Diana Athill: "Now," "Then," and then "Now" againBy Sharon IschI've been an Athill fan ever since I read "Stet," her year 2000 memoir about her 50 years at the Andre Deutsch publishing house, where she edited the books of Jean Rhys, V. S. Naipaul, Norman Mailer and Philip Roth among others.I greatly enjoyed her 2004 Desert Island Discs interview on the BBC that I found on Google. But, far and away, "Somewhere Towards the End," her candid look at what growing old is really like, written at age 91, remains my favorite. I particularly remember her promising she'd give up her car keys the year she turned 80. only to discover on getting there, that that's also the age when your feet give out, And arriving at the realization that those who exit this life with relative ease almost always have a devoted daughter attached to make it so (something she and I both lack.)This little 169-page memoir of an upperclass British childhood begins and ends with a "Now" chapter. The "Then" chapters look into her parents' miserably unhappy marriage. The ghost in the night nursery. Taking class too much for granted to question it, then discovering that smugness, while formidable, was not quite leak-proof. Falling in love for the first time at the age of 11, only to find that by age 12 she already loved someone else and was thus, alas, fickle! Her mother's admission that she'd once done something both daring and vulgar: she'd smiled back at a man on the street who'd smiled at her. Her brother Andrew suffering his way through the miserable British upper class tradition of shipping their sons off to boarding school at the age of 8. The angst of seeing her fiance go off to war. Then getting jilted by same. And, of course, coming from a family in which everyone found books one of life's main sources of pleasure.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A childhood in SuffolkBy Shalom FreedmanAthill opens this memoir of her childhood by giving an account of her mother's last days. The Athills or many of them live into their nineties with their mental facilities intact. When Athill comes to see her fading mother, the mother awakes and gives her a tremendous happy smile. Her death is difficult for some hours but is largely a 'good one' surrounded by loving family. Athill then chronicles the story of her childhood in the estate of her grandparents in Suffolk. Wealthy and isolated, closely connected with nature, the love of reading and the love of horseback riding are prominent parts. Athill give a gripping account of her parents' unhappy marriage. She then tells us of her first gropings at romance, and how the world of her imagination develops. She is a clear, forthright writer whose writing is pervaded by a kind of aesthetic grace. A remarkable, truthful and vivid recollection of childhood, from the author of Stet, After a Funeral, Don't Look at Me Like That and Instead of a Letter. Here Athill goes back to the beginning in a sharp evocation of a childhood unfashionably filled with happiness - a Norfolk country house, servants, the pleasures of horses, the unfolding secrets of adults and sex. This is England in the 1920s seen (with a clear and unsentimental eye) from the vantage point of England in 2001. It was a privileged and loving life: but did it equip the author to be happy?
