Department of Music Stony Brook University The Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin Department of Music Stony Brook University Rock, pop music, and society MUS 109 (86275) Fall 2018 This course is a (mostly) chronological survey of the musicians, producers, albums, concerts, genres, instruments, publications, substances, sounds, arguments, and ideas crucial to the past seven decades of rock and pop music. We will examine a musical form vital to twentieth-century artistic innovation, grappling with questions of race, gender, sexuality, and political change along the way. In addition to readings, you will listen carefully to important pieces of music, exploring them formally and historically. Each week, you’ll read a mixture of autobiography, music journalism, interviews, social criticism, and more. You will listen to music, and sometimes view a documentary or video. Several short response essays throughout the semester will allow you to flex your critical and argumentative muscles. By the end of the semester, you will possess an expanded musical vocabulary and a deep knowledge of an important branch of musical history. Neveah’s Dream Came True! The generous staff at Glory Days Grill shared the news with Nevaeh, 10 from Beltsville, MD who has Spina Bifida, that she and her family were going to Walt Disney World. Neveah had tears of joy to learn she would fly with her family to Florida and stay at Sunshine Foundation Dream Village. Thank you to Glory Days Grill for sponsoring Nevaeh's Dream and to our Sunshine Foundation All-Volunteer Chapter Miss Sunshine Foundation Charity Pageant Queens for helping to welcome Nevaeh and her family. The generosity from Glory Days Grill makes it possible for Sunshine Foundation to make Neveah and other children’s Dreams Come True! Central Michigan University students gave up their typical spring break to do an alternative spring break by volunteering at the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village. They worked hard on repainting our entrance wall and were able to work on getting a tan while they were at it. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and for trading your spring break to volunteer with us! Jacob, 8, from Ocala FL diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Enjoyed his trip to the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village, and was able to visit the Walt Disney World Theme Parks.
