2016/17 Summer Season First Grade Finals Saturday 3rd December 2016 Ryde Aquatic & Leisure Centre 3.00pm – Ladies’ First Grade Final Cronulla Sharks vs UNSW Wests Killer Whales Girls U12 Half Time Exhibition Match: UTS Balmain v UNSW Wests 4.30pm – Men’s First Grade Final UNSW Wests Magpies vs Sydney University Lions Boys U12 Half Time Exhibition Match: Sydney Uni vs UNSW Wests Commentary by Mike ‘Westie’ Westdorp Follow us on twitter @waterpolonsw President’s Message On behalf on Water Polo NSW, welcome to the Grand Finals for the 2016/17 Sydney Metropolitan First Grade competitions. We are pleased to see continuing strength and commitment from our first division Clubs to the sport. It has been a big year for our athletes, in particular those who competed in Rio with many players having some down time after the Olympic Whirlwind. We were all delighted and proud of the announcement of the Aussie Sharks & Aussie Stingers teams, with 15 NSW players selected to represent Australia; an enormous achievement. Post Rio, Water Polo Australia High Performance Manager Tom Hill said, “Without a doubt we are disappointed in the outcome but in no way of the effort, dedication, commitment and conduct of our players, coaches and support staff that wore the green and gold. Their spirit and resilience in difficult circumstances as our medal hopes were dashed demonstrated how far we have come in many ways this past four years. Thank you to all of our program partners and stakeholders who have made a valuable contribution to what has been achieved during this time.” The First Grade competition this year introduced a new finals format, which saw the first placed team go straight through to the grand final, and second and third placed teams play off for the remaining spot.
