The Lion’s Tale

December 3, 2010 Leo Junior/Senior High School Volume LIII Issue IX Lions’ monumental season makes history

By Rachel Burtnett Editor-in-chief

On Nov. 5, the Leo Lions varsity football team made history when they ventured to Eastbrook High School and defeated the Panthers, ranked first in the state of Indiana. This Sectionals victory is only the second in Leo Jr. /Sr. High School history. In the first game of sectionals at Norwell, Leo’s all-time leading rusher senior Connor Kacsor suffered a torn ACL. Junior Mike Shawd, his replacement, broke his leg during the next play. After losing two strong players, many could assume the confidence of the team would go down despite the strong school and community support, but the injured players stood and watched from the sidelines as their team made them proud. The Lions, ranked third in state, came out strong in the first half with a touchdown; an Eastbrook fumble recovered by the Lions led to yet another PHOTO BY RACHEL BURTNETT TD. Leo Jr. /Sr. High School performed the original play, “A Rose by Any Other Name” by senior Emily Ferris, and “Steal Magnolias” by Robert Harling on Nov. 18, 19, and 20. Ferris wrote “A Rose by Any Other Name,” a one act play performed before “Steal Magnolias” on Nov. 19 and 20. The cast consisted of five men and two women, three brothers, a family friend, the brothers’ cousin, and two women with similar sounding names. In the play, the cousin, Lawrence, tries to play matchmaker for Matthew by introducing him to Emma. Matthew’s brother, Thomas, meets a girl while he’s studying at the park but misunderstands her name and then forgets his own. The whole situation causes confusion for all the characters. Seniors begin to feel final year stress

By Brooke Markham Editor-in-chief

College applications. Extracurricular activities. Work. Friends. Homework. As seniors struggle to balance everything that’s going on in their lives, stress levels are rising. The stress is interfering with the students’ social life, grades, and sleep. Many teachers are piling on the homework, and when seniors work after school, they are forced to make a decision. There is not always enough time to do homework, work, go to sports practice, hang out with friends, and sleep. The students are forced to prioritize and often times something has to be left behind. Unfortunately, numerous students put sleep last on their list of priorities, and it can impact their school day. In classes, it seems like seniors are falling asleep whenever they have a spare second, and the lack of sleep could easily impact their grades. Colleges look at the classes seniors take during their last year of high school and consider these grades. If one is too tired to stay awake during class, he should do something in the morning so that he may have more energy. If the best option is drinking coffee or another caffeinated beverage, the student should consider waking up earlier in order to get some extra energy for the day. Some students are lucky enough to be good singers or musicians. Eighth graders, Jamal Johnson and Haven Burnett, reveal their talents when they sing with their choir, The Voices of Unity (VOU). The worldwide competition took place in Shaoxing, China. On July 20, 2010 over 400 choirs arrived ready to succeed in the final stage of the competition. Under the direction of Marshall White, the choir director for Fort Wayne, the VOU went to a nation competition held in China and came out on top with a win against choirs from all over the United States. With this victory, the choir moved onto the second stage of the competition. This competition involved singing against groups from all over the world.
