[The effect ofaggregation patterns on the interference between a host species, Epinotia tedella (Cl.) (Lep., Tortricidae), and its parasitoid species.l - Ent. Tidskr. 100:145-149. Lund, Sweden 1979. ISSN 0013-886x. The distribution of host density and of the attack frequencies of its two dominating parasitoids, Pimplopterus dubius (Hgn.) and Apanteles tedellae Nix., has been measured within a homogeneous and a very heterogeneous spruce stand. Through a classification ofa stand into 27 discrete subhabitat types, and an estimation of corresponding indices of preference for the three species, a simple model on distribution and parasitism was set up. The strongly aggregating A. tedellae constitutes as a stabilizing factor, but P. dubius makes the system unstable because of its weak and slightly inverse aggregation pattern. The relation between aggregation patterns and competition between parasitoids is investi- gated, and a partition of the competition into one component of multiparasitic relations and another concerning the exploitation of the common resource, i.e. the host population, is discussed. Obviously, the absence ofa significant aggregation is an advantage to P. dubius, that is competing with the multiparasitic winner, and strongly aggregatingA. tedellae. M. ecoent2129 Ecological Entomology (1996) 21, 396–398 SHORT COMMUNICATION Is fecundity correlated with resistance to viral disease in the western tent caterpillar? LORNE D. ROTHMAN andJUDITH H. MYERS Centre for Biodiversity Research, Department of Zoology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada Key words: Nuclear polyhedrosis virus, baculovirus, Malacosoma, tent caterpillars, fecundity, disease resistance. Introduction from large egg masses (Myers & Kukan, 1995). This prediction was tested by treating individuals from a wide range of egg Reduced fecundity following high larval densities is a common mass sizes with a NPV, and relating the percentage mortality feature of lepidopteran populations and may contribute to per family (egg mass) to maternal fecundity (number of eggs population declines (Myers, 1988; Munster-Swendsen, 1991). per egg mass). Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.

Our results showed a continuous flight period for E. formosana - from the beginning of May to the first decade of October. Catches of R. resinella were recorded from the beginning of May to the second half of July. In addition to target species, we recorded 14 non-target tortricids during this study. The most abundant species among them was Cnephasia pasiuana, a known pest on poaceous crops in Bulgaria. We reported the attraction of males of this species to a mixture of E9-12Ac and Z9-12Ac in a ratio of 1: 1 (dos- age 300 µg).

  • Tarset and Greystead Biological Records
Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live.

  • Phenology and Natural Mortalities of the Fir Needleminer, Epinotia Fraternana (Hw.) (Lepi Doptera, T Ortricidae)
Phenology and natural mortalities of the fir needleminer, Epinotia fraternana (Hw.) (Lepi doptera, T ortricidae) MIKAEL MUNSTER-SWENDSEN Mlinster-Swendsen, M.: Phenology and natural mortalities of the fir needleminer, Epinotia.fraternana (Hw.) (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae). Ent. Meddr 57: 11 I-120. Copenhagen, Denmark, I 989. ISSN 0013-8851. The phenology and natural mortalities were investigated by use of funnel traps, emergence traps, branch samples and forest litter samples in a plantation of Abies nordmanniana (Stev.). Larval endoparasitism constituted 81.6% in 1986 and 78.8% in 1987. Charmon extensor (Linn.) (Braconidae) was the predominant primary parasitoid followed by Pimplopterus dubius (Hlmg.) (Ichneumonidae). Apparently, neither of these are host-specific, but they seem to show a delayed density dependent response to E . .fraternana. Ectoparasitism of I 8.4% and 23.7% and a predation by cecidomyid larvae of 1.7% on mining larvae were recorded. 25.3% of the hibernating larvae were killed by the pathogenous fungus Paecilomycis farinosus (Holm), whereas at least 15.3% of the hibernating larvae and pupae were killed by predators, possibly by Athous subfuscus L. (Elateridae) and some staphylinids. The phenology and the sequence and magnitude of mortalities were almost identical with those of Epinotia tedella (Cl.), a closely related needleminer in Norway spruce, and so was the pattern of population fluctuations. Only the attachment to different host tree genera seems to separate the two species ecologically. Hence, key factors and predictive models of E. tedella may to some extent be valid for E. fraternana also. M.
