It was so exciting. “ — Sailor Moon, Volume 3 Biography Naoko Takeuchi is best known as the creator of Sailor Moon, and her forte is in writing girls’ romance manga. Manga is the Japanese” word for Quick Facts “comic,” but in English it means “Japanese comics.” Naoko Takeuchi was born to Ikuko and Kenji Takeuchi on March 15, 1967 in the city * Born in 1967 of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. She has one sibling: a younger brother named Shingo. Takeuchi loved drawing from a very young age, * Japanese so drawing comics came naturally to her. Aponte All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Khani Begum, Advisor The cultural and political relationship between Japan and the United States is often praised for its equity, collaboration, and mutual respect. To many, the alliance between Japan and the United States serves as a testament for overcoming a violent and antagonistic past. However, the impact of the United States occupation and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is rarely discussed in light of this alliance. The economic revival, while important to Japan’s reentry into the global market, inevitably obscured continuing paternalistic interactions between Japan and the United States. Using postcolonial theory from Homi K. Bhahba, Frantz Fanon, and Hiroshi Yoshioka as a foundation, this study examines the ways Japan was colonized during and after the seven-year occupation by the United States. The following is a close assessment of two texts and their political significance at two specific points in history. Akira Kurosawa's1948 noir film Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi) shaped the identity of postwar Japan; Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun manga series navigates cultural amnesia and American exceptionalism during the 1990s after the Bubble Economy fell into recession in 1995. These texts are worthy of simultaneous assessment because of the ways they incorporate American archetypes, iconography, and themes into their work while still adhering to Japanese cultural concerns. -

August 4, 2011 Press Release Tsuneo Goda wins the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con International 2011 dwarf inc. TYO Inc. The Representative Director and main creator of dwarf inc. (Headquarters: Nerima-ku, Tokyo; TYO Group; http://www.dwarf.co.jp/), Tsuneo Goda picked up the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con International 2011 (official website: http://www.comic-con.org/; hereinafter referred to as "Comicon") held in San Diego, US, in late July. The Inkpot Award was established in 1974 by Comicon. Selecting from official Comicon guests who have made a large contribution to the world of pop culture such as manga, animation and science fiction, it is awarded to people who have left behind a particularly remarkable body of work. Japanese recipients of this award include Osamu Tezuka (1980); Rumiko Takahashi (1994); Naoko Takeuchi (1998); Hayao Miyazaki (2009); and Moto Hagio (2010). As well as Mr. Goda, Steven Spielberg also won an Inkpot Award this year. It could be said that Mr. Goda's award is an acknowledgment of his excellent past work on Domo-kun overseas as well as the originality of his character modeling and video works. Domo-kun started to gain success overseas after winning an award at an overseas festival in 2005, and its TV program has been broadcast in over 170 countries and regions to date including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and South Korea. It was selected as a Halloween mascot for the US major supermarket, "Target", in 2008, and was used as a limited period campaign character for the American Seven-Eleven in the following year. -

In her essay and introduction to a special issue of American Literary History, Stephanie Li identifies African American “twenty- first-century writers’ wide-ranging determination to claim their dead and envision a home for the living.” This observation contrasts with Kenneth Warren’s assertion that African American literature came to an end when Jim Crow ended. This course will focus on the diverse array of African American literary texts published since 2000, many of which confront what Saidiya Hartman calls the “afterlife of slavery” in their work. We will ask ourselves: what cultural, social, and political movements and events have shaped African American literary production in the new millennium? How does one define a black aesthetic? GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s. -

INF 327E - 27575 - Fall 2018 - Information & People: Comics, Graphic Novels, and Manga Online Course Sarah Britt: [email protected] Teaching Assistants: [email protected] INTRODUCTION: This is the Syllabus for the Course. To view Course Content, go to Modules. Pages and Files are hidden from the Student View as everything you need is in Modules. This online course is a survey of Comics, Graphic Novels, Manga, and other materials under the umbrella of Sequential Art. The world history of Comics and Manga will be explored, beginning with early visual narrative development, series paintings, newspaper cartoons, superheroes, development of the Graphic Novel, and the future projection of web comics and visual novels. In addition to history, students’ will also become familiar with the genres of Comics, Graphic Novels, and Manga, and the major artists and writers that have helped define the field of Sequential Art. The assignments will seek to gain understanding of the Comics/Manga creation process through traditional knowledge-testing assignments, along with art assignments. While the various formats of Sequential Art are commonly enjoyed by children and presumed to be material reserved for the young, Comics and Manga are for all ages and this class will explore the nuanced mature aspects of Sequential Art as well as content for children. No prior knowledge of comics or artistic ability is required for this course, but an outside knowledge base is enjoyable to behold. COURSE OBJECTIVES: ● Become familiar with the transition from early art and visual narrative media to modern day advances in technology and the significant manner that Sequential Art has played on culture and society.
