Hewitt Entertains Crowd at Villages Club The Villages Daily Sun Friday, January 9, 2015 By Steve Trivett Jack Hewitt kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for much of his stellar auto-racing career. He had them rolling in the aisles during a meeting of The Villages Motor Racing Fan Club on Wednesday evening at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. “Before I say anything, I need to warn you that I’m not rated G and I’m not politically correct,” said Hewitt, one of the most famous names in the history of United States Auto Club racing. “But I’ve stories up the ying-yang.” Yes, he does – much to the delight of the crowd of more than 100 that filled the room. And he told most of them. To say that Hewitt is a throwback is to say that belonging to the auto racing fraternity is not for the faint of heart. He’s had his neck broken twice. On at least one occasion, he’s caught on fire – that’s right, on fire. “We were running at the Fairgrounds at Indianapolis when something blew and there were flames everywhere,” he recalled. “The fire-fighting guys came over and turned all of their extinguishers on the car. “I had gotten out and I’m yelling, ‘But what about me!’ The only part of my neck that wasn’t burned was where the strap of my helmet went under my chin, and my feet were on fire. But I’m still here to tell about it.” Tell you about it he will – and he’s one of those who can talk the talk because he walked the walk. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, July 20, 2015 FOX SPORTS & TRUCKERS PLAY DIRTY IN WEDNESDAY’S NCWTS MUD SUMMER CLASSIC FOX Sports 1 Offers Live Race Coverage from NASCAR’s Only Dirt-Track Race NASCAR returns to its roots this week when the NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES slings dirt at Eldora Speedway for the third consecutive year. Tony Stewart’s dirt track in Ohio hosts NASCAR’s only national series dirt race on Wednesday, July 22, live on FOX Sports 1 at 9:00 PM ET. Beginning with practice on FOX Sports 1 at 10:30 AM ET on Wednesday, FOX Sports offers nine hours of live coverage from Eldora, the series’ 11th stop of the season, including practice, qualifying, five 10-lap qualifying races and the feature race (9:00 PM ET on FOX Sports 1). The 150-lap race is divided into three segments of 60, 50 and 40 with competition cautions at the breaks at laps 60 and 110. The inaugural Mud Summer Classic drew several Cup Series regulars and non-NASCAR dirt- track legends, and continues to attract competitors outside the Truck Series. Confirmed for Eldora are 2012 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES champion Brad Keselowski, the first past Cup Series champion to compete at Eldora; inaugural Mud Summer Classic winner Austin Dillon; NASCAR XFINITY SERIES regular Ty Dillon; and 2013 Eldora pole sitter Ken Schrader. The Dillon brothers first competed at Eldora in Dirt Late Models and have vast dirt experience, as does Schrader. Keselowski, however, hits dirt for the first time ever this week but has the experience of his Brad Keselowski Racing teammate and dirt ace, Tyler Reddick, to lean on should he need it. -

Members of the Dodge Charger Registry are also invited as it is the 50th anniversary of the Charger. The Festival Car show is Sept 23-25. The big show day is Saturday and the big cruise on Friday night. Sunday is a wind down day. So if you need to head home, no problem. Attendance each year exceeds 1000 cars . Competitors in the Ignite Midgets, Western Midgets, Western Classic Sprints, West Coast Sprints, USAC/CRA Sprints, and more were celebrated as a large crowd was in attendance. Perris Auto Speedway Announcer Chris Holt served as master of ceremonies and before the festivities began, Anne Wilkerson honored Dick Woodland with the "Billy Wilkerson Award." Western Region Director Chris Kearns addressed the crowd and celebrated Clay Daly and Steve Drake for winning their Dirt Late Model Championships at Santa Maria Speedway. Kearns also announced that the Woodland Auto Display will sponsor both the West Coast and AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Cars during the 2013 campaign. USAC/CRA Sprint Champion Mike Spencer was honored by USAC Vice President Dick Jordan for making history with his fifth consecutive title. Bud Kaeding (West Coast Sprint), Tony Hunt (Western Classic Sprint), and Ryan Bernal (Santa Maria Sprint) were also celebrated for their championships. Shannon McQueen was noted for becoming the fifth female champion driver in USAC history by claiming the Western Midget crown. David Prickett (Western Dirt Midget), Chad Nichols (Western Pavement Midget), along with Ignite Midget champions Garrett Peterson (Northern Pavement), Cory Elliott (Western Dirt), and Bryant Dawson (Las Vegas Pavement) were also recognized. -

WHEREAS, the NASCAR Winston Cup auto racing series continues to experience a tremendous growth in popularity; and WHEREAS, Darrell Waltrip was one of the primary reasons for the early growth of the sport; and WHEREAS, Darrell was born February 5, 1947 in Owensboro, Kentucky, and started his distinguished racing career by racing go-karts at age 12; and WHEREAS, just four years later, he and his father rebuilt a 1936 Chevrolet, which Darrell entered in a race at a local dirt track near Owensboro; and WHEREAS, by the late 1960s, Darrell showed signs of future greatness as a regular driver at the Fairgrounds in Nashville; and WHEREAS, he quickly became one of the nation’s top short-track drivers and made his historic first NASCAR Winston Cup start in 1972, at Alabama’s Talladega Speedway; and WHEREAS, in 1975, Darrell made the fateful decision to become a full-time NASCAR Winston Cup competitor; and WHEREAS, he recalled: “Wherever I would go, I was almost assured I was going to win one or two races a week and I made a good living doing that.
