In India there are more than 150 movies and 40 T.V shows approximately produced on the historical events and records. Many of these produced by the various makers to retell the tales of glory and valour of India’s great heroes do provide justice to the heroes to some extent. Authentic and accurate depictions for the sake of knowledge or even getting the glimpses of the history is not the outcome of these shows or movies. Various inconsistencies, differences and various inaccuracies regarding the script, scenes and execution, laymen are often misdirected towards concepts. The idea of creative liberty or artistic license used by the writers to make the best of the historical references provided may cause discrepancies or irregularities difficult to accept by the people or some intellectuals. But, to demand accuracy and authenticity from the Indian historical is, for its fans, to miss the point. The genre, after all, is that the descendant of Indian traditions of myth, folklore, ballads and popular history, which have combined to inform us more about an imagined past than an actual one.

  • A Semiotic Analysis of Dalit and Non Dalit Films
Amity Journal of Media & Communication Studies (ISSN 2231 – 1033) Copyright 2017 by ASCO 2017, Vol. 7, No. 1 Amity University Rajasthan Failure of Dalit Renaissance: A semiotic analysis of Dalit and Non Dalit films P. Viduthalai A. K. Divakar Dr. V. Natarajan Periyar University, India Abstract History of Modern India is ripe with examples of marginalization of Dalits’, which is against empowerment / Self-respect. There are various factors that contribute towards the marginalization of these people some of them include Exclusion, globalization, displacements, disasters etc. In India, films started making an appearance around 1900s. As the films drifted from its close kin “stage play”, a different set of grammar was established and the hermeneutics of films started to evolve later. The new form struck the caste system, let in the oppressed people into theater and allowed for an equal treatment without discrimination. This started to irk the influential and pushed them to enter into the film industry. After which, film s took a new form of stereotypical representation, glorification of caste and caste based differentiations, denigrations of the lower communities, portraying them as powerless etc. This study attempted to elicit the arbitrary meanings of both Dalit and Non Dalit filmmakers’ texts and establish that they significantly contradict with constitutive meaning. A Semiotics analysis of Dalit and non-Dalit films underpins this study. In many instances the work of dalits seemingly fuel the campaigns being initiated by political parties, which instigate socio-political movement against Dalit instead of counter these movements. Key words: Dalit, Caste, Dalit cinema, Glorification, Alternative Dalit Cinema.

  • Archetypal Patterns of Politics in Third Cinema
66 Ars Artium: An International Peer Reviewed-cum-Refereed Research Journal Ars Artium: An International Peer Reviewed-cum-Refereed Research Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences ISSN (Online) : 2395-2423 • ISSN (Print) : 2319-7889 Vol. 6, January 2018 Pp. 66-75 http://www.arsartium.org Archetypal Patterns of Politics in Third Cinema –Gaurav Mathur* Abstract Cinema as an art is constantly innovating and over-toppling its own pinnacle of achieved glory. In a century or so since its inception, the age of First Cinema (character and situation oriented) and Second (comparative perspective from an objective viewpoint) have become passé with the arrival of Third Cinema (a term coined by Michael Wayne in his book Political Cinema: The Dialectics of Third Cinema) a genre which has a strong literary and cultural grounding but takes one step further by bringing to the art of cinema- the range, depth and concerns of contemporary politics; a conscious political interlinkage between creator and spectator; clear portrayal of subaltern concerns and cultural specificities. Side stepping the avowed objectives of recreation and supreme creation, Third Cinema seeks to help the spectator build clear political ideologies and loyalties, an imperative in a multi perspective, deceptive, constantly fluctuating political environment. I shall undertake the study of select Third cinema specimen from Bollywood movies and attempt to align them with the prevalent thought and ideology of the day to eke out generalities, predict movements and showcase successful outcomes. Keywords: Third Cinema, Politics, Parallel cinema, Ideology, Revolt. Throughout its 100 odd year meandering and yet eventful sojourn, the Indian cinema has received ample of appendages and labels ranging from diverse to denunciatory.
