Emmy® statuettes will be presented tonight for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). I’ve served as your Chapter President since 2012 but my second term is ending, so I’d like to reflect on how our Emmy® Awards Gala has progressed since then. Today our show is substantially shorter, even though the number of categories awarded has grown over the last four years. During this time we’ve perfected a system of dual live webcasts; including award recipients as well as Red Carpet interviews. Archived clips are now made available to all members after the event. Two talented Emmy® Awards Managing Producers have sustained the gala since I was elected president. Julie Watts, a fearless innovator, presided over the first two years.Karen Sutton, an unsurpassed motivator, led the way during the last two. A special salute goes to Executive Director Darryl Compton who manages the countless advance details that make each event possible, besides working on the production crew. Our galas depend upon the imagination, organization and work ethic of the Emmy® Gala Committee, in addition to a small army of skilled craftspeople. So I implore you one last time as Chapter President, Have a great evening and the best of luck to you! Keith Sanders 3 4 Executive Producer’s Welcome Karen Sutton Executive Producer Kaiser Permanente Emmy® Gala Chair/Executive Producer Governors’ Service Medallion 2015 On behalf of the Emmy® Awards Gala Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 45th Annual Emmy® Awards Gala. The Emmy® Awards Show is sponsored by Key Code Media/Avid and The Handlery Hotel. Please enjoy the varieties of wine, compliments of our generous wine sponsors, Black Cordon Vineyards, Buon Vino Winery and Korbel Winery. We are excited to be hosting Emmy® 2016 at the Miner Auditorium at the SFJAZZ Center, a cultural landmark dedicated to jazz and jazz education in the heart of San Francisco. This night will be especially intimate and memorable, as we are joined by the Marcus Shelby Trio, who will be performing live jazz music throughout the evening! Marcus will also be leading us through our “Emmy® Etiquette Sing-Along.” Please take a moment to review on page 17. Once again, we will be streamlining our on-stage show and providing recipients with an additional platform to give speeches on the red carpet. In addition to the dual-live stream of the show & red carpet interviews, we will provide real-time, individual recipient speeches posted to NATAS YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Please tell your family, friends and colleagues that they can watch you receive your award LIVE and your red carpet interviews on our website http://www.emmysf.tv We encourage you to post and tweet along with us throughout the evening. Add #EmmySF to all of your Emmy® night tweets! We extend a special thank you to the SFJAZZ technical team and the Beyond Pix production team for their creative time, talent, and valuable expertise in putting on this evening’s awards program. We would also like to thank the NATAS Emmy® Gala Committee, the Board of Governors, and our many Emmy® Gala volunteers and staff. Congratulations to all of our Emmy® nominees! We hope you have a memorable evening as we honor the best of the best! The purpose of conferring the coveted Emmy® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual and production achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also a means of focusing public attention upon the multi-talented individuals who comprise this business and to honor them. There can be one award, more than one award or no award presented in each category. This was a record year with 935 entries (757 English and 179 Spanish) were submitted in 67 categories from the calendar year 2015, for Emmy® award consideration. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged online by the following NATAS chapters: Chicago/Midwest; Heartland (Denver); Lone Star (Texas) and Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia). At least seven peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries are judged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to 10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories are judged on creativity and execution only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certified his or her scores and the ballot is sent directly to Spalding and Company, our accounting firm for processing. A tabulated sheet representing each category, with separate entries for English and Spanish-but not identified - was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cut-off score in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The committee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee members made these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. The nominations were announced May 4, 2016 during a live webcast from Access Sacramento. Nomination Parties were held in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and Honolulu. 197 English and 83 Spanish entries were nominated with 895 certificates being handed out to 534 individuals. Tonight, we will see the top scores of Emmy® award excellence. 11 The Awards Committee Julie Watts, KPIX 5 (Chair) Peter Borg, KQED 9 Devon Fox, Comcast SportsNet Craig Franklin, Retired, KPIX 5 Wayne Freedman, KGO ABC 7 Linda Giannecchini, KQED 9/ Franklin Mieuli & Associates (National Awards Chair) Luis Godinez, KDTV Univision 14 Richard Harmelink, KFSN ABC 30 Pablo Iacub, KUVS Univision 19 Da Lin, KPIX 5 Terri Russell, KOLO 8 Steve Shlisky, KTVU Fox 2 Sandy Sirias, KFTV Univision 21 Karen Sutton, Kaiser Permanente Noelle Walker, KTVU Fox 2 Pamela Young, KHON 2 James Spalding, Spalding & Company (Awards Accountant) Keith Sanders, San José State University (President) Darryl R.
