Though the virus may socially distance us, know we are together once more in this most special of ways. This edition of the Gala will be a first. Our award has gone virtual in every digital way imaginable – broadcast on You Tube, socially mediated on Facebook and Twitter, and a special room on Zoom reserved just for nominees. We will not personally hand you an award but you will be able to share the celebration with more family and more friends. Truly, work awarded an Emmy® statuette by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) attests your outstanding achievement. Know that you are among the most gifted journalists and media crafts people in the Chapter. As your regional Chapter president, I am delighted to represent the talented professionals working in Northern California, Reno, Hawaii, and Guam. Emmy® Gala Chair Julie Watts organized this evening’s outstanding event. Special thanks to Chapter Award Committee Chair and Emmy® legend Wayne Freedman. for riding herd over the myriad of details from improving the Call for Entries to screening each entry into the right category. The long award process culminates tonight. My special appreciation goes to Patty Zubov, Joyce Mitchell and Larena Baldazo, who were instrumental in securing sponsors and marketing the Gala. This event happened this year because so many wanted an award show rather than a press release stating the recipients. We are truly blessed with dedicated and talented members of the Gala committee who helped to pull off an award show in impossible times. This night is outstanding because you are out- standing professionals. Thank you for all your hours of phone calls, emails, and Zoom meetings. Two last notes: This will be my final Gala as your president. My presidency ends with the month. The experience has been exceptional, I have loved every minute. I will not be leaving the Chapter. I remain on the board to assist your new President, Randy Forsman, find his footing. That will not take long though. He already has great ideas for the future of our Chapter. Secondly, I dedicate this Gala tonight to our dear friend Linda Giannecchini. Linda died just three days after last year’s Gala. For most on our board this is the first Gala without her guid- ance, comradery, and brilliance. We have so missed her in this last year. Linda watch over us. Steve Shlisky - 5 - Producers Welcome Julie Watts Investigative Reporter/Anchor, KOVR CBS13 NATAS Emmy® Gala Chair 2013-14, 2020 NATAS Awards Chair 2014-16 NATAS Governor 2010-13, 2017-18 Governors’ Service Medallion 2014 On behalf of the Gala Committee, welcome to the 49th ANNUAL (First-Ever-Virtual) EMMY® AWARDS GALA. When we began this year planning for a return to our sit-down-dinner awards show, we could have never imagined how quickly we’d have to pivot to this unprecedented format in the wake of the pandemic. While we wish we could gather in person, we’ve been working hard to produce a virtual awards show for you with as much elegance and camaraderie as our live gala. MULTIPLE PLATFORMS Like many events and broadcasts these days, our show includes elements of streaming, Zoom, social media and crowd-sourced content. Each virtual platform and element was intentionally chosen to replicate some element of the live event. For the best interactive experience, we hope you’ll watch tonight using multiple screens and devices so that you can watch the main show on our YouTube channel – EMMY SF TV while live-commenting on our Facebook Page - EMMY SF TV. If you’re one of our 452 nominees, we hope you’ll also join our VIP Watch Party on Zoom. (You should have received an invitation link by email.) Everyone else can watch both the live show and the live Zoom feed side by side on our website, EmmySF.TV. We’ve also posted an Emmy® Award Show Rundown at EmmySF.TV so you know exactly what time your category is coming up. If you have a smart TV with a YouTube app, we encourage you to watch the show on your big screen at our YouTube channel – EMMY SF TV. While we’d love for you to post and share on all social channels with our Emmy® night hashtags #EMMYSF2020 and #EMMYSFAtHome, we’re hoping you will specifically join us on Facebook for live commenting and chat during the show. - 6 - ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES It was important that we keep the excitement of the live reveal and give each recipient their moment in the spotlight. So this year, in lieu of live speeches, we asked nominees to submit acceptance clips in advance. The variety and creativity of the segments you submitted are sure to add many unique and fun moments tonight. If you didn’t submit a speech, we encourage you to post one tonight on social media along with a link to your entry using #EMMYSF2020 and #EMMYSFAtHome. If you did submit an acceptance clip that airs tonight, we’d love for you to post a copy of that too along with a link to your entry and our hashtags. THE TEAM This night would not be possible without the hard work and sacrifice of President, Steve Shlisky who carried much of the weight by editing this labor-intensive show, along with Patty Zubov, Kevin Wing and Joyce Mitchell who helped wrangle the many moving parts. We’d also like to thank the Emmy® Gala Committee, our Board of Governors, our presenters, Tracy Peterson of The AV Society, Photojournalist Ken Day and our Awards Chair Wayne Freedman. Congratulations to all of our Emmy® Nominees. We hope you have a memorable evening as we honor the best in our business.
