ABSTRACT A tree species replacement sequence for dry broadleaved forests (tropical hardwood hammocks) in the upper Florida Keys was inferred from species abundances in stands abandoned from agriculture or other anthropogenic acitivities at different times in the past. Stands were sampled soon after Hurricane Andrew, with live and hurricane-killed trees recorded separately; thus it was also possible to assess the immediate effect of Hurricane Andrew on stand successional status. We used weighted averaging regression to calculate successional age optima and tolerances for all species, based on the species composition of the pre-hurricane stands. Then we used weighted averaging calibration to calculate and compare inferred successional ages for stands based on (1) the species composition of the pre-hurricane stands and (2) the hurricane-killed species assemblages. Species characteristic of the earliest stages of post-agricultural stand de- velopment remains a signi®cant component of the forest for many years, but are gradually replaced by taxa not present, even as seedlings, during the ®rst few decades.

The last hurricane to be named Andrew was so ferocious that the World Meteorological Organization retired the name after the 1992 hurricane season. Andrew left a path of destruction from the Bahamas to the Gulf Coast of the US, but it is truly infamous for its impact on South Florida. One of only three hurricanes to be at Category 5 intensity upon its landfall in the US, Hurricane Andrew upended homes, businesses and lives in the Miami suburbs. (The 1935 Labor Day hurricane, which impacted the Florida Keys, and Hurricane Camille, which hit Mississippi in 1969, are the two other hurricanes to make landfall at Category 5 intensity.) Andrew changed building codes and hurricane-risk management, and was a stark and devastating reminder of Mother Nature’s power for the residents of South Florida. Hit hard 25 years ago Hurricane Andrew’s 1992 rampage caused USD 26.5bn in economic damage (1992 USD), destroying more than 25,000 homes and damaging an additional 100,000. Roughly 60% of Andrew’s economic damage, or USD 15.5bn, was borne by the insurance industry. Non-insured losses from Andrew included uninsured and underinsured residential properties, as well as damage to government property (including the Homestead Air Force Base), agriculture, beaches and marinas.

The center crossed the Florida East Coast Railway track at Craig with maximum winds estimated by the Weather Bureau at over 200 mph. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the water surged across the low-lying islands from Long Key to the south end of Key Largo reaching a maximum height of 18 feet above mean sea level. Zora Neale Hurston describes the storm in her book eir Eyes Were Watching God: “e monstropolous beast had left his bed … the sea was walking the earth with a heavy heel.” In its wake, Everglades Drainage District construction ends. e Great Depression begins one Belle Glade Experiment Station, 1928 hurricane year later, and Florida’s land boom goes bust. By 1931, the Everglades Drainage District defaults on its bonds. e U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intervenes to survey the land, and subsequently, federal government participation is required in future development of the region. By 1930, Florida has almost 1.5 million residents. A large number of residents are moving into South Florida, with almost 150,000 residents recorded in Dade County. 1928 “The Storm of 1928” pushes water out of Lake Okeechobee. Several thousand people drown in the small farming communities bordering its southern rim. Wind tides on the lake cause such deadly overflows that the state forms the Okeechobee Drainage District to prevent future destruction. Working with the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the Drainage District improves flood control through construction of floodway channels, control gates and major levees along the lake’s shores. 1930 1928 hurricane kills thousands of people Herbert Hoover Dike is authorized.
