Mashallo and Mrs. Rosemary Mashallo whom valued education and hence inspired me to pursue this program. iv ABSTRACT This study aimed at examining the criteria employed in allocating School Feeding Program [SFP] and its subsequent effects in primary schools of Tanzania taking Manyoni district, Kintinku Ward as a case study. This study specifically focused on examining the criteria employed to allocate SFP, determine the effects of SFP on performance, enrollment, attendance and drop out among students and challenges affecting the program as such. The study adopted cross sectional design with a case study meant to get in depth data. Respondents such as teachers, members of school committee and students were randomly selected while Ward Education Officers were purposively selected. Data were collected using survey method where interviews were conducted to 64 pupils and 28 village officials using structured questionnaire. The analysis of data was done using SPSS where likert scale was used to analyze the criteria. The study found out that schools which had low performance, high food insecurity, far from village and low rainfall had high chance to get SFP. The study found that SFP had significant positive effects on the student performance, attendance and decline in drop out. There are a number of challenges that face the SFP such as inadequate supply of water and low community willingness to contribute food. Yet, cooperation might be more difficult to sustain under scarcity, since defecting from a cooperative equilibrium can yield safe, short-run benefits. In this study, we investigate how scarcity affects cooperation by leveraging exogenous variation in economic conditions induced by the Msimu harvest in ru- ral Tanzania. We document significant changes in food consumption between the pre- and post-harvest period, and show that lean season scarcity reduces socially efficient but per- sonally risky investments in a framed Investment Game. This can contribute to what is commonly referred to as a behavioral poverty trap.   • The Collapse of a Pastoral Economy
    his research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and 15 Göttingen Series in Tnorthern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds Social and Cultural Anthropology from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general Samwel Shanga Mhajida trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by The Collapse of a Pastoral Economy the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? The Datoga of Central and Northern Tanzania Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled from the 1830s to the 2000s through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.

However, little is documented about the experiences of households depending on mixed crop-livestock systems in semiarid areas in Central Tanzania. Using Manyoni District of Singida Region as a study area, quantitative data were collected from 90 respondents/households. Structured questionnaire was used to explore in- depth information about knowledge on weather related challenges; number of meals taken per day; role of some demographic and socio-economic factors and constraints faced. SPSS was employed for data entry and analysis. The findings showed 92.2% had knowledge about weather related challenges including changes in temperature rainfall pattern and wind; number of meals taken per household per day varied from one (1) and two (2) meals; a Chi-Square model at p ≤ 0.05 indicated that status of food in terms of the number of meals taken per household per day was determined by some demographic and socio-economic factors including age; size of the household, ownership and size of land; type and number of livestock owned as well as distance from areas of residence to the nearby urban centres.

In Tanzania farming depends almost entirely on rainfall, a situation that makes agriculture vulnerable to climate change. This study investigated the adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder farmers in Manyoni District.The specific objectives were to determine the adaptation strategies by smallholder famers and examine adaptation strategies by socio-demographic factors. The study adopted cross-sectional design. Multistage sampling technique was adopted to randomly select four wards, eight villages and 240 respondents; 30 from each village. Primary and secondary data were collected. Data were collected using questionnaire survey and FGDs. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis whereas quantitative data analysis was done using SPSS for descriptive statistics. Adaptation strategies were shifting cultivation, staggered cropping, cultivation of short time crops and cultivating drought resistant crops. The identified adaptation strategies were mainly selected by majority of those who owned land, and most of them were those who had non-formal education. The study concludes that the adaptation strategies that were mainly adopted were farm-based.

    Tanzania Livelihood Baseline Profile Bahi-Kintinku Lowland Paddy, Sorghum, Maize & December, 20151 Livestock Livelihood Zone (TLZ 21) Zone Description This lowland zone is very small, comprising 10 villages in total. It is located in the Bahi depression, also known as the Bahi wetlands. Most (i.e., 8) of the villages lie within Bahi District, Dodoma Region. The other 2 villages are in Kintinku Ward, Manyoni District, Singida Region. Both of these regions are located on the semi-arid central plateau of Tanzania. Rainfall is generally low but due to the wetlands, paddy is grown mainly using flood recession. Rice cultivation is the distinctive feature of this zone and it is grown both for consumption and for sale. Sorghum and maize are the two other staple crops grown as well as groundnuts and bambara nuts. Crops grown for sale include paddy, sesame and groundnuts. Livestock are also important in this zone, mainly for sale but also for milk. Very poor households depend on income earned from agricultural labor in order to pay for food purchases which are important for about 6 months of the year. This zone is considered food surplus during years of average to good rainfall. However, there are years of low rainfall when many households are food deficit. 2012-2013 was a year when affected households received food aid and the 2014-2015 rains were also very poor. In addition to low and erratic rainfall, farmers also face chronic crop pests and diseases, as well as livestock diseases. These challenges are reportedly worsening due to climate change which has brought more extreme climatic variation to the area.
