THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family

Plantae Tracheophyta Magnoliopsida Cactaceae

Taxon Name: Polaskia chende (Rol-.Goss.) A.C.Gibson & K.E.Horak

Synonym(s): • Cereus chende Rol-.Goss.

Taxonomic Source(s): Hunt, D., Taylor, N. and Charles, G. (compilers and editors). 2006. The New Lexicon. dh Books, Milborne Port, UK. Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1

Year Published: 2013

Date Assessed: April 29, 2009

Justification: Polaskia chende is a relatively widespread and abundant species, experiencing no known direct threats or continued decline. Hence, it is listed as Least Concern. Geographic Range

Range Description: This species is endemic to the Mexican States of Oaxaca and Puebla, where it is limited to the Tehuacán- Cuicatlán region. It grows at elevations of 1,500 to 2,000 m asl (Arias et al. 1997).

Country Occurrence: Native: Mexico (Oaxaca, Puebla)

Current Population Trend: Stable

Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) The species occurs in xerophyllous scrub and riparian vegetation. It flowers between August and January (Arias et al. 1997). Studies comparing the genetic variability between managed and wild populations of P. chende show that there are no significant differences, showing that management can be effective for the conservation of the genetic variability of the species (Blancas et al. 2006).

Systems: Terrestrial

Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information) The fruits are edible and consumed locally (Arias et al. 1997). Threats There are no major threats to the species. Many subpopulations are stable because the species is locally managed and preserved for its edible fruits, however, other subpopulations may be affected by land use change and fragmentation.

Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) The species occurs within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (Mandujano et al. 2004). Credits
