    ROBERTO MARIA DAINOTTO Myth and Carnival in Robert Coover's The Public Burning Certain situations in Coover's fictions seem to conspire with a sense of impending disaster, which we have visited upon us from day to day. We have had, in that sense, an unending sequence of apocalypses, long before Christianity began and up to the present... in a lot of contemporary fiction there's a sense of foreboding disaster which is part of the times, just like self reflexive fictions. (Coover 1983, 78) As allegory, the trope of the apocalypse—a postmodern version of the Aristotelian tragic catastrophe—stands at the center of Coover's choice of content, his method of treating his materials, and his view of writing. In his fictions, one observes desperate people caught in religious nightmares leading to terrible catastrophes, a middle-aged man whose life is sacrificed at the altar of an imaginary baseball game, beautiful women repeatedly killed in the Gothic intrigues of Gerald's Party, and other hints and omens of death and annihilation. And what about the Rosenbergs, whom the powers that be "determined to burn... in New York City's Times Square on the night of their fourteenth wedding anniversary, Thursday, June 18, 1953"(PB 3)?1 In The Public Burning, apocalypse becomes holocaust—quite literally, the Greek holokauston, a "sacrifice consumed by fire." For many children and young people it makes a huge difference when teachers and staff within their educational settings, have some understanding of the emotions and feelings they may suffer after a bereavement. Simon Says has put together this pack to assist you in coping with a death within your setting’s community. This might be the death of a child or young person, the death of a member of staff or the death of someone in a child/young person’s family. We hope that the pack will give you added confidence when coping with such difficult issues. Always be aware of your own feelings and emotions: you may also have been affected by events or by memories of past personal experiences. Remember that, for advice and support, Simon Says is here to help you. i Simon Says offers Bereavement Support to Children and Young People in Hampshire BACKGROUND OF SIMON SAYS Background to Simon Says Simon Stanley was a 37 year old teacher from Southampton when he died from cancer. His wife Sally found there was no bereavement support locally for their two small children. Their experience led to the establishment in 2001 of Simon Says as a registered charity. Research has shown that the Stanleys’ experience is not unique and there is a wider need to provide resources and information to children, parents and professionals who work with children and young people.

My interest in aircraft at Old Buckenham started several years ago and recently David Moth and I have been involved in creating a web-based photographic record of visiting !aircraft, “OLDBUCKSHOTS”. With December 2013 being the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the 453rd Bomb Group, I thought it appropriate to try to put together a record of all the B24 Liberators that were based at Old Buckenham during World War II. I was particularly interested in recording the individual aircraft identities including the names the crews gave their aircraft. (Details of !missions flown and aircrews are already well covered in existing publications.) My initial research was based on what I was able to glean from existing published material, and, as far as I am aware, the information I have put together in this booklet is !not available in this format anywhere else. The project became even more interesting when I had the pleasure of meeting Pat Ramm who, as a schoolboy during the war, was a frequent visitor to Old Buckenham airfield. He very kindly allowed me to copy his large collection of photographs and also shared his clear memories of the period with me. This spurred me on to undertake more thorough !research, the results of which I am now able to share with you. I am also indebted to the generous help from the members of the 453rd Memorial Association in particular to Tom Brittan for sharing his personal records and also to Tim !Ramsey, without whom this booklet would not have been possible.

The questions addressed are: In what ways are women represented in WWII era comic books? What ways are they represented in Post 9/11 comic books? How are the representations similar or different? In what ways did the outside war environment influence the depiction of women in these comic books? In what ways did the comic books influence the women in the war outside the comic pages? This research will closely examine two vital periods in the publications of comic books. The World War II era includes the genesis and development to the first war-themed comics. In addition many classic comic characters were introduced during this time period. In the post-9/11 and Operation Iraqi Freedom time period war-themed comics reemerged as the dominant format of comics.
