  • BOBBY CHARLES LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
BOBBY CHARLES LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Bobby Charles was born Robert Charles Guidry on 21st February 1938 in Abbeville, Louisiana. A native Cajun himself, he recalled that his life “changed for ever” when he re-tuned his parents’ radio set from a local Cajun station to one playing records by Fats Domino. Most successful as a songwriter, he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of swamp pop. His own vocal style was laidback and drawling. His biggest successes were songs other artists covered, such as ‘See You Later Alligator’ by Bill Haley & His Comets; ‘Walking To New Orleans’ by Fats Domino - with whom he recorded a duet of the same song in the 1990s - and ‘(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do’ by Clarence “Frogman” Henry. It allowed him to live off the song-writing royalties for the rest of his life! No albums were by him released in this period. Two other well-known compositions are ‘The Jealous Kind’, recorded by Joe Cocker, and ‘Tennessee Blues’ by Kris. Disenchanted with the music business, Bobby disappeared from the music scene in the mid-1960s but returned in 1972 with a self-titled album on the Bearsville label on which he was accompanied by Rick Danko and several other members of the Band and Dr John. Bobby later made a rare live appearance as a guest singer on stage at The Last Waltz, the 1976 farewell concert of the Band, although his contribution was cut from Martin Scorsese’s film of the event. Bobby Charles returned to the studio in later years, recording a European-only album called Clean Water in 1987.

In the first chapter, I summarize historical and contemporary theories, and show how each either 1) fails to give any definition of humor, 2) fails as a theory of humor, and/or 3) underappreciates, dismisses, or does not consider the power of humor in experience. The second chapter explains the failures of prior theories by understanding the problem in terms of Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms. These forms of culture are perspectives through which we express and understand our world, and each presents its own unique perspectives through which we can understand ourselves and the world.

  • Lester Young and the Birth of Cool (1998) Joel Dinerstein
Lester Young and the Birth of Cool (1998) joel dinerstein ....... American studies scholar Joel Dinerstein designed and teaches a course at the University of Texas at Austin on the history of being cool in America. In this essay from The Cool Mask (forthcoming) he shows how the African American concept of cool synthesizes African and Anglo-European ideas, describing African American cool as both an expressive style and a kind of public composure. For African Americans, cool resolves the conflict between com- peting needs to mask and to express the self, a paradox exacerbated by historical exigencies of life in the United States. For Dinerstein, the jazz musician Lester Young modeled a strategy of self-presentation that became the dominant emotional style of African Ameri- can jazz musicians and several generations of African American men. Miles Davis’s 1957 collection The Birth of the Cool tends to serve as a lightning rod for discussions of ‘‘cool’’ in jazz and African American culture.∞ A spate of jazz recordings, however, testify to the importance of being ‘‘cool’’—of main- taining emotional self-control—during World War II as a strategy for dealing with dashed hopes of social equality. The messages of Erskine Hawkins’s hit, ‘‘Keep Cool, Fool’’ (1941) and Count Basie’s ‘‘Stay Cool’’ (1946) and the cerebral quality of Charlie Parker’s ‘‘Cool Blues’’ (1946) testify to a new valuation of public composure and disparagement of the outward emotional display long associated with stereotypes of blacks, from Uncle Tom to the happy-go-lucky ‘‘southern
