John Carroll, consecrated as the nation’s first Catholic Ibishop in 1790, had commissioned Capitol architect Benjamin Latrobe and worked with him on the building’s design. They planned a neoclassi- cal brick facade and an interior with the cruciform shape, nave, narthex, and chorus of a European cathedral. -

Hinkson, Ph.D. ABSTRACT “The ideals and principles that have characterized Jesuit education for over 450 years are central to Georgetown’s mission and character…Students are challenged to engage in the world and become men and women in the service of others, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community.” This definition of Georgetown’s identity on the university’s website depicts Georgetown students’ call to service as a result of the Jesuit tradition of the university. Through exploring the question, “How did Georgetown’s involvement in the education of low-income children in Washington, DC change between 1819, with the construction of free schools run by the Visitation monastery and the Holy Trinity Parish, and 1964, with the establishment of the Georgetown University Community Action Program?” this thesis examines how the Jesuit tradition contributed to the University’s involvement in service work in the local Washington community. In this thesis I argue that the piece of Georgetown’s modern identity which encourages student engagement in the service of others finds its roots not primarily in the Jesuit tradition of the university but rather in student involvement in the social movements of the 1960s. -

THE MARYLAND MISSION The history of the Jesuit Mission of Maryland begins with the name of Father Andrew White, who, with his fellow-Jesuits, Father John Altham and Thomas Gervase, a coadjutor-brother, was among the passengers that disembarked from the Ark at St. Clement's Island, Maryland, March 25, 1634. The "Apostle of Maryland," as Father White has come to be known, labored strenuously through fourteen years on behalf of the white and Indian population of the colony, leav ing behind him on his forced return to England an example of mis sionary zeal which his Jesuit successors sought to follow lor a century and more down to the painful period of the Suppression As a conse quence of that event the former Jesuit priests of the Maryland Mission organized themselves into a legal body known as the "Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergymen" for the purpose of holding by due legal tenure the property belonging to the Society of Jesus in Maryland and of restoring it to the Society in case the latter should be canonically reestablished x During the entire period of the Suppression the Jesuits maintained a canonical existence in Russia When in 1803 Bishop John Carroll of Baltimore and his coadjutor, Bishop Leonard Neale, both former Jesuits themselves, petitioned the Father General, Gabriel Gruber, to affiliate the Maryland ex-Jesuits to the Society as existing in Russia, the latter in a communication from St. Petersburg authorized Bishop Carroll to prepare the way for a Jesuit mission in Maryland by appointing a superior. -

CHAPTER 7 hg GOD’S BLESSED TIME The zeal which impressed her new Catholic friends was to cause a serious break in Mrs. Seton’s relations with her older non-Catholic connections in the summer of 1806. It has been said that Elizabeth Seton was very fortunate in the number of men of exceptional virtue who crossed her path. If in proportionate degrees these men benefited from her friendship, how much more impressive is the evidence of Mrs. Seton’s influence on women. Her encouragement to Rebecca Seton has already been noted. After her conversion, Mrs. Seton had an even greater influence on Cecilia Seton, Rebecca’s youngest sister and Elizabeth’s sister-in-law. Cecilia, together with her sister Harriet, and her cousin, Eliza Farquhar, had been tremendously aroused by the fervor of Elizabeth’s formal inquiry on the Catholic faith. While Harriet, and “Zide’s”a first enthusiasm cooled under parental frowns, Cecilia’s only grew stronger. The girl became obstinate at James Seton’s house where she lived, and many notes passed between her and the “sis” she adored. Elizabeth advised patience and told Cecilia to let the Lord be her first confidant in regard to the “secret” they shared. She must yield to those who had authority over her. “Of course you are a prisoner,” she wrote, “but it is a Prisoner of the Lord.”1 As the girl’s yearning to become a Catholic increased, her health grew worse. When Elizabeth began to fear that Cecilia might die outside the Church, she wrote to Father Cheverus in Boston, asking his advice. -

Journal of Jesuit Studies 8 (2021) 56-80 Catholic Slaveowners and the Development of Georgetown University’s Slave Hiring System, 1792–1862 Elsa Barraza Mendoza Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA [email protected] Abstract This article examines the place of enslaved laborers in the founding and operations of Georgetown University. It draws evidence from the school’s administrative and financial records; the archives of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus; and manuscript collections in Maryland and Washington, DC. The school generally rented rather than bought and owned enslaved people to work on campus. The school used its position as a provider of education and religious services to obtain enslaved laborers from two types of Catholic slaveowners: priests and parents—women in particular— who sent their children to Georgetown. Enslaved laborers worked at the school from its earliest days until the abolition of slavery in Washington, DC, in 1862. Indeed, the school’s last enslaved worker, Aaron Edmonson, left campus in March of 1862, only a month before the passage of the Compensated Emancipation Act of the District of Columbia.
