Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube. -

Rainbow Pack – Home Learning Week 8 Thursday 14th May 2020 Make a Splash! Playing with water is a sensory, immersive, calming experience. It improves fine motor skills, provides opportunities for exploration and experimentation and can be an outlet for creativity and imaginative play. It is also a lot of fun – so this week, let’s make a splash! Washing station Set up a washing station in the garden and ask the children to clean some toys. You’ll need a few bowls of warm water – some with soap in for washing and some without for rinsing – along with sponges and brushes for scrubbing, and towels for drying. You could make this activity more specific, for example, it could be a car wash (for cleaning all the toy vehicles) or a laundry (for washing and pegging out toy clothes). This ‘Muddy Trucks & Car-Wash’ activity from http://busytoddler.com has 2 stages – first enjoy playing in the mud and then move on to playing in the water. This could be even more fun with Bubble Foam. To make this you need bubble bath or body wash and food colouring. The magic of bubble foam is a 2:1 ratio – 2 parts bubblebath to 1 part water. For the activity in the picture, use 1/2 cup bubblebath with 1/4 cupBubb of water for each colour. Add in a few drops of food colouring to make it just a little more special. With record audiences and more ways to listen than ever before, the impact of the industry should not be underestimated. While the challenges facing the sector have changed over the years, the steadfast commitment of stations to provide public value content every day remains. This new report, the first of its kind produced by the APPG, showcases the rich public value content that commercial radio provides to listeners for free. Valuing Radio explores the impact made by stations up and down the country, over and above the music and entertainment output that audiences expect. It looks particularly at radio’s role in providing news and information, the sector’s significant support for both charitable fundraising and education, in addition to work to improve diversity within the industry. Alongside this important public value content is a significant economic contribution to local economies across the UK. For the first time we have analysis on the impact of local advertising and the return on investment (ROI) that this generates for particular nations and regions of the UK. -

BOX Television response to Broadcasting Code Review: Commercial references in television programming Box TV is a joint venture between Bauer Media and Channel 4 Television and operates 7 music television channels. These are: 4Music, The Box, Kiss, Magic, Kerrang!, Smash Hits and Q. All channels are available via cable and satellite with 4Music available on the Freeview platform. Box welcomes the opportunity to respond to the consultation and whilst generally in agreement with the proposals, there are issues that Box TV feels require greater clarification and guidance from Ofcom before the proposals are implemented into the Broadcasting Code. Proposal 1: Applying the rules to placement for a non-commercial purpose 1.1 Do you agree that it is appropriate to apply product placement rules to paid-for references in programmes that are not included for a commercial purpose? If not, please explain why. 1.2 Please identify any potential impacts of Ofcom‟s proposal that you consider should be taken into account, and provide evidence, wherever possible. 1.3 Please identify any areas of this proposal which, if it is accepted, you consider Ofcom should issue guidance on. Response: Box TV agrees with the proposal as this would allow not only commercial organisations, but COI campaigns that may have a direct interest amongst Music TV viewers. Proposal 2: Clarification that product placement is permitted in single dramas 2.1 Are there any impacts we have not identified above that you think would result from our proposal to clarify that single dramas are a form of film made for television? These are: • Kiss 100 – Greater London • Kiss 101 – Severn Estuary • Kiss 105 – East of England 1.2 Bauer’s proposal is for all three stations to be able to share all programming, and therefore to remove the requirements in each Format that a specified amount of programming is made by each station in the area it serves. As a result, a new ‘national’ version of Kiss would be transmitted in each analogue licence area which would also be available on local DAB multiplexes across the UK. 1.3 This proposal is consistent with Ofcom’s policy of allowing regional analogue stations to share programming, as set out in our localness guidelines1. This policy, designed to encourage the growth of UK-wide DAB services, allows for the owners of specified local FM stations (those which provide regional coverage) to request the removal from their Formats of obligations relating to local material and locally-made programming in return for providing their service across the UK on DAB.
