It forces me to think back to a wonderful meeting, to the planning and dedication that went into its organization, and to the meeting itself, the conversations, the sharing which occurred. First, I remember our initial planning, in 2006, when we had wisely (!) decided to plan four working groups, and not five as would have been needed in Calgary that same year. We figured that after record numbers in the West, we would be back to our usual smaller numbers in Fredericton. Well, once again, numbers were much higher than expected. Our local organizers Dave Wagner and John Grant Mc Loughlin contributed to this by ensuring good participation from their graduate students and from others in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, helped in this by AARMS (Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Science) which funded some graduate students attendance. The growth of the organization twinned with a great participation from Quebec did the rest. As a result, the organizers had to adjust, and so did the working group leaders. We all know how hard it can be to lead a group of fifteen intellectuals, not all pragmatic, towards some common goal… Well, imagine thirty or more! The meeting was superbly run, once Dave Wagner had ensured large enough supplies of coffee for all! The social program was great, but I won’t venture going into details as this may not look scholarly enough. La température était remarquable, et c’est presque une canicule qui nous a accompagnés dans nos travaux. La rencontre de 2008 nous a permis de rencontrer deux conférenciers pléniers aux profils très différents, alors que Christine Stevens (projet NExT) et Rafael Nunez étaient nos invités. Les groupes de travail étaient tout aussi variés, sinon davantage, et les impressions glanées ici et là quant aux travaux des uns et des autres nous donnaient le goût d’être partout à la fois.

Photo-identification techniques were used to investigate temporal and spatial distributions of Carcharias taurus (Rafinesque, 1810) in relation to maturity, sex and pregnancy status at 19 sites along Australia’s eastern coastline. Of 931 individual sharks identified between 2004 and 2008, 479 were female (271 mature, 208 immature) and 452 male (288 mature, 164 immature). Mature, non-gravid females and mature males were mostly observed in the southern to central parts of this species range, along the eastern coast of Australia, in early summer to early winter. These sharks subsequently moved northward, and mating occurred in late spring to early summer in waters off the coast of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. Pregnant C. taurus aggregated at Wolf Rock in southern Queensland, at the most northerly part of their known range, from late summer to early winter. These sharks subsequently migrated south to pup in central and southern waters of their range in late winter to late spring. Immature sharks of both sexes moved less than mature sharks, showed no synchronised migration patterns, and were mostly restricted to central and southern waters. The validity of this supposition was tested for southeastern Australian stocks. In all, 54 fishwere angled and released into cages with 36 controls and monitored for 5 d. Of the angled fish, 15% died, mostly as a consequenceof gill-hooking and the associated physiological and mechanical damage. A biotelemetry experiment was then performed to determineif cutting the line on gill-hooked fish could improve their post-release fate.

Otway2 1College of Engineering and Science, Victoria University, PO Box 14428, Melbourne, Victoria 8001, Australia 2Port Stephens Fisheries Institute, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Locked Bag 1, Nelson Bay, New South Wales 2315, Australia ABSTRACT: Stereo-video photogrammetry was used to document swimming and non-swimming behaviours of various life-history stages of the grey nurse shark Carcharias taurus at 8 east Aus- tralian aggregation sites (during daylight) in the absence of scuba diving tourism and fishers. Swimming behaviours included hovering, milling, and active swimming with significantly greater milling. Rates of movement were least during milling and greatest for active swimming. Pectoral fins were held 20 to 24° below horizontal, which was consistent with holding positions reported in shark swimming studies. Significantly lower caudal fin positions during hovering probably minimised forward propulsion. Tail-beat frequency decreased significantly with increasing total length and was likely due to greater propulsion from larger caudal fins. Low activity indicated that sharks minimised energy expenditure when aggregated, which was associated with migratory and reproductive behaviours. Significantly different pectoral fin positions among sites likely resulted from differing navigational requirements. Non-swimming behaviours were infrequent. Chafing, gill puff, head snapping and palatoquadrate protrusion were generally categorised as grooming behaviour. One gill puff sequence and all but one rapid withdrawal event were cate- gorised as ‘flight’-response agonistic behaviour.

(GBSDC) The Sydney for Sydney Dive Wreck Proposal Coogee NSW March 2017 Executive Summary With therecent announcement by Defence Minister Marise Payne that the decommissioned ex-HMAS Sydney (4) will be offered as a dive wreck, there is a very strong case for Coogee to become its new home. Similar dive wrecks off Townsville, Avoca Beach and other locations around Australia have brought in millions of dollars to the economy and greatly assisted biodiversity by acting as artificial reefs for fish and marinelife. Sunk 4km off the coastline, there will be no visibility of the wreck from the beach, preserving the natural beauty and amenity of the area. Aproperly managed dive wreck has the potential for over 100 years of -useful life, and will provide recreational activity and economic benefits for generations to come. This dive wreck will be a great asset to Sydney's eastern beaches and to the one million Australians who take part in diving and snorkeling every year. Not only will it appeal to local divers, but also it’s potential as an international diving attraction, which is estimated to contribute up to $7m annually to the NSW economy. The member for Coogee, Bruce Notley Smith arranged a meeting on 16 November 2016 with the Minister for Primary Industry Niall Blair. Questions raised by the DPI as to why the department was not going to submit an expression of interest for the ex HMAS Sydney (4) were tabled.
