The Golden Fleece The story of Argonauts and the quest for The Golden Fleece. Jason, the son of Aeson, descendant of God Aeolus was heir of the throne of Lolcus. His wife would be a famous sorceress Medea, daughter of king Aeetes of Colchis - where The Golden Fleece resided. Jason’s mission was to bring back The Golden Fleece from Colchis. The Golden Fleece was the skin of a winged ram, the holy ram of Zeus. Jason, following the commands of King Pelias, began his voyage known as Argonautica. He had to recruit the best warriors. About 50 of them including Hercules and Orpheus. Jason had the support of Goddess Hera who wanted revenge for king Pelias not worshipping her. After the journey they arrived Colchis where Jason had Asked King Aeetes to give him The Golden Fleece and how it was also the wish of Hera. Aeetes agreed but set a trial that Jason sure was to fail. Asking Jason to plough the land using two bulls with metallic legs which threw flames from their nostrils, and then sow teeth of the dragon that the king gave to him. Aeetes knew that by sewing the teeth, an army of warriors would come out of the soil to attack him. The Golden Fleece Medea, the daughter of Aeetes knew of this plan, told Jason about it, and gave him an ointment that would make him invincible to iron and fire for one whole day. Medea also told Jason to throw a stone at one of the warriors so that they would all be in a battle and eventually kill each other. Jason succeeded in the task with the help of Medea retrieving the Golden Fleece. Madea knew her father would soon follow them so she killed her brother, spreading pieces of him throughout the ocean so that her father would find them, leaving them enough time to escape. Zeus was not happy with the killing of Madea's brother so he made obstacles for them to face on their journey back such as the sirens, Skylla and Charybdis, etc. They ended up succeeding in the obstacles with the help of Apollo. Jason headed back home giving the Golden Fleece to King Pelias. Orpheus and Eurydice Orpheus was the son of the muse Calliope and the god Apollo. Orpheus had a beautiful voice and he was given a lyre as a boy and learned no play instantly, and it has been said that no god and mortal could resist his music; even the rocks and trees would move closer to hear him play. He even put the “sleepless dragon” to sleep, to help Jason get the Golden Fleece in the previous story. Then he fell in love with a beautiful shy girl named Eurydice (a wood nymph). The love between the two was immense and they soon got married. However, a shepherd named Aristaeus wanted Eurydice for himself and he then plotted a plan to take her away from Orpheus. When he was near the lovers, he jumped to kill Orpheus but Orpheus grabbed Eurydice and they both ran as fast as they could. Then all of a sudden Eurydice fell, and Orpheus grieved as he saw that a poisonous snake had bitten her killing her instantly. Orpheus and Eurydice After the death of Eurydice, Orpheus was no longer the same, he grieved day and night. Until his father the god Apollo heard his cries about bringing back Eurydice. Apollo convinced Hades the god of the underworld to accept Orpheus into the underworld and hear his plea. Once Orpheus was in front of the king Hades and his queen Persephone, he played his lyre and both the heartless king and the Cerberus the three headed dog, guardian of the underworld could not contain their sadness and they let Orpheus take Eurydice back to the living world. However, they warned him not to look at Eurydice until she reached the light. Orpheus was excited but he didn’t trust Hades and once they were almost at their end he noticed that he didn’t her any footsteps behind him. Fearing that he had been tricked, he looked back and saw his beautiful Eurydice. By doing so he disobeyed Hades and soon the underworld took back Eurydice. He was devastated and tried to enter the underworld again but was denied entry. Days passed and he no longer lived as before and he knew no other girl would take her place, so he got to the point where he shunned women completely. The women who tried to get close to him were furious that he ignored them, so they went after him and killed him. He was so still so sad that he didn’t even try to save himself, and he let them tear him up to shreds and throw him in a river.
