Its architect was the famous Domenico Trezzini, who made a significant contribution to the beginning of the building and urban design of St. Petersburg. Despite being a fortress it is noteworthy that Peter and Paul fortress did not take part in hostilities during the entire history of its existence. It was used mainly as a political prison and some of the Decembrists as well as famous people such as Dostoevsky, Chernyshevsky and others were imprisoned here in different periods of time. Nowadays it is a house for different museums such as Peter and Paul Cathedral – the tallest building in the city center and the burial place of Russian emperors – the Grand Ducan Mausoleum and the Museum of History of Saint-Petersburg.
