A MESSAGE FROM SR. MAXINE: Greetings to my fellow parishioners! I’ve been told that not everyone is aware of what we are up to in the RCIA office, so I want to call it to your attention because it involves all of you! Back in August, with the pandemic raging (as it continues to do now) we decided to suspend the regular RCIA program of initiating new members into the Catholic faith because the restrictions are not conducive to the sharing and community building that are essential to the program. Instead, we saw it as a perfect opportunity to focus on and build on and renew the community we already have together. We called it Renewing Catholicism for the Intentional Adult (RCIA for the parish Community). This is a review or a renewing of our Catholic faith for the entire parish. So each week in the bulletin, this section is meant for your eyes and your enrichment. You may have noticed (or not!) the poster in the vestibule which features a “Blessing Tree” that is sprouting many blessings for you! You are invited to randomly take a blessing when you pass and see what the Spirit has in store for you. God knows that during this very unusual and often difficult time, we need His blessing! Peace to all, Sr. Maxine

RENEWING AND REVIEWING CATHOLICISM We are a People of Integrity and Truth Unbelievably it’s already Palm Sunday and we celebrate Our Lord’s entry into our lives with palm branches even as He makes His way to His own death for our sake! … Even as we are reminded of the suffering He endured for us in His Passion. In John’s Gospel for Monday of this holiest of weeks, we are told the story of Mary who took the finest of perfumed oil and anointed Jesus' feet and dried them with her hair… and she was criticized for it. But she could not NOT bless the gift that was before her. The story is reminiscent of the gospel story of the woman with the alabaster jar (Mk 14:3). I offer this beautiful reflection on that woman which might touch our own spirit as we begin to pray this Holy Week journey.

A Woman and Her Alabaster Jar

She was quite determined, this woman, with her alabaster jar. Holding hope, she knew doubt. Holding promise, she knew fear. Holding love, she knew distress. Holding joy, she knew sadness. Her life seemed laced with contradictions. With “both/and” mystery.

And she put this "both/and" mystery in her alabaster jar. How can one jar hold it all?

But she spoke to her sisters, “Gather, and entrust your “both/and” mystery to this alabaster jar.

Place in it your hopes and dreams, your promise and your expectations, your anxieties and doubts, your frustrations and your fears.”

Gather all. Fill to overflowing, To be spilled and poured out. For this is the mystery of our NOW. This is what we bring and it is all we have. The prophet cries, “Behold, I make all things new.” May the mystery of our shared life be renewed. Earthen vessels, filled to overflowing. Let us anoint Jesus with the precious mystery of our NOW. Emptied, so that we may be filled.

Blessing: May the God of TRANSITION be with you, inviting you to the new and the unknown where God waits to spring to life in you. May your willingness to be changed bring you ever nearer to the constancy of God, the one who was and is and will forever be your God. May your openness draw others to look for God in their own transitions. May the God of TRANSITIONS bless you. PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD MARCH 28, 2021

SEMINARIAN, JACOB STINNETT’S COLUMN

In the previous two weeks of our tour through St. John Paul II’s , we looked at the connection that Jesus brings between suffering and love. Suffering is transformed in love, such that the final victory will be Love. This truth gives us great hope in the midst of our suffering. Even deeper, the pope brought us to the mystery of Jesus’ suffering, which is salvific because it is offered to the Father in the perfect sacrifice needed to restore our relationship with the Father. All of these things are profound mysteries about human suffering, and Jesus opens up a new dimension to them. The Paschal Mystery of Jesus’ Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, which we remember in a particularly focused way this Holy Week, does not remove suffering in the world. Jesus gives us an even higher invitation: that is, to suffer with Him, to allow Him to enter into our sufferings with us and so continue the Gospel of Suffering today, which is the Gospel of Redemption. I hope this has brought new light to the line of St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians: “In my flesh, I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His Body, that is, the Church” (Col 1:24). This is part of the supreme vocation of every Christian, our call to holiness. It comes through our union with Christ, which includes Christ Crucified.

This week is the final installment of these series. We have reached the final chapter and conclusion of Salvifici Doloris, Chapter VII: “The Good Samaritan.” A few weeks ago, I said that suffering is an experience unique to each person, meaning that someone cannot suffer in my place. It is not like jury duty, where someone else can take my place on a jury and the trial will proceed just as normal. My suffering can only be undergone by me. Love is the same way. My love can only be given by me. My suffering and my love are two experiences that reach to the core of my personhood, and they are both related, because love opens my vulnerability. In order to be open to love, one must be open to its opposite experience: suffering. When Jesus comes to apply love to suffering, He is not putting an arbitrary and ill-fitting bandage over our wounded nature. Jesus brings the exact remedy we need.

As Christians, baptized as members of the Body of Christ, we have the same mission of bringing love where suffering is found. This is why John Paul II ends his letter on suffering with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. “At one and the same time Christ has taught man to do good by his suffering and to do good to those who suffer. In this double aspect, he has completely revealed the meaning of suffering” (SD 30). The pope looks at what interior movements are necessary for doing good to those who suffer. He writes, “Everyone who stops beside the suffering of another person, whatever form it may take, is a Good Samaritan. This stopping does not mean curiosity but availability. […] We can say that he gives himself, his very ‘I,’ opening this ‘I’ to the other person” (SD 28). This requires us to pause our own life for a moment, and to take a look at other people. We have to have sympathy for them, and we have to allow this sympathy to overflow into compassion, which comes from the Latin meaning to “suffer with.” Jesus is the first Good Samaritan. He sets us the example of compassion and love in the face of suffering.

Each act of compassion as a Good Samaritan may seem insignificant, but John Paul II reminds us of the larger landscape through which we are sojourning. “In the messianic programme of Christ, which is at the same time the programme of the Kingdom of God, suffering is present in the world to release love, in order to give birth to works of love towards neighbor, in order to transform the whole of human civilization into a ‘civilization of love.’ In this love, the salvific meaning of suffering is completely accomplished and reaches its definitive dimension” (SD 30). While we cannot grasp a full answer to the question “Why?,” John Paul II says that the answer Jesus gives is “To allow love to increase all the more.” St. Paul says the same to the Romans: “where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more” (5:20). Our own suffering is a way to attach ourselves to Christ so that love can increase all the more in our lives.

Lest we forget that human suffering is a mystery, something we can never fully understand this side of Heaven, or that an intellectual exercise like the one we have been doing together will answer every question, John Paul II offers these words, too. Behind them I can sense his own experiences with suffering. Poland was being pulled apart from the beginning of the twentieth century by Russia to the east and Germany to the West. He came of age under the Nazi occupation and dictatorship, and spent his whole priesthood and episcopacy struggling with the communist government that took over following World War II. He lost his mother when he was 8, his only brother when he was 12, and his father when he was 20. Salvifici Doloris was written not by a great theologian, although John Paul II was a great theologian. Rather Salvifici Doloris was written by someone who has lived every sentence of the letter. He can testify to the truth of suffering and love because he has lived it. This is ultimately the value of our own witness to the value of human suffering and love. “Christ does not explain in the abstract the reasons for suffering, but before all else he says: ‘Follow me!’ Come! Take part through your suffering in this work of saving the world, a salvation achieved through my suffering! Through my Cross” (SD 26). ST. PIUS X CHURCH REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO

The Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday! How should we prepare for this great Feast of Mercy?

Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when “all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened”. (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of Mercy, on the Sunday after Easter, which is now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church.

Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.”(Diary 699) He went on to say “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy.” (Diary 1109)

We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy “Divine Mercy Sunday”. We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them too and urge them to return to the practice of their faith!

The Image of The Divine Mercy, which Our Lord requested to be solemnly blessed and venerated on this day, will be on display in our church. Pope John Paul II said that the image portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said “I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish”. (Diary 341, 48) Please take the time to visit with this Image of The Divine Mercy and venerate Jesus.

Jesus said to St. Faustina “I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You”. (Diary 327) “The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the cross. …Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him.” (Diary 299)

About the feastday “Divine Mercy Sunday”, Jesus said “…tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy”. (Diary 699)

Our Lord said “When you go to confession, to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul…” and “Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy” (1602) Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is… only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest that I am making use of; open your soul in confession to Me, and I will fill it with My light.” (1725)

It is required of all Catholics to confess their serious sins at least once every year. If you haven’t yet met this obligation then take advantage of this outstanding opportunity to receive an outpouring of an ocean of graces that Jesus promises on this day. Those who have already confessed their sins should make room for others.

The Church allows for one to go to Confession for up to about 20 days, before or after Divine Mercy Sunday.

RECONCILIATION MONDAY

In a special way this Lent, the parishes of the Diocese of Columbus are celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation whereby Christ’s forgiveness is extended to repentant sinners who confess their sins to a priest. On the Monday of Holy Week, March 29, priests will be available in most of the churches of the diocese between 4pm to 7pm for the sacrament of reconciliation or confession. Some parishes will make the sacrament available for a longer time period that day. Churches where the sacrament will be available will have a special notice outside to promote the event. This special time for confession is in addition to the parish’s normal Lenten confession times.

Bishop Robert Brennan invites all, especially those who have fallen away from the practice of regular confession, to the sacrament this Lent stating, “One of the gifts that the Lord gave to His church is the sacrament of reconciliation.” Bishop Brennan continues, “I go to confession so that I can offer to God in a real way a tangible way my sorrow, but even more importantly that I can experience not in a theoretical kind of a way, but in a very personal direct way those words of forgiveness and absolution. I’m sorry. You are forgiven.”

The reason for this Lenten campaign is twofold. The first reason for Reconciliation Monday confessions throughout the diocese is to prepare for planning for the future presence of the Church and her mission to evangelize in the local community. Bishop Brennan’s stated goal for planning in the diocese is to “build belief and reliance on the Eucharist through opportunities for adoration, confession, and a return to public worship.” Encountering Jesus Christ in the sacrament of reconciliation and public repentance of the church opens the diocese to the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Second, emerging from the COVID pandemic, it is opportunity for those who have not gone to confession in sometime to return to the sacrament. Many have not yet returned from the temporary halt to public sacraments. This special time of reconciliation is an invitation for all Catholics to remember the importance of Christ’s mercy in the sacrament. “I go to confession because I sin and we’re in need of God’s mercy. Every one of us is in profound need of God’s help and mercy along the way,” says Bishop Brennan.

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR APRIL 1

Saint Hugh of Grenoble (1053-April 1, 1132) Saint Hugh of Grenoble’s Story: Today’s saint could be a patron for those of us who feel so overwhelmed by all the problems in the world that we don’t know where to begin. Hugh, who served as a bishop in France for 52 years, had his work cut out for him from the start. Corruption seemed to loom in every direction: the buying and selling of Church offices, violations of clerical celibacy, lay control of Church property, religious indifference and/or ignorance. After serving as bishop for two years, he’d had his fill. He tried disappearing to a monastery, but the pope called him back to continue the work of reform. Ironically, Hugh was reasonably effective in the role of reformer—surely because of his devotion to the Church, but also because of his strong character. In conflicts between Church and state, he was an unflinching defender of the Church. He fearlessly supported the papacy. He was eloquent as a preacher. He restored his own cathedral, made civic improvements in the town, and weathered a brief exile. Hugh may be best known as patron and benefactor of Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order. He died in 1132. He was canonized only two years later. In the midst of our confusing life these days, let us pray for the ability to rise above the fray and to see things in the light of faith as did Saint Hugh.00
