ANNEX

Notices of data-processing competitions

The duties described in section I (Nature of duties) are to be performed within an organization using distributed data processing. The posts to be filled may therefore be in the Informatics Directorate, which has just over 400 staff, or in local units attached to operational departments, or possibly in departments responsible for looking after Community interests in outside projects or research supported by the Commission (e.g. the ESPRIT programme).

1. The Commission uses a distributed data-processing architecture based on three elements:

the mainframe in the Luxembourg centre, which is equipped with ICL, Siemens, Amdahl and Bull machines;

the public packet-switched data-transmission networks; and

distributed equipment installed in user departments: local computers including Thomson (Micromega 32), NCR (Tower), Siemens (75 series) and ICL (DM1); personal computers including Olivetti (M 24) and ICL (Perq); text processors, etc.

2. The following software options were selected from the latest invitation to tender: — operating systems: : for various types of computer, MS DOS: for Olivetti M 24 micros, BS2000: for Siemens mainframes and minis, VME: mainly for ICL mainframes, VM: for IBM-compatible mainframes, GCOS8: for Bull mainframes; — general data-base management systems: ADABAS/NATURAL, IDMS/R (Cullinet), IDMS-X (ICL), IDS II (Honeywell Bull);

— documentary data-base systems: MISTRAL V (Bull), BASIS (Batelle); — statistical software: SAS, TROLL;

— numerous software packages available under UNIX and MS DOS.

3. The Commission's internal data-processing projects cover a wide range of applications including personnel and administration, statistics, finance, economics, documentation, and multilingualism. Most of these applications require the selection and/or use of software packages, the constitution of data bases and, on occasion, the use of systems incorporating office automation facilities. A number of specific pilot projects are also being developed in the office automation field.

Within the broader span of Insis (Community interinstitutional system of integrated information services), several large-scale projects involving the other European institutions and, in some cases, the Member States are already in progress. One example is the interinstitutional electronic mail project, which also encompasses the integration of various aspects of office automation (Teletex, message handling system (MHS), etc.).
