E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Scriptosaura catimbau, a new genus and species of elongate, fossorial, sand swimming eyelid-less gymnophthalmid li- zard is described on the basis of specimens obtained at Fazenda Porto Seguro, municipality of Buíque, State of Pernam- buco, in the Caatingas of northeastern Brazil. The type locality is entirely included within the area of the recently created Parque Nacional do Catimbau. The new lizard lacks external forelimbs, has rudimentary styliform hindlimbs and is fur- ther characterized by the absence of prefrontal, frontal, frontoparietal and supraocular scales, and by having one pair of chin shields. A member of the Gymnophthalmini radiation, the new genus is considered to be sister to Calyptommatus from which it differs externally by the absence of an ocular scale and absence of an enlarged temporal scale. This species most closely resembles D. novaeguineae, D. kondaoensis, D. leucurus and D. montanus, but differs from all congeneric species in exhibiting the following combination of characters: postoculars 1, scales bor- dering first infralabial 4, SVL 123 mm, 25-26 midbody scale rows, frontonasal and rostral sutures complete, and the presence of slightly posteriorly notched cycloid body scales as an adult. Somma Department of- Zoology University of Florida Gainesville, FL 32611 Amphisbaenids, or worm lizards, are a small enigmatic suborder of reptiles (containing 4 families; ca. 140 species) within the order Squamata, which include~ the more speciose lizards and snakes (Gans 1986). The name amphisbaenia is derived from the mythical Amphisbaena (Topsell 1608; Aldrovandi 1640), a two-headed beast (one head at each end), whose fantastical description may have been based, in part, upon actual observations of living worm lizards (Druce 1910). While most are limbless and worm-like in appearance, members of the family Bipedidae (containing the single genus Sipes) have two forelimbs located close to the head. This trait, and the lack of well-developed eyes, makes them look like two-legged worms. -

Most historical Angola surveys focused on the north-eastern and south-western parts of the country, with the south-east, now comprising the Kuando-Kubango Province, neglected. To address this gap a series of rapid biodiversity surveys of the upper Cubango-Okavango basin were conducted from 2012‒2015. This report presents the results of these surveys, together with a herpetological checklist of current and historical records for the Angolan drainage of the Cubango, Cuito, and Cuando Rivers. In summary 111 species are known from the region, comprising 38 snakes, 32 lizards, five chelonians, a single crocodile and 34 amphibians. The Cubango is the most western catchment and has the greatest herpetofaunal diversity (54 species). This is a reflection of both its easier access, and thus greatest number of historical records, and also the greater habitat and topographical diversity associated with the rocky headwaters. -
Phylogenetic Structure of Vertebrate Communities Across the Australian

Methods We present evidence from six lineages of terrestrial vertebrates (five lizard clades and one clade of marsupial mice) that have diversified in arid and semi-arid Australia across 37 biogeographical regions. Measures of within-line- age community phylogenetic structure and species turnover were computed to examine how patterns differ across the continent and between taxonomic groups. These results were examined in relation to climatic and historical fac- tors, which are thought to play a role in community phylogenetic structure. Analyses using a novel sliding-window approach confirm the generality of pro- cesses structuring the assemblages of the Australian arid zone at different spa- tial scales. Results Phylogenetic structure differed greatly across taxonomic groups. Although these lineages have radiated within the same biome – the Australian arid zone – they exhibit markedly different community structure at the regio- nal and local levels. Neither current climatic factors nor historical habitat sta- bility resulted in a uniform response across communities. Rather, historical and biogeographical aspects of community composition (i.e. local lineage per- sistence and diversification histories) appeared to be more important in explaining the variation in phylogenetic structure. -

Summer 2015 This past June marked the second anniversary of the launch of the PARS project. While two years may not seem like a very long time, an incredible amount of effort by our volunteers has gone into this Citizen Science project, and much has been accomplished. Since June 1, 2013 PARS members have logged over 13,000 volunteer hours and have submitted an astounding 25,000 records. The vast majority of these records have been verified by the volunteer Verification Committee. PARS is a 10-year project, and if annual record submissions continue at the same average rate, we can expect at least 125,000 records to be submitted by the end of the project. However, the rate of record submission is continually increasing as our volunteer ranks grow (currently approaching 1,200 registered volunteers). If this trend continues, our final number of records should be much higher! More importantly, volunteers are getting into the groove of focusing their search efforts using the quad/ block approach, which has greatly increased geographical coverage, and the gaps are starting to fill in. In recent months, we have also witnessed a spike in volunteers taking on County Coordinator positions, which will augment efforts in those counties, some of which greatly need increased survey efforts. -

ABSTRACT – The Australian pygopodid genus Aprasia comprises a group of small, morphologically conservative, worm-like fossorial lizards, many of which are distributed along the west coast of the continent. This study re-examines the taxonomic distinctiveness of the two most northerly occurring species in Western Australia: A. fusca and A. rostrata, which are very similar in morphology. A combined morphological and allozyme analysis revealed these two species to be conspecifi c with A. rostrata considered a senior synonym of A. fusca. As a consequence, we have redescribed A. rostrata. The allozyme analysis also revealed a new species, named here as Aprasia litorea sp. nov. This species occurs in the Lake Macleod region, well to the south of its congener, A. rostrata, and the two species are diagnosable using a conservative suite of morphological and meristic characters.
