion won ($305 million) in assets and 349 billion won in liabilities. Its funding mainly comes from member dues. The FKI was founded in 1961, just after Park Chung- hee seized power in a coup that led to 18 years of his rule until he was assassinated in 1979. Park was the father of the current President Park, who was impeached last week by parliament, a decision that will now be upheld or rejected by a constitutional court in a process that could take up to 180 days. Jay Y. Lee's grandfather, Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull, was FKI's first chairman. In those early days of the country's industrialisation, the FKI was a voice to funnel corporate opinions to the military government. FKI has over the years become entangled in various scandals involving the chaebol and government, sowing public disdain for the group, although none of its employees have ever been convicted of wrongdoing. FKI's power ebbed in the early 2000s as liberal presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun focused on chaebol reform, but the group regained some traction during the 2008-2013 presidency of Lee Myung- bak, and then under Park, both conservatives. In a survey conducted early this month, the newspaper Naeil and a polling firm found 68.7 percent of 1,000 respondents said the FKI should disband, although that would require approval of 75 percent of its members. Lee Un-ju, a senior member of parliament from the opposition Democratic Party, has drafted a resolution calling for the FKI to disband without seeking a vote from members. That resolution has widespread backing in her party. GOOD RIDDANCE? Samsung Group declined to say how it would communicate with the government after it leaves FKI. "I don't think we're at the stage of talking about that yet," a Samsung spokeswoman said. The chaebol have plenty of ways to get the government's ear without help from the FKI. From modest roots, South Korean conglomerates now play a dominant role in the economy and have been critical in making the country the world's sixth-biggest exporter. "FKI was once a community where businesses could go," the IBK official said. "Now it's meaningless and we have plenty of communication channels with the government even without it. " In the absence of FKI, the broader Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with some 160,000 members, will play a bigger role, says Yang Jun-seok, economics professor at Catholic University, while companies will step up bilateral meetings to communicate with officials. "The end result will no doubt be positive," Yang said, by removing a forum that had concentrated the power of the chaebol, although he warned it could engender the sort of secretive meetings that came in for criticism during the current scandal. Samsung's Lee told parliament that he had met with Park alone in July 2015 and again last February in previously undisclosed meetings at a house near the Blue House, where they discussed issues including an ongoing government project and investment in South Korea. The location raised eyebrows as it conjured up memories of the "safe houses" that were created around the Blue House in the 1970s and used by the country's military leaders as private places for entertainment and meetings, including some with business leaders. The ruthless North Korean dictator overindulged on spirits this September when he ordered several top military vets to write apology and self- criticism letters, according to a Japanese media report.

“That none of you were able to produce not even one military satellite is a misconduct that is commensurate to treason,” the sauced despot allegedly told his country’s top military brass during an all-night reprimand.

But the next morning, the tyrant was no longer inebriated and asked why the elderly officials were at his villa, apparently having no memory of his tanked-up tirade, UPI reported.

6 /11 1.9 Song Joong-ki Says His Phoenix-Like Character Led Him Back To Song Hye-kyo; ‘Descendants Of The Sun’ To Win More KBS Drama Awards In an interview with Stoo Asiae , a Korean news portal, Song Joong-ki said that his role was like that of a phoenix, a legendary bird that’s believed to have magical powers.

According to Greek mythology, phoenix is a magical bird that symbolizes renewal and resurrection. The bird has an interesting death process. It dies by bursting into flames, and is then reborn from the ashes to begin a new life.

Similarly, on the personal front, Song Joong-ki’s relationship with Song Hye-kyo, who play Dr Kang Mo-yeon, hits a rough patch. It was love at first sight for both Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo. The couple, however, break up due to their differences. In the end, they realize that they are meant for each other and reunite.

“When I read the script for the first time, I found I could read it as fast as if it were a comic book. That’s when I realized it would be a fun drama that many people would fall in love with. The relationship between a doctor and a soldier intrigued me,” said Song Hye-kyo, who is now a role model among young Asian women.

Surprisingly, the drama lacked the romance element. The script was later beefed up to include intense love scenes, which enthralled the audience. It was this initiative that created the most ideal on-screen couple in Descendants of the Sun.

The truth of the matter is that Song Hye-kyo did influence Song Joong-ki off screen. She was a source of inspiration to him.

“I think Song Hye-kyo influenced me the most, as she spent most of her time with me during the filming. She was always considerate of everyone around her and her behavior is a living proof of why she is such a great star. Actually, she filmed all the difficult scenes when I was in bed due to the injury. She was under a lot of pressure, but she volunteered to do it,” said Song Joong-ki.

8 /11 3.6 NHL roundup: Decision looms on Olympic role The NHL seems set up to enjoy hockey without labor-related headaches for at least two-plus seasons. That doesn’t mean it’s a drama-free league.

A decision must be made soon about whether the world’s best hockey players will be at the Olympics in South Korea in 14 months. And there are financial issues bubbling up among the players, particularly when it comes to escrow and how they believe it has become a heavy tax on their salaries.

The collective bargaining agreement and the Olympics were tied together recently by the NHL itself. The league made an offer, asking if the Players’ Association would eliminate its opt-out option in 2019 and extend the labor pact three years through the 2024-2025 season in exchange for participating in a sixth consecutive Olympics.

The union rejected the idea. The NHL, which has been stunted by three lockouts since 1993, provided a public spin on why it would have been good for the game.

“Most importantly, it tells the world and our fans there’s nine years of labor peace after this season which we thought would be a good thing even if there were things that we might want to change,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at last week’s board of governors meeting.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr said the league didn’t make a formal proposal, but floated it as an option.

“We took it seriously and ran it by the players and it’s not something players are interested in at the moment,” Fehr said. “Hopefully we will continue to try to resolve our issues, including the Olympics.”

The Olympic-related problems revolve around travel expenses and insurance because the International Olympic Committee does not plan to pay those bills, as it has to get NHL players to the Winter Olympics since 1998. The IOC spent about $14 million to cover travel and insurance for NHL players for the 2014 Olympics in Russia. Even if interested parties come up with enough money for travel and insurance, there’s no guarantee the league and union will agree to participate in the next Olympics in part because, according to Bettman, owners have a “negative sentiment ” about it at this point.

Bettman has said a decision would need to be made by early January at the latest, giving the league time to create a schedule for next season with or without a two-plus week break for the Olympics.

Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns and Chris Tierney scored in regulation for San Jose, and Martin Jones made 29 saves.

Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Dion Phaneuf scored for the Senators, and Mike Condon stopped 26 shots.

9 /11 2.4 Tensions brew as Japanese community says Korean sex slave statue on display in Sydney church 'promotes animosity' A statue of a sex slave displayed in a Sydney church has sparked racial outrage. The Australia- Japan community has lodged a complaint against the Uniting Church using the Racial Discrimination Act's Section 18C. The community claims the statue in the Ashfield church 'creates racial divisions' and has 'offended and insulted many Japanese expats'. Scroll down for video The statue is of 'Comfort Women', and commemorates Korean and Chinese women forced into sexual slavery by military of the imperial Japanese government during the Second World War. Australia-Japan Community Network president Tetsuhide Yamaoka told ABC's 7.30 the community felt like it had been intimidated and targeted. 'The comfort women statues being erected all over the world have never been a peaceful monument or commemoration or honouring women,' Mr Yamaoka said. 'We have a numerous number of reasons to believe this statue has been promoted as a political tool, causing unnecessary animosity and division to local communities.' Mr Yamaoka said the statue should be kept somewhere private and discreet 'so that people who are interested can visit but still we can minimise the risk of causing unnecessary harm to the local community'. Section 18C of the Act states it is unlawful to 'offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate' a person on the basis of 'race, colour, or national or ethnic origin'. The complaint lodged by the Australia-Japan community has described the statue as a 'hurtful historic symbol' and said it is 'detrimental to the local community and will only result in generating offence and racial hate'. The network claims to have explained its position to Ashfield Uniting Church Reverend Bill Crews, who agreed to host the statue at the church for the past six months. 'However, so far our concerns have been flatly ignored. Hence we are forced to take a more formal action.' Reverend Crews said that despite the complaint he wouldn't be removing the statue. 'I just find it outrageous ... bring it on,' he told ABC TV. Liberal MP and former human rights commissioner Tim Wilson said the fresh complaint under section 18C shows why that law needed to change.

10 /11 2.9 North Korea crew members found on boat adrift at sea, report says SEOUL, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- South Korean naval vessels rescued eight North Korean nationals adrift at sea but all crew members said they wished to be repatriated to the North. A Seoul government source told Yonhap the men were found on three separate ships that were lost at sea for at least two months.

One of the boats contained the body of one crew member who had died of starvation, according to the report.

The boats were discovered on Dec. 11 and 12 off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula, when they had floated into South Korea's exclusive economic zone. "All eight crew members found on the three boats expressed their intention to return to North Korea," Yonhap's source said. "We are looking for ways to contact the North to return the sailors. "

But reaching out to North Korea may pose challenges for Seoul.

Pyongyang terminated an inter-Korea communication channel at the truce village of Panmunjom previously used by the military.

The line was cut after the suspension of operations in February at the jointly operated factory park in Kaesong.

North Korean ships that usually drift into South Korean territorial waters are often handed over to the North from the Northern Limit Line, on the western coast.

Badly damaged North Korean boats are also restored prior to repatriation, but Yonhap's source said one of the three boats was beyond repair.

In August three North Koreans promptly sought asylum after being found at sea by South Korean coast guards.

11 /11 1.8 Which dog breed do Californians Google more than any other state? It’s not Pomeranian, Shiba Inu or Daschund—the dog that Californians apparently search for in Google more than any other state is the Korean Jindo.

Real estate company Estately released this report after running hundreds of dog breeds through Google Trends. Its final list does not represent what breed each state Googles the most, but instead shows the dog breeds each state Googles more frequently than the rest of the country.

The Korean Jindo is an unusual pick, as they’re not known for being easy dogs to manage (perhaps justifying why they’re Googled so often). An old South Korean breed, the Jindo are known for their stellar guard dog abilities, intelligence and high energy.

Other fun discoveries from the data analysis: American Bulldogs are googled by Floridians more than any other state, Arizona seems to have an interest in Mexican Hairless Dogs, and Texas has a penchant for Teddy Roosevelt Terriers.
