  • Miocene Continental Gastropods from the Southern Margin of the Swabian Alb (Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany)
    N. Jb. Geol. Paläont. Abh. 287/1 (2018), 17–44 Article E Stuttgart, January 2018 Miocene continental gastropods from the southern margin of the Swabian Alb (Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany) Olaf Höltke, Rodrigo B. Salvador, and Michael W. Rasser With 6 figures Abstract: The Middle Miocene silvana-beds outcropping at the southern margin of the Swabian Alb bear a wide array of terrestrial and freshwater gastropods. Especially in the surroundings of the Emerberg and Tautschbuch hills, there are records of several collection sites. In the present work, we investigated material from the historical localities from these two regions, housed in museum collec- tions, in order to provide an updated check list, synthesizing the knowledge of the region in the hopes to spur renewed interest. In total, we report 14 freshwater and 50 land snail species from the area, but not all species reported in the literature could be confirmed. LES NOMS SCIENTIFIQUES FRANÇAIS DES MOLLUSQUES CONTINENTAUX DE FRANCE : processus d’ÉtABLISSEMENT d’une LISTE DE RÉFÉRENCE Benoît FONTAINE 1, Jean-Michel BICHAIN 2, Xavier CUCHERAT 3, Olivier GAR G OMINY 4 & Vincent PRIÉ 5 SUMMARY. — French scientific names of continental molluscs of France: process for establishing a list of reference. — In the biodiversity crisis context and with the increasing general awareness on this issue, conservation of small and poorly-known species is hampered by the fact they only have latine names. In order to communicate for biodiversity conservation, having French names is an advantage which is lacking in terrestrial and freshwater molluscs from France. To remedy this problem, we propose a list of French scientific names for this group, i.e. all species and subspecies known from France. We have listed existing names in legal documents, in usage and in the 18th and 19th centuries scientific literature. The resulting list being incomplete, we had to create new French names, following a series of recommendations adapted from similar works dealing with other taxonomic groups. We conclude by dealing with the issue of the legitimacy and validity of such names. The list of French scientific names is given as an appendix and is downloadable from internet.

KRAMARENKO Mykolaiv National Agrarian University, Paryzka Komuna St. 9, Mykolaiv, 54020, Ukraine (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Mechanisms which govern patterns of intra-specific vatiation in land snails were traced within areas of different size, using Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke), Chondrula tridens (O. F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. At macro-geographical scale more or less distinct clinal patterns are associated with basic macroclimatic

  • Modern Taxonomic and Biogeographic Approaches to Biodi - Versity in the Mediterranean Area
Biodiversity Journal , 2017, 8 (1): 49–58 MONOGRAPH Modern taxonomic and biogeographic approaches to biodi - versity in the Mediterranean area Alessandro Minelli Department of Biology, University of Padova, Via Ugo Bassi 58 B, I 35131 Padova, Italy; email: [email protected] ABSTRACT I review here examples of recent progress in the taxonomy and biogeography of Mediter- ranean taxa. Morphological approaches have still much to offer, as shown by a study of the Sicilian species of the wingless weevil genus Pseudomeira Stierlin, 1881 (Coleoptera Curculionidae). A systematic analysis of molecular markers, however, is revealing a huge number of previously unsuspected cryptic species, as in the scarab genus Pachypus Dejean, 1821 (Coleoptera Pachypodidae). Other molecular studies have revealed very deep phylo - geographic structure in the Corsican brook salamander; the presence of six or more species hitherto lumped under Rumina decollata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pulmonata Subulinidae), in a snail genus in which biparental and uniparental reproduction coexist; the conservation of the same male pheromone in vicariant species of the scarab beetles of the genus Osmoderma Lepeletier et Serville, 1828 (Coleoptera Cetoniidae); the interplay of vicariance and dispersal events in giving rise to the different taxa of the land snail genus Chilostoma Fitzinger, 1833 (Gastropoda Helicidae) inhabiting the Greek islands. Further examples of modern biogeographic studies are a morphometric analysis revealing the preferential localization of steep slopes of phenetic diversity of seven butterfly species groups in the Tuscan archipelago and across the Strait of Messina; a research on tenebrionid beetles showing that present distribution patterns are not completely explained by postglacial recolonization from Pleistocenic refugia; a comparative analysis of the diversity of patterns (explained in part by vicariance, in part by dispersal) in the biota on the two shores of the Strait of Gibraltar.
