A single piece of moulded masonry was recovered from the trench dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the construction of a dwelling. Archaeological features identified during the work included a stone surface, a short length of stone wall foundation, a post hole, a pit and a large burnt feature, possibly a kiln or an oven. The only finds recovered were three sherds of late 15th to 16th century pottery associated with the stone surface. This rubble stone in its turn had been laid on at least one course of dressed stone probably dating from the late medieval period. Finds recovered from the site dated from the medieval period through to the 18th century. Most intriguing of these was 13/14th century jug that had been broken and reused as a paint pot. Post Excavation Interim Report Dean, G York : York Archaeological Trust, 2005, 11pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The watching brief exposed one linear feature that may form part of an Iron Age and Romano-British landscape. Well-preserved wooden fragments were exposed that formed part of a log boat and a trackway of 6th or 7th century date and also found was a series of driven timbers of 13th century date. Three sides of a previously unrecorded moated site were exposed. Within the area defined by the moat there was evidence for structures and later alterations to the site. Pottery recovered from the site suggests that the moated site was in occupation from the 12th-16th centuries. Within this area there was evidence for the 17th-20th century development and alteration of the landscape. The boat and trackway site could be considered of national and perhaps international significance.
