  • Reclaiming the Indigenous Style of Kalighat Paintings Lauren M. Slaughter
Reclaiming the Indigenous Style of Kalighat Paintings Lauren M. Slaughter This essay re-examines the nature of Kalighat painting, a painting style which emerged in India in the early nineteenth century and ended not long after the early twentieth century. Stemming from traditional Indian scroll painting, Kalighat paintings were created by patuas who migrated from Bengal villages into Calcutta and set up their “shop- studios” around the Kalighat temple (Guha-Thakurta, Making 17; Jain 9). Patuas represent a caste of traveling scroll-painters and performers; the earliest mention of this artisan caste appears in Brahma Vaivarta Purana, a thirteenth-century Sanskrit text (Chatterjee 50). As a result of W. G. Archer’s 1953 Bazaar Paintings of Calcutta: The Style of Kalighat, the general consensus of scholarly literature suggests that Kalighat painting reflects a western influence on thepatua artists. In line with the work of Tapati Guha-Thakurta and B.N. Mukherjee, however, I want to argue that there is not enough evidence to support the claim that this style was shaped by contact with western painting; instead I will argue that it was essentially indigenous in style, medium, and subject matter. Because stating that Kalighat paintings are British-derived diminishes their value and robs these works of their true substance, my aim is to substantiate their indigenous origins and, in so doing, explain how this re-interpretation provides new ways of understanding the innovative style of Kalighat patuas. The Vishnu Purana also has six major sections or amshas, although the last of these is really short. Maitreya and Parashara Once the sage Maitreya came to the sage Parashara and wanted to know about the creation of the universe. And this is what Parashara told him. In the beginning the universe was full of water. But in that water there emerged a huge egg (anda) that was round like a water-bubble. The egg became bigger and bigger and inside the egg there was Vishnu. This egg was called Brahmanda. And inside Brahmanda there were the mountains and the land, the oceans and the seas, the gods, demons and humans and the stars. On all sides, the egg was surrounded by water, fire, wind, the sky and the elements. Inside the egg, Vishnu adopted the form of Brahma and proceeded to create the universe. When the universe is to be destroyed, it is Vishnu again who adopts the form of Shiva and performs the act of destruction. Let us therefore salute the great god Vishnu. There are four yugas or eras. These are called krita (or satya), treta, dvapara and kali. Krita era consists of four thousand years, treta of three thousand, dvapara of two thousand and kali of one thousand. All the four eras thus pass in ten thousand. And when all the four eras have passed one thousand times each, that is merely one day for Brahma.

The Ramjanmabhoomi movement, as we know, gained its entire logic and momentum from the claims to the prior existence of a Hindu temple at the precise site of the 16th century mosque that was erected by Babar. Myth and legend, faith and belief acquired the armour of historicity in ways that could present a series of conjectures as undisputed facts. So, the 'certainty' of present-day Ayodhya as the historical birthplace of Lord Rama passes into the 'certainty' of the presence of an lOth/llth century Vaishnava temple commemorating the birthplace site, both these in turn building up to the 'hard fact' of the demolition of this temple in the 16th century to make way for the Babri Masjid. Such invocation of'facts' made it imperative for a camp of left/liberal/secular historians to attack these certainties, to riddle them with doubts and counter-facts. What this has involved is a righteous recuperation of the fields of history and archaeology from their political misuse.
