PRISONER PEAR Icon of the MASSENEZ Brand, ‘‘Prisoner Pear’’ Captivates with Its Olfactory and Gustative Qualities and the Pear-Shaped Bottle with a Whole Pear Inside MASSENEZ STORY Founded in 1870 in Alsace, Distillerie G.E. Massenez remains today one of the last family-owned firms dedicated to the production of traditional, top-quality eaux-de-vie (fruit brandies) and liquors. It is in fact this dedication to the ‘‘dis- tillerie artisanale’’ which led Eugène Massenez to develop a formula for raspberry eau-de-vie and make it com- mercially available to an appreciate public worldwide. The distillation method is still a closely guarded family secret. Born in a family of distillers from father to son, G.E. Massenez with his exceptional savoir-faire continues with success the traditional art of distilling eaux de vie (fruit brandies) which is still particularly alive in the Villé region on Alsace in France. The distillation of high quality eaux-de-vie is not consistent with industrialization; thus Massenez has chosen to retain traditional methods. Only the best fruits are selected and stored in large fermentation vats prior to distillation. Following a careful and patient maturation over several years, the bottling is carried out. Uncompromising on quality, Massenez is today universally acclaimed for eaux-de-vie, such as wild Raspberry and Williams Pear, as well as for creams and liquors : Peach, Blackcurrant, etc. Massenez has won many awards at international exhibitions, including the world oscar for quality in 1980. These wonderful products are sold through the world, as 70% of the production is exported. CREAMS G.E Massenez has developed high quality creams, concentrating fruits, sugar and eau-de-vie. Their rich aroma makes them very versatile and they can be enjoyed neat, over ice, in cocktails or poured on ice creams, pastries, etc. All are ideally suited to prepare the traditional French apéritif ‘‘Kir’’ with white wine or champagne. EAUX-DE-VIE Fruit is the single raw material of French eaux-de-vie and its selection determines quality. The aroma, flavour and delicacy of great eaux-de-vie depend heavily on the fruit and the distiller’s know-how is of utmost importance at this stage in order to select the best fruit. Fruit with stones or pips are placed in tanks for fermentation while berries must macerate in alcohol. PRISONER PEAR Icon of the MASSENEZ Brand, ‘‘Prisoner Pear’’ captivates with its olfactory and gustative qualities and the pear-shaped bottle with a whole pear inside. The bottle is simply attached to the pear tree in flower…so the fruit develops inside the bottle. When it ripens, the fruit and the bottle are carefully detached. Massenez’s Liquor de Pomme Verte obtained the Silver Medal at the Selection Mondiale des Spritueux Canada 2014 ! MASSENEZ EAUX-DE-VIE G.E. Massenez uses only selected, ripe, hand-picked fruits. Massenez Eaux-de-Vie are double distilled, thus inten- sifying the fruit character, the ‘‘heart’’, in the resulting distillate. Approximately 30 pounds of fruits are required to produce one bottle of eau-de-vie. The final product is an impeccably clean, perfectly clear eighty-proof brandy, with a magnificient bouquet and intense taste of fruit. Poire Williams (Pear Williams Eau-de-Vie) Incredibly refined, concentrated and balanced. The intense nose is an indication of the quality of the selection of the original fruits and delicate distillation. Very fruity, long lasting and truly inviting bouquet. Massenez’s Williams Pear Eau-de-Vie ob- tained the Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial des Spiritueux in Canada in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Very complex bouquet with primary aromas of fresh fruits mixing with secondary and tertiary aromas of fermentation and distillation. Framboise Sauvage (Raspberry Eau-de-Vie) Remarkable by its delicacy, refinement and balance. It is a subtle emotion that mirrors the fragility of Raspberry. Massenez’s Framboise Sauvage obtained the Gold Medal at Sélection Mondiale des Spiritueux Canada 2014 and the Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial Bruxelles 2014. Marc d’Alsace Gewürztraminer Eau-de-Vie (Grappa) One of the only French brandies of controlled appellation. Powerful flavors, much of density and a very developed aroma, which very subjectivity expresses fruity noble grain of Gewürztraminer. Mirabelle (Yellow Plum Eau-de-Vie) Remarkable character, concentration and balance, 3 major organoleptic notes : Very subtle floral note of white flowers. Intense fruity note, initially of fresh fruit overlaid by ripe fruit, marmalade and jam. Very prominent spicy aftertaste underspinning the organoleptic profile. Vieux Calvados (Apple Eau-de-Vie) A golden color implying aromas of apple-cinnamon, cloves, pie crust, caramel and even hints of yellow pear. Dry with a subtle, elegant apple-cinnamon replay. Chill it slightly and serve it as a digestif, or enjoy it with fresh cinnamon scones or baked apples. www.DreyfusAshby.com Massenez Garden Party Garden Party is a range of single-flavored liqueurs capturing the essence of fresh herbs or vegetables. Located in the Tarn departement of France - a 3hr drive south east from Bordeaux and about 70km north east from Toulouse - his tiny distillery produces what might very well be the most magnificent expressions of fruits liquor/sweet-wine and eau-de-vie. The man farms biodynamically 20 hectares (ha) divided as such: 3 hectares of vine dedicated to growing endemic grape variety: - 1.8 ha of Mauzac Rose - 0.5 ha of Prunelart - 0.7 ha of Folle Noire 2.5 ha of fruit trees: - 0.7 ha of Greengage - 1.3 ha of Pear trees - 0.5 ha of a field blend of fruit trees such as sour cherry trees, quince trees etc... 1.5 ha of truffle grove (and depending on the year, 5 ha of sunflowers and 4 ha of other cereals. The rest of the land is made of woods) The adventure started in 1967 when Laurent’s father started his one-man traveling distiller operation: while his dad had been growing some fruit trees for the family’s consumption, he made a living going from one village to the other, distilling the fruits small growers and families would have harvested from their garden.

  • Brandy Bible Second Edition
BRANDY BIBLE SECOND EDITION “Derived from the Dutch Brandewijn” - “burnt wine” Brandy, a quick introduction… Legend has it that brandy was first produced when an enterprising sea captain distilled wine in order to save space on his ship. He planned to reconstitute it with water when he arrived at his home port, but those who sampled the new concoction liked it just the way it was. Today, most brandy is distilled from white wine, though red wine and other fermented fruit juices are also used. It’s then aged in oak barrels for several years. Brandy is often served as an after-dinner drink, or added to coffee. There are two highly regarded French brandies: Cognac and the slightly drier Armagnac. California also produces many fine brandies that are similar to cognac. Metaxa is a strong Greek brandy that tastes of resin. Spanish brandy is based on sherry, and is heavier and sweeter than French brandy. Fruit Brandies such as Apple brandy is distilled from apple cider, while pear brandy is made from pear cider. Fruit brandies are distilled from the fruit itself, instead of fruit juices. Then there are Pomace brandies such as the Italian Grappa. This potent and somewhat harsh drink is made from the grape residue, called pomace, that’s left over from making wine. It’s traditionally been thought of as a second-rate ‘eau de vie’, but some producers have developed premium Grappas that are quite smooth and very pricey. “Here at the Three Greyhounds Inn we aim to stock an excellent selection of Brandies across the three types from classic Grape Brandy such as Cognacs and Armagnacs to fruit brandies such as English Cider Apple Brandies from the farm as well as other interesting fruit brandies.

  • A Portuguese Tradition – Distillation of Eau-De-Vie Using a 150 Year Old Copper Alembic Still
A Portuguese Tradition – Distillation of Eau-de-vie using a 150 year old copper Alembic Still. Modern civilization has brought us many conveniences and in a world where time is money we are always trying to find a quick and easy solution to our problems and to meet our needs with the least amount of hassle. So in fact life is easier and more relaxed than it used to be. But is it really? Or have we lost a certain quality due to the pressures and stresses of our daily lives and quality in the things we consume, as they are all now either canned or bottled with added preservatives. People are slowly realizing that the old fashion way of doing things is in fact much better and they are rediscovering traditions that were left behind which can bring us great pleasure. The following is a narrative of one of these traditions – distilling pomace or brolho (the solid matter that is left over after the juice is removed from the grapes) to produce eau-de-vie (grappa- wine brandy) with an alembic still that is at least 150 years old and a description of the techniques and equipment that was used by the older folk. You might say it is much easier just to go out and buy a bottle, but there is much more to the process than just obtaining the desired liquid, it is an experience that brings us pleasure, just like any other hobby. We also know that the final product is pure – just like baking a home-made cake or growing your own organic vegetables.
