But the move is also testimony to Tata's professionalism and sincerity. The passing of a crown is always a delicate affair. In 1991, when J.R.D. Tata handed his to Ratan Naval Tata, his courtiers had rebelled. It took time for RNT to subdue the satraps and prove JRD’s decision on his successor was perhaps his finest. But then JRD was always renowned for his ability to pick men. The circumstances around anointing RNT’s successor exactly two decades later were rather different. The world and the Tata’s had changed. It would take more than an arbitrary announcement from RNT to achieve a smooth succession in what is now one of the world’s largest conglomerates. So, if Cyrus P. Mistry is the first Tata head to have been crowned by a committee rather than a King, and the first from outside India Inc.’s first family, it is a testament to Tatas’ ability to move with the times. Yet, to those who know Tatas and its history, there is also no doubt that there is a continuing thread of history in Mistry’s appointment. Ties between the Mistry and Tata families have been close — and contentious — ever since 1936 when Cyrus’s grandfather Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry bought 17.5% of Tatas’ main holding company, Tata Sons. -

SLS was designed to enable automatic and subconscious reading practice for one hour/week, among more than 100 million early-reading children and adults, both in and out of school. This study revisited more than 13,000 non-readers and early-readers, randomly drawn from five states, to get a snap-shot of their reading skills at the baseline before the SLS intervention (2002), a year later (2003), and more recently (2007). The data in all three rounds were collected independently by Nielsen’s ORG-Centre for Social Research, by administering the same reading and writing measurement tools to the same individuals. -

We decided to adopt this approach because HAQ’s strength lies in working on children and governance and child protection. The focus and strength of this initiative lay in its systems approach to preventing a social evil. The key strategy was to focus on the governance system and work towards the strengthening of the existing state mechanisms, structures and institutions through training and monitoring of their functions, holding them accountable in implementation of the law on child marriage. Simultaneously, the project focused on, sensitizing, supporting and mobilizing the communities, through women’s self-help groups, religious leaders and youth groups to take action to prevent child marriages. Creating and empowering adolescent girls’ groups was yet another important thrust of the project. This approach enabled communities to not just mobilise support from the concerned officials, but also hold them accountable for their inaction. -

India has enjoyed strong economic growth in recent times, and has produced many great intellectual, scientifc and technical achievements. This progress has not been refected in the nutritional status of the population as a whole, however. Malnourishment still exists on a wide scale, afecting woman and children in particular. VIBHA Vocational, VIBHA CBR & ASHA – 2009-10 Vibha & ASHA – Annual Report 2009-10 Background of the programme: - Rajasthan Mahila Kalyan Mandal (RMKM) known for its work which it is doing for mentally retardation children since last 20 years in Ajmer district. In this region RMKM is the only organization working in the field of Mental Retardation and associated disabilities on an inclusive education pertain. When we started work in this field, people were unaware of causes of mental retardation, parents used to hide their children from society and they used to feel that these children are useless and are a burden on them and that giving birth to such children is because of their past sins. People didn't have understanding about mental retardation and they were unable to distinguish between mentally ill and mental retardation and these children were known as "Gela" meaning unsound mind. Parents and community members were unaware about the real causes of mental retardation. Pre-primary, primary, secondary, prevocational & vocational children about 15 years of age with mild & moderate retardation coming under prevocational & vocational group. In these group children are trained in prevocational skills such as time, money concept, adaptive skills and vocational trade, which will help them to, became independent. These children are mostly make paper bag, greeting cards, rakhi, candles etc. and all these are seasonal trade and the paper bag market is very limited hence, these children get very less share. Most of special schools are situated in city hence children from rural area are not able to get the facility from school & they are deprived from training and education. -

READING OUT OF THE “IDIOT BOX” KOTHARI, PANDEY, CHUDGAR Reading Out of the “Idiot Box”: Same-Language Subtitling on Television in India Brij Kothari [email protected] Same Language Subtitling (SLS) is the idea of subtitling the lyrics of song- Reuters Digital Vision Fellow based television programs (e.g., music videos), in the same language as the Stanford University audio. Situated in a literature review of subtitling, this article describes the 219 Cordura Hall ªrst-ever implementation of SLS on a TV program of ªlm songs, speciªcally for 210 Panama Street ªrst-language literacy. Chitrageet, a weekly 30-minute TV program of Gujarati Stanford, CA 94305-4115, ªlm songs, was telecast across Gujarat state in India, with the lyrics subtitled USA in Gujarati. We discuss the results of the pilot study to test the effectiveness of SLS of ªlm songs on the reading skills of out-of-school people. With limited Avinash Pandey exposure to SLS within a telecast period of 6 months, SLS was found to make [email protected] an incremental but measurable contribution to decoding skills, across the Assistant Professor group that generally saw the subtitled TV program (as compared to those who Marketing Birla Institute of did not).
