Anniversaries are for celebrating past accomplishments by thanking those who were instrumental in supporting us along this 30-year journey that we’ve traveled together. Tonight, we remember the original collaboration in 1989 between the United Way Silicon Valley and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce who worked with a group of Latino community leaders to launch the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) to address the lack of charitable resources available for the Latino community. It is also time to remember our sponsors, individual ticket buyers, volunteers, and staff. Your continued support and engagement assist our daily work with Latino students, parents, and future leaders. This past August we launched our newest initiative, the Latinx Speaker Series. The objectives for the Speaker Series are: 1) to convene Latinos from all our community sectors; and 2) to listen to an interesting speaker address an intriguing topic of importance to our Latinx community. Our first Latinx Speaker Series guest was Francisco Ramos, Vice President, Spanish Language Originals for Netflix. Francisco shared his thoughts and was very well received by a sold-out audience of nearly 400 people. To increase the academic performance of Latinx students, we continue to expand programming at our Hispanic Foundation College Success Center. The Center has proven to be a successful model serving thousands of students and parents. We look forward to opening a second Center in San Mateo County in early 2020! Additionally, with our program partners, the Parents Institute for Quality Education and Foothill College’s Family Engagement Institute, we’ve trained over 4,000 Latino parents in our Parent Education Academies about local education processes and skills needed to guide their children towards higher academic achievement. In partnership with College Spring, we were able to increase SAT scores by 80 points for high school Latino students and gave them the confidence needed to be excellent test-takers and an opportunity to attend their preferred university. For a brighter future, we are especially pleased to have recipients of our Latinos in Technology Scholarship program in the audience. You will have the opportunity to meet them throughout the evening. Lastly, Silicon Valley Latinos have made significant contributions to the region and beyond in a wide range of areas. These contributions and accomplishments need to be chronicled for present and future generations. In 2020, we will launch the Hispanic Foundation Leadership Awards (HFLA). With the HFLA our Foundation will have the ability to recognize Latinos who have contributed to the betterment of the Latino community in Silicon Valley and beyond. Watch for more information about the Hispanic Foundation Leadership Awards and how you can nominate a leader of distinction in early 2020! With your support and engagement our foundation will continue to have a positive impact on the Latino community by increasing opportunities to reach our full potential. Please join us! These contributions and accomplishments need to be chronicled for present and future generations. Since 1990, the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) has recognized an exemplary Latino Familia that is inspirational to others, in community volunteerism and engagement. Most recently the HFSV Visionario and Pioneros award recognized leadership and philanthropic support among local supporters of the Foundation. As we turn 30, we expand the reach of these awards to have the ability to recognize extraordinary leaders in more areas. The Hispanic Foundation Leadership Awards will be a virtual space to honor in one place all the past heroes of the original La Familia, Visionario, and Pioneros award recipients, and to recognize the Latino leaders of the next generations. “ By expanding the reach of these awards, it is our hope that we can bring orgullo (pride) to the Latinx community and inspire our Familias, our youth and Silicon Valley leaders to continue creating opportunities for Latinos to excel – whether it is in education, arts, technology, leadership, innovation or community engagement,” — Raquel González, Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, Board Chair.
