This Executive Summary summarises the STAG process undertaken in order to determine the study options to be taken forward to STAG 2 Appraisal. Doing nothing is not considered feasible due to the impacts and costs of continuing to operate ageing ferry and terminal infrastructure beyond its lifespan. -

Yell The Old Haa Yell Gateway to the northern isles The Old Haa at Burravoe dates from 1672 and was opened as a museum in 1984. It houses a permanent display of material depicting the history of Yell. Outside there is a monument to the airmen who lost their lives in 1942 in a Catalina crash on the moors of Some Useful Information South Yell. It will be provided on an annual basis. As part of the development of Shetland’s Regional Transport Strategy (RTS) a number of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were put in place, in order to measure progress on delivering the aims and objectives of the strategy. This document provides the following information for each of the KPIs: Purpose of the KPI; Source(s) of data; Available data and analysis. Where possible data is provided for up to five years prior to 2007-08. 2 3 Reliability of Shetland’s Transport Network (KPI 1) This indicator has been set up to monitor the reliability of the various public transport services in Shetland’s transport network. One of the central policies of the Shetland Islands Council is the development of sustainable communities and transport reliability has a significant role to play in this area. -

North Isles Geology SHETLAND HERITAGE TRAILS Discover the North Isles... 1 In the North Isles of Shetland you get a real sense of Shetland’s 2 geological journey. Walk over 500 million year old rocks from an ancient ocean floor, view the dramatic storm eroded coastline of Britain’s most northerly point and discoverthe forces at work in the building of a huge mountain chain! 4 Unst and Fetlar - an ancient ocean floor exposed 420 million years ago an ancient ocean called the Iapetus was beginning to close. The landmasses of America and Europe on either side of the Iapetus began to “drift” towards one another and the ocean disappeared. During this closure, part of the floor of the ancient ocean was trapped and thrust up onto the nearby North American continent. 5 3 This ancient ocean crust (an ophiolite) now forms the eastern parts of Unst and Fetlar. Western Unst is the remnants of that ancient American continent. Britain’s northern tip is punctured by multiple stacks, caves, ‘geos’ and skerries. The peninsula has seen millions of years of storm driven erosion that have sculpted the the present coastline. Now the cliffs are a haven for Puffins and Gannets, while Great Skuas nest inland on the blanket bog. ‘America’ Shetland The rocks that make up the peninsula are metamorphic. They have IAPETUS ‘Europe’ been changed and altered under extreme heat and pressure OCEAN generated by the continental collision. -

Apologies were noted. Declaration of CCllr AH declared interest in request for safety mirror. Interest Minutes of the Meeting held 04.06.19 were approved by CCllr MH and Approval of Previous Minutes seconded by Cllr WP. Matters Arising Road/Pedestrian Safety concerns Further discussions took place re the possibility of a cycle path from Huxter to the school if funding could be secured through the Active Travel Project. Concerns continue to be raised also around Heatherlea Junction/Sandwick Junction. There has been no further communication from Robina Barton. An email from Bo Hickey, Information Officer, Sustrans was received 3rd June asking for more information from WCC about our priorities for routes. Clerk has emailed requesting what level of information is required. No reply so far. School Bus Transport Reply has been received from S.I.C. to effect that as yet they do not have numbers of pupils who would be needing transport next session but would let us know what is planned once they have that information.
