Match background

FC Lokomotiv Moskva coach Anatoli Byshovets may have reason to recall a previous trip to Scotland as his side travel to face Aberdeen FC in Group B.

• He visited Scotland once as a player, scoring FC Dynamo Kyiv’s second goal as they beat Celtic FC 2-1 in in the 1967/68 European Champion Clubs’ Cup. That win, combined with a 1-1 draw in the home leg, saw Dynamo knock the then European champions out of the competition in the first round. • As a coach, Byshovets' Soviet Union side lost 3-0 to Andy Roxburgh’s Scotland at the 1992 UEFA European Championship finals in Sweden.

• Aberdeen lost 3-0 at Panathinaikos FC on Matchday 1, matching their worst-ever result in their 100th game in UEFA club competition. Lokomotiv, meanwhile, drew 3-3 against Club Atlético de Madrid in a thrilling game in Russia.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Aberdeen have never met Russian opposition before.

• Lokomotiv have never come up against Scottish opponents either.

• Lokomotiv boasted a Scottish star player for a while, with former Hibernian FC forward Garry O’Connor spending two seasons in Moscow prior to joining Birmingham City FC in the summer.

• Aberdeen have scored just twice in their last four European home games, winning one, losing one and drawing their two most recent fixtures 0-0.

• Lokomotiv are yet to lose an away game in the group stage. They played in the 2005/06 competition, drawing 0-0 at US Città di Palermo and winning 4-0 at Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC.

• FC København are at home against Panathinaikos in the day's other Group B game.

FC Lokomotiv Moskva

UEFA club competition milestones • In the UEFA Champions League, Lokomotiv's best seasons saw them reach the second group stage in 2002/03 before bowing out to AS Monaco FC in the first knockout round of the 2003/04 competition. They reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in successive seasons, losing 3-1 on aggregate to VfB Stuttgart in 1997/98 and being edged by S.S. Lazio the following season on away goals after drawing 1-1 at home and 0-0 in Rome.

UEFA Cup milestones • Competing in the UEFA Cup for the eighth time, Lokomotiv's best performances in the competition saw them lose to Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC in the third round in 2001/02 while they battled through the group stage to reach the Round of 32 in 2005/06, losing to Sevilla FC.

UEFA club competition honours • None

2006/07 season Domestic record: Finishing third in 2006, five points adrift of the top two - champions PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Spartak Moskva - Lokomotiv would have earned a place in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round. However, they qualified directly for the first round after beating FC Moskva 1-0 in the Russian Cup final in May 2007.

European record: Lokomotiv's European campaign was surprisingly short. Drawn against semi-professional Belgian side SV Zulte Waregem in the UEFA Cup first round, they won 2-1 in Russia before going down 2-0 in the return and bowing out of the competition.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to the holders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Format: If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria will be applied to determine the rankings: a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from 2007/08, at least six places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40 clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditional two-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The dates for the games are as follows: the Round of 32 takes place on 13/14 and 21 February; Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March; quarter-finals on 3 and 10 April; semi-finals on 24 April and 1 May. The 2007/08 UEFA Cup final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season.
