East Yorkshire Local Food Network's November 2013 Newsletter Welcome to East Yorkshire Local Food Network’s November 2013 Newsletter CHAIRMAN’S UPDATE It was good to see so many of you at the Network’s 1 st Anniversary and Awards Ceremony on 21 October at Beverley Tickton Grange. The Awards came from a suggestion by Mark Farnsworth to the Business Development Group. With support from Ed Sweeting, a small team from within the Network organised them. It shows what you can do to help each other. Thanks to all the members who gave of their time and thanks to those who came to support. We are delighted that HM Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, the Honorable Mrs Susan Cunliffe-Lister, has agreed to be our Patron. This is great news as she is a great supporter of local food and indeed her experience at Burton Agnes Hall and Swinton Park brings hands-on knowledge to our group. The Lord-Lieutenant presented the following winners with a certificate and a hand-thrown plate made by Pat from The Old Milking Parlour Pottery in Sancton: Best Fresh Local Product TC Patisserie, Beverley Best Packaged Local Product Side Oven Bakery, Foston on the Wolds Best Local Menu The Star at Sancton Best Retailer of Local Produce Drewtons Farm Shop, South Cave Best Food and Drink Event Beverley Food Festival Local Food Hero David Nowell of Beverley Tickton Grange The following businesses were Highly Commended: Best Fresh Local Product East Riding Country Pork, Halsham and Yorkshire Ducks & Geese, Leven Best Packaged Product Wolds Cottage Kitchen, Wetwang and Side Oven Bakery, Foston on the Wolds Best Local Menu Wrygarth Inn, Great Hatfield Best Retailer of Local Produce Yorkshire Ales, Snaith Well done everyone! 2 Highly Commended Businesses with the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire The evening commenced with the Annual General Meeting of the Network and we formally appointed the following Directors (who have been serving by invitation to date): Representing: the Hospitality membership David Nowell and Ray Thompson the Farmers’ Markets Neil Marshall and Linda Thornton the Festival and Events Organisers David Tite and Sean Welsh the Producers Nigel Bartle and Tim Sellers the Retailers Mark Farnsworth and Katie Taylor Independent Graham Ward (Chair) Both Graham Ward and David Nowell gave brief reviews of our work and our future plans. These can be read in full if you ask Julia. The EYLFN Directors celebrating the 1st Anniversary of the Network (Cake presented by TC Patisserie) We achieved 100 members on the night and a gift voucher for the Star at Sancton was presented to Christine from The Grange Range of Liqueurs, after her ticket was drawn from a hat. We now have some 104 members and are on our way to our target of 200 by next year’s ceremony! We would like to thank Back-up Training & Recruitment Ltd and the Yorkshire Bank for their sponsorship. The bottle of champagne draw held by Yorkshire Bank was won by Arthur Hodgson (to enjoy with his crab and lobster!) There were many other people to thank. I will not repeat the long and welcome list, but I would like to formally record our thanks to ERYC for their partnership support, and I hope Cllr Jane Evison and Helen Wright are pleased with the concept; it certainly helped us and continues to do so. Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm and a VERY BIG THANKS TO JULIA from all of us. 3 Things You Might Find Interesting or Helpful Future Funds from Europe and Government for Rural Business You may be aware of the considerable discussions going on to shape a new 5-year strategy and delivery plan for tackling the ‘market failure’ of rural businesses. The term ‘market failure’ does not imply that rural businesses do not work, but that they lack the advantages of scale and short chains enjoyed by larger urban business. In particular in the Network’s case, PR activities, access to skills training and financial equalities. From a local point of view, we are in contact with the LEPs, ERYC regarding the Partnership Agreement and we are involved with the Transition LAG looking at the future of the LEADER strategy. There are a lot of meetings and paperwork, but I do need a continued feed in from yourselves about your needs and aspirations, so that we can best take advantage of these future funds for small rural businesses. On 31 October, the Secretary of State published the consultation on the implementation of CAP reform in England. Views are being sought on various issues relating to: • Direct payments to farmers, • Greening of direct payments, • The rate of transfer between the budgets for direct payments (Pillar 1) and Rural Development Programme (Pillar 2), • The focus of the Rural Development Programme. The consultation runs until 28 November 2013. https://consult.defra.gov.uk/communications/cap-consultation Tender Opportunity – Groceries, Fresh Produce and Milk and Fresh Bread ERYC has advertised the Council’s Groceries, Fresh Produce and Milk and Bread contract on the website https://www.eastridingcontractsfinder.co.uk ERYC is seeking submissions from wholesale distributors to deliver goods to individual establishments and from companies who wish to supply into wholesale distributors as a nominated supplier. Tender documentation and full details of products required and service specification are available on this site once registered. Registration is free. Expression of interest end date: 20 November 2013. For further information contact: [email protected] 10,000 Small Business Programme A series of information events are being held to give delegates further information about the 10,000 Small Business Programme and to hear about the impact the programme has had on previous participants. The information events are free to attend and are being held in the following locations: Wed 13 Nov 5.30pm for 6.00pm – Holiday Inn, York Tue 19 Nov 8.00am for 8.30am – The Village Hotel, Hull For further details visit http://www.business.leeds.ac.uk/10ksb As some of you will be aware, Andy Wheeler has been appointed Fisheries & Coastal Business Adviser. Andy is based at Bridlington Business Centre and can be contacted on Tel: 01262 401399. His main role will be assisting businesses related in some way to the seafood sector. ERYC has published a ‘Guide to Planning for Business’, which can be found on the Rural Partnership webpage: http://www2.eastriding.gov.uk/council/working-with-our-partners/rural-partnerships-and- forums/rural-partnership/?locale=en Hampshire Fare Newsletter http://www.hampshirefare.co.uk/attachments/newsletters/rad6DC48.htm Produced by our colleagues in the South. Notice the list of supporters and sponsors. One of our aims for 2014 is to attract such supporting companies. The Awards event shows we can do it. Please talk to your contacts about this and do not be shy! We are planning to re-vamp our monthly newsletter with the help of a new volunteer, who has kindly offered to help the Network with some marketing and branding. With best wishes Graham Ward (Chair, Board of Directors) 4 LOCAL BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENTS Grow Your Business this November as part of York Business Week This is a fantastic opportunity to not only celebrate the great businesses that we have across the region, but also to give you the chance to learn from each other, to swap ideas, to discuss your development and give you the opportunity to grow.
