Monitoring of the excavation of the foundation trenches revealed evidence for previous structures on the site, 18th century brickwork having been laid, in at least one instance, upon rubble stone walling that followed a different alignment. This rubble stone in its turn had been laid on at least one course of dressed stone probably dating from the late medieval period. Finds recovered from the site dated from the medieval period through to the 18th century. Most intriguing of these was 13/14th century jug that had been broken and reused as a paint pot. The watching brief exposed one linear feature that may form part of an Iron Age and Romano-British landscape. Well-preserved wooden fragments were exposed that formed part of a log boat and a trackway of 6th or 7th century date and also found was a series of driven timbers of 13th century date. Three sides of a previously unrecorded moated site were exposed. Within the area defined by the moat there was evidence for structures and later alterations to the site. Pottery recovered from the site suggests that the moated site was in occupation from the 12th-16th centuries. Within this area there was evidence for the 17th-20th century development and alteration of the landscape. The boat and trackway site could be considered of national and perhaps international significance. [Au(abr)]

The earliest archaeological features were of probable Anglo-Saxon date and appeared to be of a structural nature. A number of Anglo-Saxon burials succeeded these features. One was accompanied by a willow rod and bead, and was covered by a wooden board; the remainder wren in wooden coffins and all were preserved by water-logging. The early burials were on a different alignment from those that succeeded them and may have been focused on an early church. Further burials, preceding the earliest stone structural remains, followed those of Anglo-Saxon date and must related to a church of which no upstanding remains were found. Traces of lime mortar in the earliest contexts of this series suggest the presence of a stone-built structure, or structures, in the vicinity. The earliest stone structural remains were buttresses and parts of nave walling foundation of probable 12th to 13th century date. This building, assuming it was ever completed, was slightly narrower than the existing 14th century nave. Only a handful of burials occurred between the earliest stone structural remains and the 14th century nave and its buttresses. Extensive sequences of burials post-dated the construction of the extant 14th century nave. the latest deposits encountered related principally to scaffolding post holes and modern surfaces. An archaeological excavation was undertaken following a previous evaluation. A single area of the site within the car park was opened and the excavation encountered evidence for prehistoric and Anglo- Scandinavian activity. This was in the form of occasional worked flint or pottery, although no features of these early dates were excavated. A 12th century boundary ditch which was replaced slightly to the south in the mid to late 14th century was also recorded. The second ditch contained domestic material in the form of pottery and animal bone, the upper fills also contained evidence to indicate that these craft activities had been taking place within the confines of the trench they were likely to have been carried out in the vicinity. Several pits of late medieval date containing domestic refuse, were excavated within the trench. The boundary ditches were still present in the post-medieval period with a slightly different alignment, the area appeared to have been occupied by open agricultural or horticultural land then after. Remains observed during the construction of the flood defences consisted predominantly of alluvial silt deposits and natural clay beneath the modern topsoil. In one area to the west of the Buttercrambe Road, medieval pottery was found in association with a concentration of stones that may be the remains of stone banks. The function of this area was uncertain but it was probably the result of medieval ploughing, with pottery associated with field clearance. Close to the 18th and 19th century mill on the eastern side of the village, the construction of the flood defence wall exposed deposits associated with the infilling of the mill pond. A chamber excavated on the Buttercrambe Road exposed a layer of rough cobbles that was probably a Roman road surface. [Au(abr)]

The investigations revealed significant archaeological remains, dating from the Roman period onwards. The earliest activity on the site comprised a substantial cut feature into which appeared to be a set number of wooden structures, including a fence, stake alignments and a track. The exact function of the complex, probably a pond or channel, remained unclear. Pottery recovered from the complex comprised a few sherds of Roman second to fourth century AD date. However, radiocarbon and dendrochronological dating of the wood structures suggests a late sixth to early seventh century date for the complex. It seems likely therefore that there was some continuity of activity in the area from the Late Roman into the post-Roman period. Within the areas defined by the ditches were a number of discrete pits. The features may have been contemporary with a major rebuilding of St. Peter's Church and the construction of Conisbrough Castle in the 12th century. [Au(abr)]

Meandering flues leading to the chimney base were recorded from the final period of occupation, the late nineteenth/ early twentieth century, of the lead works. Production debris from the site was analysed and found to conform with descriptions of the manufacture of red lead contained in nineteenth century metallurgical texts. [Au(abr)]

Four trenches were excavated but only three yielded any archaeological deposits. Trench one revealed a field boundary ditch believed to be of Iron Age/Roman date. Within trench two, the profiles of three linear ditches of a triple ditch enclosure and their relationship with a ringed ditch enclosure were established and evidence of possible post holes and a burnt post in situ were found. Trench three failed to establish the foundations of a possible building platform. Trench four revealed a stone covered bank which appeared to be part of a Bronze Age round barrow which was overlain by a clay floor which sealed 19th century archaeology and may have been part of a clay floored building. No remains earlier than the mid-17th century were encountered during either the excavation or watching brief, although residual medieval pottery was frequently recovered from later deposits. The earliest feature at the site was a large ditch cut into subsoil orientated approximately north-west/south- east, encountered during both the excavation and watching brief. Where excavated by hand, it proved to be substantial, over 7.0m wide and up to c. 2.5m deep. During excavation, 17th century ceramic and three pieces of lead shot were recovered. It is likely that the ditch represented the remains of the siegework which were excavated around Pontefract Castle during the Civil War. The partially backfilled ditch was later host to a total of three brick clamps. A late 18th century stone built culvert was associated with layers of made ground. The 19th century malting buildings were encountered during watching brief and a possible pit associated with this phase was excavated in Intervention 14. The reduction of the ground surface exposed a well-preserved cobbled yard that had partially been covered with tarmac, the foundations of the recently demolished buildings and part of the floor plan of another structure that is shown on the 18th century plan and the 1911 Ordnance Survey map. Close to rear of the upstanding section of 189a , below a demolished modern extension, a cellar was exposed lined with salt glazed bricks. Also exposed close to the rear of 189a High Street was a chamber with a brick barrel vault roof that appeared to have been used as a water tank. The dates of the archaeological features at the rear of 189a High Street were uncertain but it seemed likely that they were 18th-20th century. [Au(abr)]

An archaeological watching brief was carried out on land to the west of Northallerton cemetery, formerly occupied by allotments, which was to be used as a cemetery extension. The landscaping work involved the stripping of topsoil and the raising of the ground level by up to 1m using imported subsoil. A single archaeological feature was identified, a large linear feature. This feature may have been associated with the 13th century Bishop's Palace and motte and bailey representing a previously unrecorded ditch or moated boundary. Finds of a post-medieval date were recovered from the upper part of the ditch only, so the actual date of the feature was uncertain. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number:ENY2583

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of foundations for holiday lodges. A ceramic drainage pipe was located in two trenches towards the west of the site. Some 50m south of these trenches, a robbed-out slot was recorded which most likely represented a continuation of the pipe route. It was possible that the pipeline represented part of an 18th century water supply to Richmo nd. Alternatively the manufacture characteristics of the bricks were consistent with their use to channel effluent. Analysis of any surface residues and a thin section of the brick fabric were recommended to establish the use and source of origin of the ceramic bricks recovered. An archaeological excavation was conducted in advance of development at Marne Barracks. A Mesolithic knapping floor was identified containing over 1100 chert flakes, all debitage from tool manufacture. Overlying the knapping floor was a large Neolithic palisaded enclosure. This was only partly exposed with c.40% lying to the south of the excavated area. It consisted of two concentric sub- circular palisades that, based on projections from the exposed structure, would originally have enclosed a total area of c. 2.75ha. A sample from a posthole yielded a date of 2630BC-2470BC (cal.). This enclosure was seen as being of national importance and many respects unique. Two Roman ditches were also recorded containing pottery dated to the 1st or early 2nd century AD. Gullies, possibly part of a Roman field system were recorded as well as post-medieval pits, a road and field boundaries. Remains of a possible modern sentry box were also recorded. A programme of ongoing archaeological excavations carried out ahead of sand extraction had been undertaken from 2001-2004. This interim report summarised the evidence from 2001-2004. The site contained archaeological features and finds ranging in date from the Late Mesolithic to the post- medieval period. Before 2004, features identified included the following: Prehistoric post-pits, some of which were in alignment, a hengiform enclosure with possible associated cremation burials, barrow with further burials accompanied by food vessels and beakers, trackways, field systems and later medieval/post-medieval field boundaries. The 2004 work added to this by identifying a small barrow with an associated burial containing beaker, with evidence for a late individual being inserted into the grave with the previous individuals bones being carefully stacked against the side of the grave. Another associated grave had the original crouches burial removed leaving only the articulated right foot and

Archaeological Investigations Project 2004 Post-determination & Non-planning Yorkshire & Humberside had been replaced by a dog burial (undated). Further excavations were planned for 2005-2006 and it was predicted the site would be fully published after the last phase of work in 2006-2007. [AIP] SMR primary record number:ENY2798

A watching brief and limited excavation at New Quay Road, Whitby, produced well preserved evidence of occupation on the west bank of the River Esk, dating from the 12th century onwards. Successive reclamations extended the occupied land further into the river from the late medieval period onwards. Well-preserved environmental evidence indicated a medieval population with a varied diet. Finds from post-medieval reclamation material points to the presence of a number of crafts, including metal-working, in the vicinity at that time. [Au]

A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks associated with redevelopment of the site, formerly a hippodrome, later converted into a theatre. The site contained post-medieval cellars which covered 90% of the site, this would have removed any archaeology in most of the area. Two copper cisterns were recorded with an evidence for an associated pond nearby. These features were interpreted as late 18th/early 19th century industrial features possibly linked with tanning (modern St Thomas Street was known as Tanner Row until the mid 19th century). Post-medieval and modern pottery was also recorded. [AIP] SMR primary record number:ENY2547

A degree of spatial organisation was also evident with ditch boundaries being created. A large number of stake holes were recorded indicating that lightweight structures were erected on the site. An archaeological watching brief was conducted on a c. 85m stretch of the York City walls during the temporary removal of the stone paving slabs, the demolition of the internal brick jack arches and the clearance of rubble from the base of the void between the two walls. This work enabled the insertion of steel bars which tied the curtain wall and the inner wall together. The work was located between the Chainages 822-906. All of the extant fabric of the city walls was found to be 19th century and all deposits observed between the two walls appeared to be modern. [Au(abr)]

The topographic survey defined a series of very low level earthwork anomalies, of which the only significant feature was that of a possible north-south aligned ditch. This feature was anticipated but not encountered during the watching brief monitoring. The watching brief phase of this project monitored both the removal of topsoil within the corridor of the race track extension and the excavation of a new drainage system. The earliest archaeological activity encountered at this site was represented by a large spread of 19th century refuse. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number:650
