Just one of many commemorations around the World to mark one hundred years since the end of The Great War. Another major piece of art, formed a focal point as the UK commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ brought home the sheer scale of human sacrifice in the battle that came to epitomize the bloodshed of the 1914-18 war – the Battle of the Somme. Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom. -

Conversations with Professor Peter Frederic Cane by Lesley Dingle1 and Daniel Bates2 10th July 2012 This is the fourth interview for the Eminent Scholars Archive with an incumbent of the Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor of Legal Science. Peter Cane is professor at the John Fleming Centre for Advancement of Legal Research at the Australian National University, Canberra. He holds the Goodhart chair jointly with his wife Professor Jane Stapleton. Interviewer: Lesley Dingle, her questions and topics are in bold type Professor Cane’s answers are in normal type. Professor Cane, normally at this juncture I would be interviewing the incumbent Goodhart Professor as a follow up to a first interview, and would concentrate on how the time during the tenure had transpired. In your case, we are faced with an interesting circumstance, because the first interview was with Professor Stapleton. So, here we are, at the end of the academic year but, instead of just a backward glance, I hope we can spend a good deal of the interview looking at your early career, as well as some reflections of your time here. You and Professor Stapleton constitute the fourth holder of the Professorship, but you are the fifth incumbent to be interviewed. So, briefly, could we look at your early career, how it developed, and then come to the Goodhart material and perhaps at the end, very broadly, some aspects of your personal research interests?
