Eine attraktive Eigenschaft beispielsweise von Rust ist das gegenüber C und C++ deutlich strengere Speicherverwaltungsmodell, bei dem bereits zur Kompilierzeit der Lebenszyklus und die Erreichbarkeit von Objekten sowie die Zuständigkeit für deren Allokation und Deallokation wohldefiniert sind. Ganze Klassen von Programmfehlern wie etwa Buffer Overflows oder Dereferenzierung ungültige Zeiger werden dadurch eliminiert und die Programme mithin sicherer und robuster. Aus diversen Gründen müssen Programme, die in sicheren Sprachen geschriebenen wurden, aber oftmals auf “unsicheren“ Legacy-Code zurückgreifen. November 8, 2019 The Honorable Alex Azar Secretary Department of Health and Human Services Washington, DC Dear Secretary Azar: We write to you as parents, grandparents and educators to support the President's call to "clear the markets" of all flavored e-cigarettes. Safeguarding the health of our nation's children is paramount to us. Children must be protected from becoming addicted to nicotine and the dangers posed by tobacco product. We ask for your leadership in ensuring that all flavored e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol, are removed from the marketplace. The dramatic increase in the number of youth vaping is staggering and we see it in our communities every day. Every high school in the nation is dealing with this epidemic. From 2017 to 2019, there was a 135 percent increase, and now one out of every four high school youth (27.5%) in America use these products. More than 6 out of 10 of these teens use fruit, menthol or mint- flavored e-cigarettes. The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine concluded there is "substantial evidence" that if a youth or young adult uses an e-cigarette, they are at increased risk of using traditional cigarettes. Flavors in tobacco products attract kids. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the candy and fruit flavors found in e-cigarettes are one of the primary reason’s kids use them. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 81 percent of youth who have ever used tobacco products initiated with a flavored product. -

Introductory Remarks | James Carroll Zoom Discussion | Today’s American Catholic | April 8, 2021 We are honored to have with us this evening the acclaimed author, historian, and journalist James Carroll. James is the author of twelve novels, most recently The Cloister, which the New York Times called “incandescent,” and eight works of nonfiction, most recently Christ Actually: The Son of God for the Secular Age, of which the Boston Globe said: “At once stunningly original and strangely familiar, a testament to the power of a critical, creative faith.” Other books include the National Book Award– winning memoir An American Requiem; the New York Times bestseller Constantine’s Sword, which was turned into a feature-length documentary film; House of War, which won the first PEN-John Kenneth GalBraith Award; and Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which was named a 2011 Best Book by Publishers Weekly. His Books that have dealt explicitly with church reform include Toward a New Catholic Church: The Promise of Reform in 2002 and Practicing Catholic in 2009. In 2012, DouBleday puBlished Vatican II: The Essential Documents, translated by Norman Tanner, with introductions from James Carroll and Pope Benedict the Sixteenth. In addition to his novels and nonfiction work, James has published a collection of poetry, Forbidden Disappointments, and his plays have been produced at the Berkshire Theater Festival and at Boston’s Next Move Theater. His essays and articles have appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic, the Daily Beast, and other publications. His op-ed page column ran regularly in the Boston Globe from 1992 to 2015. James has been a Shorenstein Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Values in PuBlic Life at the Harvard Divinity School; the Richman Visiting Professor at Brandeis University; and the holder of the McDonald Chair at Emory University, in addition to numerous other academic honors and appointments. -

7 Drifting Apart Numerous attempts have been made, most of them unconvincing, to explain how and why, in the late 1930s, a rift developed between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Jim Farley. Somehow, by 1940, Farley had become so profoundly disenchanted with the Roosevelt administration that he felt compelled to stand against his former boss to contest the 1940 Demo- cratic presidential nomination. It was an extraordinary turn of events that brought an end to one of the most successful political combinations in American history.1 Roosevelt had always maintained a large and changing pool of policy- makers, speechwriters, and political aides, but Farley was part of the elite group that had been an evergreen presence in Roosevelt’s inner circle since the 1928 gubernatorial campaign in New York State. Though their backgrounds were very different—Farley the Irish American and Catholic who, from the age of ten, was raised in a single-parent house- hold; Roosevelt the Dutch Episcopalian born into a life of wealth and privilege on a Hyde Park estate—but their shared interest in the politics of upstate New York and enthusiasm for the Democratic Party brought them together. Theirs was a formidable and famous partnership, one that allowed both men to achieve positions of enormous power and in›uence, express their considerable political talents, and make a lasting contribution to the politics of the United States. So, what went wrong? Previous accounts of the Farley-Roosevelt split have portrayed it as a dramatic example of how con›icting personal loyalties terminated a political partnership.
