6:00 p.m. Reception 7:00 p.m. Awards Presentation 10:30 p.m. Dessert Celebration 2 President’s Welcome Keith Sanders Media Producer San José State University President NATAS SF/NorCal Governors’ Service Medallion 2002 I’d like to welcome you to the 45th Annual 2015-2016 Area Emmy® Awards gala. Emmy® statuettes will be presented tonight for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). I’ve served as your Chapter President since 2012 but my second term is ending, so I’d like to reflect on how our Emmy® Awards Gala has progressed since then. Today our show is substantially shorter, even though the number of categories awarded has grown over the last four years. During this time we’ve perfected a system of dual live webcasts; including award recipients as well as Red Carpet interviews. Archived clips are now made available to all members after the event. Two talented Emmy® Awards Managing Producers have sustained the gala since I was elected president. Julie Watts, a fearless innovator, presided over the first two years.Karen Sutton, an unsurpassed motivator, led the way during the last two. A special salute goes to Executive Director Darryl Compton who manages the countless advance details that make each event possible, besides working on the production crew. Our galas depend upon the imagination, organization and work ethic of the Emmy® Gala Committee, in addition to a small army of skilled craftspeople. So I implore you one last time as Chapter President, Have a great evening and the best of luck to you!

Keith Sanders

10 2015-2016 Awards Judging Procedures

The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, news and program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. The purpose of conferring the coveted Emmy® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual and production achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also a means of focusing public attention upon the multi-talented individuals who comprise this business and to honor them. There can be one award, more than one award or no award presented in each category. This was a record year with 935 entries (757 English and 179 Spanish) were submitted in 67 categories from the calendar year 2015, for Emmy® award consideration. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged online by the following NATAS chapters: /Midwest; Heartland (); Lone Star (Texas) and Mid-Atlantic (). At least seven peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries are judged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to 10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories are judged on creativity and execution only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certified his or her scores and the ballot is sent directly to Spalding and Company, our accounting firm for processing. A tabulated sheet representing each category, with separate entries for English and Spanish-but not identified - was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cut-off score in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The committee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee members made these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. The nominations were announced May 4, 2016 during a live webcast from Access Sacramento. Nomination Parties were held in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and . 197 English and 83 Spanish entries were nominated with 895 certificates being handed out to 534 individuals. Tonight, we will see the top scores of Emmy® award excellence. 11 The Awards Committee

15 Emmy® Etiquette Congratulations, 2015 Emmy® nominees from your gala committee. This is a reminder of the changes we made two years ago that have helped to streamline the show.

1. Each nominee has submitted a spokesperson that is designated to give a speech, should that nominee receive an award.

2. When the Presenter reads the award recipient, they will also read the name of that spokesperson. But if that spokesperson is not available to come onto the stage, other parties may come onto the stage to receive the statuette in their place.

3. In the event that no spokesperson was submitted with the nomination, then the Presenters will simply announce the Award Recipient and NO ONE will be permitted on the stage for that category.

4. The spokesperson should come up onto the stage using the stairs on the right or left.

5. Once on the stage, the spokesperson will receive a temporary statuette.

6. The spokesperson is then welcome to approach the microphone and give their speech.

7. Other parties are welcome to join the spokesperson on the stage...but they will not be permitted to give a speech.

8. All speeches are limited to 30 seconds.

9. If you are not the designated spokesperson, or you have already given a speech, you will not be permitted to give a speech and will be disappointed to find, that the microphone will not be active.

10. After receiving the award statuette, parties will be escorted backstage to deposit the temporary statuette and be escorted to the Red Carpet area.

11. When you get to the Red Carpet area you will sign and receive your engraved Emmy® statuette, be interviewed on the Red Carpet webcast and have your formal photo taken.

16 Presentation of Emmy® Awards Welcome Karen Sutton Kaiser Perminante; Emmy® Gala Chair; Governors’ Service Medallion 2015

Anything Doesn’t Go To help you remember the rules, our musical director Marcus Shelby has written the thoughts into a song for our opening number. It’s a takeoff on Cole Porter’s Anything Goes sung byDenise Perrier.

The Bridge is a Sing-a-long... If your name was not designated It’s not because you’re faded Submit a person who will But in our show represent Anything doesn’t go! All of the cast that’s present In golden days there was no limit But No, No, No... But now we have got to trim it Anything doesn’t go. To 30 below (That’s seconds!) If that person is not available Anything doesn’t go. Others can come if able, Bridge: To get that gold If the script you write But that’s as far as it goes For the cast you like For the show that might Bridge: Take the gold tonight If you hear your name tonight Then on the mic Come stage left or right You only got tonight Then you’ll grab the mic 30 seconds to compose. To thank those you like Anything doesn’t go. Then you’ll leave the light On the red you’re cool to speak Offstage left -not right Thank everyone in Mozambique To the red carpet so you can Pour out your soul pose. (There) Anything goes!

Stan Atkinson Anchor/Reporter/Host Retired KFTY 50, KTVU 2, KCRA 3, KOVR 13 Silver Circle Class of 1986

Stan Atkinson remains a public figure and recognized personality in Northern California after 40 years in TV and on the air in the Sacramento area - delivering the news. As a TV news anchor, Atkinson traveled to some of the most turbulent places in the world including twice, El Salvador, , Vietnam and , bringing viewers a close-up look as he reported breaking news from the war zones. He wanted to keep his community informed about the fight for Democracy. Atkinson re-launched his Sacramento career as main anchor at NBC Affiliate KCRA in 1976 and was dubbed byThe

50 Sacramento Bee as “The Man Who Owns Sacramento.” In 1994, he became principal news anchor for KOVR until he retired in 1999. He remains one of the most popular news figures in the region. Overseas reporting earned Atkinson three Emmy® awards - two for assignments inside Afghanistan and another for a documentary about Somalia. Atkinson was a principal fundraiser helping to raise money to build the $2.2 million California Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol grounds. Through his Stan Atkinson Foundation, Atkinson has partnered with various organizations including The Sacramento River Cats baseball team and the East Sacramento Rotary to raise money to build River Cat’s Independence Field - a multi- use sports and recreation facility for disabled youth and adults. Before KCRA, Atkinson started a TV station in Santa Rosa. Channel 50 ended up folding and was a heartbreak. But Atkinson’s passion for TV news remained pure and ongoing. The feeling and philosophy continue. He says the night in 1999 when he left the studio for the last time, he was as excited and energized about the business as the first day he walked into a TV station. Today, the personal license plate on his car reads - Old News. But Stan Atkinson remains a legend - a personality recognized for his service to the community and dedication to the industry of television.
